Springfield State Bank of Illinois $10
Dated February 10, 1843. PCGS gives a laundry list of problems on the holder, all of which are correct. They also deem this to be a remainder, which we believe to be incorrect. Everything about this note makes it out to be an impaired proof that has plenty of back damage from its removal from cardstock. In either event, we see this piece originally sold for over $400 in a 2010 HA sale.

There is a small edge tear at left and the note itself is absolutely uncirculated. When Tom sold his collection in 2003 this beauty realized $373.75, a figure that should prove to be quite undervalued when compared to today's final hammer price. Ex: Tom Denly Collection.

Columbia $50 State of South Carolina
December 1, 1873. Until a few years ago, notes from this 1873 issue were considered Very Rare or Extremely Rare as identified in Hugh Shull's "A Guide Book of Southern States Currency." A quantity of notes from this issue were discovered a few years ago in the South Carolina archives. This note has a punch through cross cancel and a little aging/handling on the right side. May 1, 1855. A really pretty odd denomination proof that faces up like a Gem any day of the week. PCGS does correctly note minor stains and small edge tear, both of which affect the eye appeal little or not at all. When one typically finds proofs on this bank they are totally black and white; the present example has a bold red "3" protector at bottom center below the large bovine vignette.

Danville Danville Bank $10
A wonderfully signed and fully framed example of this scarcer Dan County bank with auction appearances usually separated by years as opposed to months. There are some scattered rust stains but they are confined to the back and of little consequence to the overall integrity of the note. Fully red tint throughout with bold, artistic 'TEN' protector at bottom. When these do appear they usually look junky and with plenty of problems. We have no doubt this is one of the prettiest examples you will be able to find.
