Memphis 2014 > Memphis Session 1 - US Small Size Type +

Lot #1 - Small Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 12,500.00 - $ 17,500.00)
Fr. 1500* $1 1928* # *00004114A
The entire population of stars on this issue barely pushes past two dozen. Of those, only three examples are better. Two are uncirculated, and one is an XF 40, sold last January in the FUN sale. This note is new to the census and is extremely nice for a VF 35. The folds are faint, and the colors and paper brightness are in line with that of an AU! Every bit as nice as the recently sold XF, and in some ways, perhaps even nicer.
Grade: PMG Ch. VF 35
Lot #2 - Small Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 4,500.00 - $ 7,500.00)
Fr. 1500 $1 1928 A-A
I am shocked to see a $1 Legal Tender with centering and quality for this grade. It's also a low serial #A00004469A. Of the five others graded by PCGS or PMG there are none better or with a lower serial number.
Grade: PCGS Superb Gem New 68 PPQ
Lot #3 - Small Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 1,500.00 - $ 2,000.00)
Fr. 1500 $1 1928 A-A
Only a few Red Seal One s have been nice enough to receive this sought after grade. Nearly perfect in every way.
Grade: PCGS Superb Gem New 67 PPQ
Lot #4 - Small Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 600.00 - $ 900.00)
Fr. 1500 $1 1928 #A00001204A
A lovely Red Seal with low serial #1204.
Grade: PCGS Gem New 65 PPQ
Lot #5 - Small Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 350.00 - $ 500.00)
Fr. 1500 $1 1928 A-A
A nicely centered Red Seal Legal Tender.
Grade: Ch. CU
Lot #6 - Small Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 1,500.00 - $ 3,000.00)
Fr. 1500 $1 1928 #A00000034A
I am totally shocked by this low grade as this note has excellent color and the centering, for this issue, is just better to me.
Grade: PCGS Ch. New 63 PPQ
Lot #7 - Small Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 2,000.00 - $ 3,000.00)
Fr. 1501* $2 1928* *-A
These early $2 Stars are known for their Ruby Red overprints on snow white paper. Sharp embossing is seen through the holder.
Grade: PMG Ch. UNC 64 EPQ
Lot #8 - Small Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 1,000.00 - $ 2,000.00)
Fr. 1501 $2 1928 #A00000077A
A very cool note with a great low serial #77 and therefore one of the earliest Deuces. Great big uneven margins create the grade.
Grade: PCGS New 62 PPQ
Lot #9 - Small Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 1,500.00 - $ 3,000.00)
Fr. 1502 $2 1928-A A-A
A semi-key Legal Tender Deuce that has flawless paper surfaces, stunning ink colors and wonderful centering. A note that becomes particularly daunting to obtain in Gem grade as evidenced by recent auction results that show Gem 65 PPQ notes to be $1,200 items. This note has an extra point and everything that a collector could want for a potential Registry Set since there are no Superb Gems at PCGS and only one at PMG.
Grade: PCGS Gem New 66 PPQ
Lot #10 - Small Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 3,500.00 - $ 7,000.00)
Fr. 1504 $2 1928-C B-A Uncut Sheet
This is the first of a grouping of small size red and blue seal sheets that have popped up out of the weeds. Of the four 1928-C complete sheets that PCGS has graded this one is 'king of the mountain' looking down on the others. It is fresh, bright and totally original as it should be. Only a smaller top margin keeps this beauty from achieving the lofty Gem designation. The only recent results we can find are a raw C. AU that brought over $1,500 earlier this year and the last Ch. CU we see is a PMG 63 EPQ that realized over $3,000 in a far weaker 2011 market.
Grade: PCGS Very Ch. New 64 PPQ
Lot #11 - Small Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 3,500.00 - $ 7,000.00)
Fr. 1506 $2 1928-E D-A Uncut Sheet
An incredible complete sheet of this semi-key Legal Tender series that has fire engine red ink colors, mountainous embossing and flashy paper surfaces. It seems like it's been a few years since we have had many complete sheets hitting the market so the time is probably ripe for the ravenous collectors of this material to voice their opinions with their bidder paddles. In the past, a decent uncirculated 1928-E sheet was worthy of close to a $3,000 bid. It should be noted that this sheet has tremendous chop value since Superb Gems are four-figure notes and, by our count, at least half the sheet would fall into that category.
Grade: PCGS Very Ch. New 64
Lot #12 - Small Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 4,000.00 - $ 8,000.00)
Fr. 1507 $2 1928-F D-A Uncut Sheet
Yet another magnificent sheet for sale that takes your breath away. It rests comfortably at the top of the PCGS Population Report as the finest of the three they have graded. An utterly original sheet with huge side margins, spectacular originality and flawless paper. The only recent auction result we can find is a PCGS Ch. New 63 that realized $3,525 back in September. This sheet is two points better and bears the all-important Premium Paper Quality designation.
Grade: PCGS Gem New 65 PPQ
Lot #13 - Small Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 1,750.00 - $ 3,250.00)
Fr. 1508 $2 1928-G E-A Uncut Sheet
Lavish paper surfaces and radiant ink colors immediately jump out at you when admiring this red seal sheet. The notes on the right side have a very faint fold to the left of the Treasury seal but the notes on the left panel are essentially flawless Superb Gems. The aesthetic charm of this sheet belies its technical merit since you will be hard pressed to find one that looks any prettier.
Grade: PCGS Ch. Abt. New 55
Lot #14 - Small Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 2,500.00 - $ 5,000.00)
Fr. 1509 $2 1953 A-A Uncut Sheet
Yet another beautiful sheet from this old time collection. This one has serial #34 in the upper left corner note and it is one of the prettiest sheets we have seen. The margins are gigantic on all sides with great front to back registration and utter originality. Fiery red inks and crackling fresh paper validate the PPQ designation. No doubt that this will realize very strong money for the grade since it looks like a Gem sheet or better.
Grade: PCGS Very Ch. New 64 PPQ
Lot #15 - Small Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
Fr. 1510 $2 1953-A A-A
A fresh, well centered lot of 49 consecutive notes.
Grade: Ch. to Gem CU
Lot #16 - Small Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
Fr. 1513 $2 1963 #A00000034A
A super desirable serial #34 and a beautiful Gem.
Grade: Gem CU
Lot #17 - Small Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 2,000.00 - $ 3,000.00)
Fr. 1525 $5 1928 D-A
The scarcest block of all the 1928 $5s. Only a tiny handful have been located in uncirculated grades, with this example part of a short four note run. This block has been rare and underrated for decades.
Grade: PCGS Very Ch. New 64 PPQ
Lot #18 - Small Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 7,500.00 - $ 12,500.00)
Fr. 1526* $5 1928-A* *-A
One of the most difficult stars to locate in the $5 Legal series. Although not uncirculated, it has many of the attributes one would look for. The brightness and color is outstanding. This is the third finest star known on the issue, and was the best Tom Flynn could locate, even given his time and resources. The bidders back then knew the importance of this star, driving the final price to $6,900. Since then, a tightly trimmed PCGS 62 PPQ has sold for $11,500. Actually, I think most collectors would choose the note we offer here.
Grade: PMG Abt. UNC 50
Lot #19 - Small Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 750.00 - $ 1,500.00)
Fr. 1527* $5 1928-B* *-A
Extremely fresh, with clearly embossed features.
Grade: PCGS Ch. New 63 PPQ
Lot #20 - Small Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 1,750.00 - $ 2,500.00)
Fr. 1527* $5 1928-B* *-A Mule
An extremely rare Mule star that has long been recognized as one of the key issues to the full $5 Legal set. These surface so rarely that some collectors never get a chance to add an example to their set.
Grade: PCGS Fine 12
Lot #21 - Small Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 400.00 - $ 600.00)
Fr. 1529 $5 1928-D G-A
Great color is found on this well-centered better issue.
Grade: PCGS Gem New 66 PPQ
Lot #22 - Small Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 4,500.00 - $ 9,000.00)
Fr. 1530 $5 1928-E G-A Uncut Sheet
Just a spectacular example of this much tougher 1928-E Legal Tender sheet that is likely one of the prettiest in existence. It possesses stunning ink colors, fresh and bright paper surfaces and embossing that you could trip over. Boardwalk margins are seen on all sides and we are quite surprised that this only received a '64 PPQ' grade since it's one of the nicest this cataloger has seen over the course of decades. The other sheet that grades PCGS 64 PPQ sold in the past year for over $4,400 and we would certainly expect that much or better from this illustrious item.
Grade: PCGS Very Ch. New 64 PPQ
Lot #23 - Small Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
Fr. 1530 $5 1928-E G-A Mule
An elusive issue with micro back plate #637.
Grade: PCGS Abt. New 50 PPQ
Lot #24 - Small Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
Fr. 1531 $5 1928-F I-A Wide I
PCGS has seen only three notes finer that this fabulous example. The centering is perfect and the front to back registration could not be better, Frankly, I don t know what could be improved!
Grade: PCGS Superb Gem New 67 PPQ
Lot #25 - Small Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 750.00 - $ 1,500.00)
Fr. 1531* $5 1928-F* *-A Wide I
A wonderful example of this type star.
Grade: PCGS Gem New 65 PPQ
Lot #26 - Small Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 300.00 - $ 600.00)
Fr. 1531* $5 1928-F* *-A Wide I
A nice quality Wide I star in '63 PPQ'.
Grade: PCGS Ch. New 63 PPQ
Lot #27 - Small Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 3,000.00 - $ 6,000.00)
Fr. 1531* $5 1928-F* *-A Wide II
This is a very rare star with the Wide II back. It's very clear to me that this is an extremely specialized rarity for a sophisticated small size enthusiast. A rare opportunity indeed.
Grade: VF
Lot #28 - Small Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 3,500.00 - $ 7,000.00)
Fr. 1532 $5 1953 A-A Uncut Sheet
There are approximately two dozen complete sheets still known to exist for this later date Legal Tender issue. This is the serial #31 sheet and it is one of the prettiest we can recall ever having seen. We are not sure what happened with the grade but it sure looks like an astounding Gem sheet with huge margins all around and mountainous embossing practically busting through the plastic holder. It has been a good few years since we have seen one and we are guessing there is more than one collector out there who has been waiting for the opportunity to add this sheet to his collection.
Grade: PCGS Ch. New 63
Lot #29 - Small Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 3,000.00 - $ 4,000.00)
Fr. 1550 $100 1966 #A00000082A
Low serial numbers from the first pack such as this #A00000082A are always popular. There will come a day when all 100 notes are spoken for and the new collectors will just have to wait.
Grade: PCGS Gem New 65 PPQ
Lot #30 - Small Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
Fr. 1550 $100 1966 #A00343434A
This $100 is cool with its serial #00343434. This is as many 34s as could be on this note.
Grade: XF
Lot #31 - Small Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 700.00 - $ 1,400.00)
Fr. 1550* $100 1966* *-A
An unusual pair of stars from the 1966 Legal Tender issue and low serial #835* and #2754*. We sold a #*150 at $977 in '55'. Two piece lot.
Grade: VF & XF
Lot #32 - Small Size Type Notes > Silver Certificates - ($ 300.00 - $ 600.00)
Fr. 1600 $1 1928 #B00002900A
This beauty has serial number #B00002900A, and it's printed a bit high. Great grade and interesting number.
Grade: PCGS Gem New 66 PPQ
Lot #33 - Small Size Type Notes > Silver Certificates - ($ 300.00 - $ 600.00)
Fr. 1601 $1 1928-A I-B
This is the third rarest block from the 1928-A Silver Certificates. Great color and embossing is evident.
Grade: PMG Ch. UNC 64 EPQ
Lot #34 - Small Size Type Notes > Silver Certificates - ($ 300.00 - $ 600.00)
Fr. 1601/1600 $1 1928-A/1928 H-A Changeover Pair
A neat item on a Funny Back pair. The 1928-A is Very Ch. New 64 and the 1928 is Very Ch. New 64 PPQ. Two piece lot.
Grade: PCGS graded
Lot #35 - Small Size Type Notes > Silver Certificates - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
Fr. 1601, 1619 & 1621 $1 1928-A, 1957 & 1957-B #34
This Silver Certificate trio all have serial #00000034.
Grade: Ch. to Gem CU
Lot #36 - Small Size Type Notes > Silver Certificates - ($ 750.00 - $ 1,500.00)
Fr. 1602 $1 1928-B B-B
Super quality notes such as this example are in high demand by the registry set collectors. Neither of the major grading services has seen anything better on this block.
Grade: PCGS Superb Gem New 68 PPQ
Lot #37 - Small Size Type Notes > Silver Certificates - ($ 7,500.00 - $ 10,000.00)
Fr. 1603* $1 1928-C* *-A
This evenly circulated rarity has no faults mentioned by PCGS. This key star has always been sought after by a growing number of collectors. Although circulated, it is problem free and one of only five pieces graded by either PMG or PCGS.
Grade: PCGS Fine 15
Lot #38 - Small Size Type Notes > Silver Certificates - ($ 1,000.00 - $ 1,500.00)
Fr. 1606 $1 1934 #F00000010A
A premium note in several ways. Not only is the condition above most pieces, but the fancy #F00000010A will add that little bit extra to your set.
Grade: PCGS Superb Gem New 67 PPQ
Lot #39 - Small Size Type Notes > Silver Certificates - ($ 1,250.00 - $ 2,500.00)
Fr. 1606* $1 1934* *-A
Deep embossing is clearly seen through the holder. A better star with almost Gem centering.
Grade: PMG Ch. UNC 64 EPQ
Lot #40 - Small Size Type Notes > Silver Certificates - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
Fr. 1607* $1 1935* *-A
A slight downward shift on the face has prevented a higher grade. Still a difficult star to acquire.
Grade: PMG Ch. UNC 64
Lot #41 - Small Size Type Notes > Silver Certificates - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
Fr. 1607 $1 1935 #B00000034B Experimental
This is a scarce, low serial #34 Experimental issue. In my eyes it looked Gem before it was graded.
Grade: PCGS Ch. Abt. New 58 PPQ
Lot #42 - Small Size Type Notes > Silver Certificates - ($ 1,750.00 - $ 3,250.00)
Fr. 1607 $1 1935 A301A - A312A Uncut Sheet
This must be the world's nicest Ch. AU sheet since it is a screaming near Gem item but for a light corner bend or two that affects only the top two notes. The key to the real value of this sheet is that it has great cut up value due to the lower three-digit serial numbers possessed by each note. Nice Ch. to Gem CU examples would each be worth roughly $200 or more for the bottom ten notes. A highly desirable sheet no matter what your intentions that should be worth as much as solid Ch. CU sheet.
Grade: PCGS Ch. Abt. New 58 PPQ
Lot #43 - Small Size Type Notes > Silver Certificates - ($ 200.00 - $ 400.00)
Fr. 1608 $1 1935-A V-A
This top pop is the finest V-A block seen by PCGS and is the single piece in this grade. A common note in uncommon condition.
Grade: PCGS Superb Gem New 68 PPQ
Lot #44 - Small Size Type Notes > Silver Certificates - ($ 1,750.00 - $ 3,250.00)
Fr. 1608 $1 1935-A V-A Uncut Sheet
A really attractive Silver Certificate sheet that has wide side margins and deep embossing but which is a little too narrow at the top and bottom to have achieved the Gem grade. We haven't seen too many sheets come to auction in recent years and this one should be very well received.
Grade: PCGS Ch. New 63
Lot #45 - Small Size Type Notes > Silver Certificates - ($ 3,000.00 - $ 6,000.00)
Fr. 1609 $1 1935-A 'R' Experimental S-C
One of only two R Experimental notes that PCGS has ever seen that they felt qualified for the '68' grade. I can see no reason to disagree. The note exhibits visually perfect centering and registration and has no flaws whatsoever. A note for the finest registry set. A PCGS 67 PPQ sold for $2,350 late last year, but the final number on this beauty will no doubt set a record.
Grade: PCGS Superb Gem New 68 PPQ
Lot #46 - Small Size Type Notes > Silver Certificates - ($ 2,000.00 - $ 2,500.00)
Fr. 1610 $1 1935-A 'S' Experimental S-C
There have been a few of these beauties graded and they are always in demand. Currently 14 have been graded by both services.
Grade: PCGS Superb Gem New 67 PPQ
Lot #47 - Small Size Type Notes > Silver Certificates - ($ 2,000.00 - $ 4,000.00)
Fr. 1611 $1 1935-B C-D Uncut Sheet
Aside from the crushingly rare M-D block, the C-D block is the scarcest for this issue with the Schwartz/Lindquist tome assigning a value of $150 in Ch. CU and $200 in Gem CU. Virtually all of the middle notes are sensational Gems or better with the overall grade limited due to slightly smaller top and bottom margins. The punch through embossing is clearly visible through the holder and the boardwalk margins make you want to bid with irrational exuberance. A couple of years ago, in a lesser market, AU sheets would realize low four-figure prices when they were actually made available. The current offering should realize a princely sum.
Grade: PCGS Very Ch. New 64 PPQ
Lot #48 - Small Size Type Notes > Silver Certificates - ($ 2,000.00 - $ 4,000.00)
Fr. 1612 $1 1935-C K-D Uncut Sheet
Of the five complete sheets that PCGS has graded, only a single one graded Gem. This sheet bears the K-D block, the key to the series and one single notes re valued at $150 in Ch. CU and $225 in Gem CU in the Schwartz/Lindquist price guide. We are not sure what happened to the PPQ designation as it certainly appears to have deserved it; perhaps the PPQ machine was broken the day this was graded. The paper quality is nothing short of exceptional and worthy of a premium bid or two on its own merits. In recent years nice Gem sheets, when they have been made available, have been a solid $2,000-$3,000 item, and in this contemporary market prices seem to escalate from one sale to the next.
Grade: PCGS Very Ch. New 64
Lot #49 - Small Size Type Notes > Silver Certificates - ($ 3,500.00 - $ 7,000.00)
Fr. 1613N $1 1935-D G-G Uncut Sheet
Of the 15 that PCGS has graded, this sheet is tied with one other at this grade level, although we find it hard to believe that the other '67' sheet could be as magnificent as this one. Leviathan margins are seen all around and everything about the paper quality exudes excellence. It has been roughly five years since we last find one that sold; that was a PCGS Gem New 66 PPQ that brought over $2,500 in a miserable 2009 market. In today's 'Top Pop' enthusiastic market we are expecting multiples of that figure required to bring home this treasure.
Grade: PCGS Superb Gem New 67 PPQ
Lot #50 - Small Size Type Notes > Silver Certificates - ($ 2,000.00 - $ 4,000.00)
Fr. 1613N $1 1935-D B-G Uncut Sheet
PCGS has graded a whopping four complete sheets of this Narrow variety and this one easily stands alone as the highest graded example. Flashy and vibrant paper, blazing blue ink colors and embossing sharp enough to induce a paper cut all attest to the affixation of the PPQ designation. A wonderfully centered sheet that possesses balanced margins on all sides. We see that the '65 PPQ' sheet realized $1,380 in January 2012. This sheet grades a point better and the market grades about 10 points better.
Grade: PCGS Gem New 66 PPQ
Lot #51 - Small Size Type Notes > Silver Certificates - ($ 1,500.00 - $ 3,000.00)
Fr. 1614 $1 1935-E N-G Uncut Sheet
Yet another sublime complete sheet from tonight's offering that is a somewhat smaller top margin from the Superb Gem grade. All of the other margins are gigantic and the quality of the paper and inks is second to none.
Grade: PCGS Very Ch. New 64
Lot #52 - Small Size Type Notes > Silver Certificates - ($ 200.00 - $ 400.00)
Fr. 1614 $1 1935-E #V00000111H
There's something about having just 1s in the serial number of a Silver Certificate that makes the note highly desirable. The price progression of these low serial numbered Silver Certificates has been especially impressive over the past decade. In 2003 this note probably would have brought no more than $100 at auction, yet today we wouldn't be surprised to see it bring $400 today.
Grade: PMG Ch. UNC 63 EPQ
Lot #53 - Small Size Type Notes > Silver Certificates - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
Fr. 1615 $1 1935-F B-J
Only 360,000 notes were printed in this range, and it is thought that they were all released in the New Orleans area. No uncirculated notes have been reported.

Lot #63 - Small Size Type Notes > Silver Certificates - ($ 150.00 - $ 300.00)
Fr. 1653 $5 1934-C N-A Wide
These don t come much nicer. PCGS has seen only four better, PMG, only one.
Grade: PCGS Superb Gem New 67 PPQ
Lot #64 - Small Size Type Notes > Silver Certificates - ($ 750.00 - $ 1,500.00)
Fr. 1653 $5 1934-C Q-A Narrow Face
The narrow face design is found on just four different face plates and represents only about 2-1/2 % of the total 1934-C issue. It is a relatively new discovery and could yet prove to be quite rare.
Grade: PCGS Gem New 65 PPQ
Lot #65 - Small Size Type Notes > Silver Certificates - ($ 300.00 - $ 600.00)
Fr. 1653* $5 1934-C* *-A Wide
A slightly wider bottom margin would have fetched a Gem grade.
Grade: PCGS Very Ch. New 64 PPQ
Lot #66 - Small Size Type Notes > Silver Certificates - ($ 3,000.00 - $ 6,000.00)
Fr. 1653 $5 1934-C L-A
A much scarcer sheet than most realize, a fact that is validated by the PCGS Population Report. After over eight years they have only graded two with the other a '67 PPQ' sheet. Deep embossing is clearly visible through the plastic holder and it gives the appearance of a stunning gem but for the left margin being a little smaller than the others. The only other sheet we have seen for sale recently was the aforementioned PCGS graded sheet and it brought close to $4,000 less than a year ago.
Grade: PCGS Very Ch. New 64
Lot #67 - Small Size Type Notes > Silver Certificates - ($ 300.00 - $ 600.00)
Fr. 1654 $5 1934-D T-A Narrow
You can look a long time before finding a mate to this stellar note. The consignor had this graded a few years ago and it still remains as the single finest T-A Narrow ever seen by PCGS or PMG. Fortunately for today s collectors, he has decided to auction his small collection of high-end notes.
Grade: PCGS Superb Gem New 68 PPQ
Lot #68 - Small Size Type Notes > Silver Certificates - ($ 1,500.00 - $ 2,500.00)

Lot #69 - Small Size Type Notes > Silver Certificates - ($ 2,500.00 - $ 3,500.00)
Fr. 1654* $5 1934-D* *-A Wide II
This variety is very rare, even more so than the narrow star. PCGS has seen only 6 uncirculated examples versus the 20 narrow stars they have graded above '60'.
Grade: PCGS Very Ch. New 64 PPQ
Lot #70 - Small Size Type Notes > Silver Certificates - ($ 3,000.00 - $ 6,000.00)
Fr. 1654 $5 1934-D Q-A Uncut Sheet
One of the last sheets from this exceptional collection of uncut small size sheets and it's a real winner. Great paper quality is seen along with huge side margins and excellent color. As bright as the day it came from the BEP and refreshingly original. Earlier this year we saw a PCGS 65 PPQ sheet sell for just a little under $4,000 and we are pretty sure this won't trail too far behind.
Grade: PCGS Very Ch. New 64
Lot #71 - Small Size Type Notes > Silver Certificates - ($ 3,500.00 - $ 7,000.00)
Fr. 1655 $5 1953 A-A Uncut Sheet
Hulking margins and with paper quality that is so ineffably sublime as to grasp hold of all five senses in unison. This complete sheet certainly exudes the degree of magnificence that is normally associated with original Gem sheets. The color is there, the embossing is there and the margins are there. We are fairly confident that the bidding will be there as well.
Grade: PCGS Very Ch. New 64
Lot #72 - Small Size Type Notes > Silver Certificates - ($ 12,500.00 - $ 17,500.00)
Fr. 1657* $5 1953-B* *-A
This is the key to the $5 Silver Certificate stars. Only a few exist in uncirculated condition, making nice AUs like this a perfect option if one wants to save a few dollars. This example is fully natural and exhibits traces of embossing and a few light bends. I can t imagine this note being graded anything less than AU, but others might disagree. One look will convince you the note is well graded.

Lot #73 - Small Size Type Notes > Silver Certificates - ($ 1,500.00 - $ 2,500.00)
Fr. 1701 $10 1934 #A00000016A
A full margined note with #A00000016A, cut from the second sheet. These low numbers have dried up in the last few years.
Grade: PCGS Superb Gem New 67 PPQ
Lot #74 - Small Size Type Notes > Silver Certificates - ($ 1,750.00 - $ 3,250.00)
Fr. 1701* $10 1934* *-A
A very scarce star in this state of preservation as there are only about a half-dozen known in Gems grades at both services with none reaching the Superb Gem plateau. A fresh example with broad margins, sublime inks and a treasure trove of originality. In recent times we have even been seeing 64 PPQ notes scaling the thousand dollar mark and we would certainly expect this to be a solid four-figure note.

Lot #79 - Small Size Type Notes > Silver Certificates - ($ 6,000.00 - $ 10,000.00)
Fr. 1705* $10 1934-D* *-A
Fully uncirculated 1934-D Stars have always been rare. Bidders often error in thinking that since the 1934-C and 1934-D notes are available as well as the 34-C stars, then the same would apply to the 1934-D stars. Not true. According to Track & Price, of the 66 known stars, only 10 grade above 60, and several of those listed are actually of the narrow variety. The grade seems a bit harsh, since I ve seen 65s with margins no better than this note. Close scrutiny doesn t reveal anything other than margins to account for the grade.

A single digit serial number on the FRBN series makes for a special collection, but when you can add a #1 note, your set soars into the lead. Considering how many low numbered notes were saved across the entire series, it is amazing how few of the #1 notes surface. Only one serial #1 $20 has sold recently; that was an Atlanta note in PCGS 63 PPQ, bringing $14,100 in an auction from April, 2013. Only three other #1s have been reported on the entire 1929 FRBN series.

Boardwalk margins and super embossing awaits the new owner of this lovely $5. The St. Louis district must be rare, as PMG has graded only six notes in CU, with the best being a single '66 EPQ'. PCGS has about the same stats, having graded only three uncirculated examples. This is the best they have seen and it also has no equal. Certain to bring a strong price among the registry set buyers, it is just hard to say where the bidders will stop.

This is the single finest Cleveland star seen to date by either PMG or PCGS for the $10 1934-A series. In fact, as far as star notes are concerned, in reviewing the PCGS pop report, there is only one star graded higher across the entire 1934 through 1934-D $10 series! A worthy note to add to any registry set.

Quite available in Choice CU or even Gem CU, but when one gets to this level opportunities fall off the cliff. Not only is this the only uncirculated star graded by either PMG or PCGS for the Philadelphia district, its phenomenal condition ties it with one other Chicago star to have the honor of being the finest $20 1934-C star with the new back. Definitely worth serious consideration. It is always hard to estimate the best grade of anything, but when no other examples exist to compare with, it really comes down to just a conservative guess. Could bring multiples of the $600 catalog value for a Ch. CU note

Fr. 2058-E* $20 1934-D* Richmond E-* Narrow
The narrow back design was not recognized until a few years ago, and it looks like examples could be rather scarce, especially the stars. PCGS has graded only two stars with the narrow back in CU, and both are from Richmond. This is the finer example by several points. The PMG pop report shows no CU narrow stars having been graded at all. This could prove to be one of the rarest $20 FRN stars to be offered in years. The small size book shows a low observed star serial number for just five of the twelve districts, but in each case the narrow stars are unpriced in CU.

One of the finest $20 1934-D series notes you will ever have the chance to buy. It is as close to flawless as a note could be. It certainly looks perfect to me. Oh, it s the finest 1934-D St. Louis note PCGS has seen.

A few Gems have appeared in the pop reports of both PMG and PCGS, but only one other PCGS graded note has attained this lofty level. It must be in strong hands, since Track & Price has no record of any $20 1950 D-A block selling in a grade above '67'. What is the best worth?

Apparently a rather scarce item, as PMG has graded only one example in CU and PCGS has had just three examples pass under their lamps. Fortunately, we can offer this Superb example, one that can be equaled but not surpassed. A quick search in Track & Price yields a shocking result. Only a single non-star is in their census (an XF 40) as are just two stars with no appearances after 2005! One must ask, How rare is this common note?

PCGS has graded only three stars in CU for this district. A '63 PPQ', a '65 non-PPQ' and this amazing '66 PPQ'. Across the entire $50 1950-C series, PCGS has seen the equal of this note in only one other case, that of a single Minneapolis star. That note brought $1,410 at the 2013 FUN sale. PMG has graded a mere handful of $50 1950-C Gem stars, but none exceed the quality of this note. Worth whatever it takes to obtain.

Fr. 2152a-E $100 1934 Richmond E-A
This Richmond district is not a common note and especially not in this state of preservation. Many $100s were improperly stored as vault cash or stuck away by individuals for that proverbial rainy day, and as a consequence, finding any example as pristine as this one is a chore. Even if one could find an original pack of $100 notes, it is unlikely that more than one note would grade this nice.

In recent times, notes graded '64 PPQ' sell for around $400 or so, '65 PPQ' notes around $550 and for a '66 PPQ' like this one that is at the upper end for the grade who knows where it will land.

Light green seal. This rarity could and should be one of the sale's highlights. This is the finest graded by either PCGS or PMG. A PMG 66 brought $13,800 in September 2008. This note is better and the higher denominations are stronger than in 2008. This is likely the finest light green seal graded for the type.

Large groups of $10 Hawaii notes were generally not saved due to the higher face value involved. I ve seen one half pack in 40 years, and those notes were dispersed as Gem singles decades ago. As a consequence, nice Hawaii $10s are tough today. Get yours while they are still available.

The census shows 53 stars reported for the issue, but most notes grade below VF. This example, although in a PMG VF 20 holder, has the look of a VF 25 or VF 30. The surfaces are quite clean and natural, the margins are adequate and untrimmed and I can see no faults worth mentioning. Destined to bring more than your usual VF 20.

Lot #243 - Small Size Type Notes > Hawaii Issue - ($ 2,000.00 - $ 4,000.00)
Fr. 2304 $20 1934-A Hawaii L-A
This non-mule note is by far the scarcer variety. It is tied with one other as the finest graded by PCGS. In all grades, less than 20 non-mules have been graded by PCGS, with about the same number seen by PMG. Most collectors don t realize how difficult this note really is. Neither PMG nor PCGS has yet to see one in uncirculated. This may be the best available for years to come.

An extremely elusive type for the Hawaii $20s. Very few uncirculated examples have ever surfaced, with most of the known examples coming out of the Doovas collection in the mid-1990s. This note pedigree s to the Doovas collection, and then on to the 2005 Taylor collection. A real rarity in super condition.

A common star in the lower grades, but quite elusive in Ch. CU or better. Only 12 star examples claim to be better, but of those only 6 carry the PPQ or EPQ rating from PMG or PCGS. A slight leftward shift has cost this note a point or possibly two, since the registration is above average. A net graded PMG 64 just sold early this year for over $1,800.

Lot #254 - Small Size Type Notes > Gold Certificates - ($ 7,500.00 - $ 12,500.00)
Fr. 2404 $50 1928 A-A
Extremely fresh paper and wonderful embossing can be found on this top quality $50 Gold. PCGS has graded only one note higher. There has not been a 66 PPQ on the auction market for some time. A couple 67s were sold last year attaining levels in the $20,000 range. This example is certainly worth a premium, but expect a final result at a bit less than half of that.

Lot #255 - Small Size Type Notes > Gold Certificates - ($ 15,000.00 - $ 20,000.00)
Fr. 2407 $500 1928 A-A
An inspection of the majority of VF $500s on the market over the last year will make you think that a good wash and trim job is a requirement for the grade. This note is a very pleasant departure from the norm. All four margins are original and untrimmed. The surfaces are not only clean for the grade, but are also 100% natural. The missing PPQ is no doubt due to a tiny brown spot at the right. This minor distraction is more than made up by the overall brightness and body. As nice a VF as one could hope for and your last stop before entering the XF price ranges.

Lot #256 - Small Size Type Notes > Gold Certificates - ($ 80,000.00 - $ 120,000.00)
Fr. 2408 $1,000 1928 A-A
Small size offers no greater rarities than the $1,000 Gold Certificates until the denominations exceed this note's face value. There are only 52 examples in the Track & Price census. This note is consecutive to its mate, called '65' as well. Beyond that there are two CGA 67 notes but these may or may not suit the current grading gurus. In 2006 the consecutive note realized $75,900 at a Heritage sale. In 2007 a PCGS 64 brought $59,225 at Goldberg's. This type is listed as #76 of the top 100 notes by Q.D. Bowers and D. Sundman's Greatest American Currency. A gorgeous note that has had the PPQ designation withheld despite beautiful centering and embossing, so likely due to a small closed pinhole or blemish. Previously described by Stack's Bowers Galleries as: 'Another highly important Small Size offering which represents the highest collectible denomination from the 1928 Gold Certificate series. The catalog number represents a cornerstone in any advanced Small Size collection and even more so when presented in such an attractive grade. The prominent portrait of Cleveland is showcased at the center with open space at right where the Treasury seal would typically be found on the Federal Reserve Note issues. This particular example is quite stunning with a deeply inked impression of the design. The universal back design which is also found on the Federal Reserve Note is quite sharp with a dark green hue generating a lovely contrast to the frosty white paper. The seal and serial numbers are all nicely embossed.'

5c Fiber Paper Experimental Back Second Issue

Lot #311 - Fractional Currency - ($ 750.00 - $ 1,500.00)
5c Plain Paper Experimental Back Second Issue
Surprisingly, the plain paper variety of this second issue Experimental is much scarcer than its fiber paper counterpart. This deeply embossed and broadly margined example looks as if it could have easily achieved a Gem grade. Two half-moon cancels and purple stamped "SPECIMEN" seen as always. The only recent example we can find was a few months ago; a nice uncirculated example that sold for over $750. From the John J. Ford, Jr. Collection.

Lot #312 - Fractional Currency - ($ 1,500.00 - $ 3,000.00)
10c Fiber Paper Experimental Second Issue
An absolutely stunning example of this much scarcer fiber paper Experimental that has bright paper, superb color and crystal clear surcharges. It is the same as Fr. 1249 but for the lack of a face engraving. Perhaps half-dozen are known and this is one of the highest graded and prettiest examples you will find. In our 2013 PCDA sale, we sold one graded AU that realized $920 and this note is far superior and missing the '1' surcharge. Rare in this uncancelled state.
Grade: PCGS New 62
Lot #313 - Fractional Currency - ($ 1,500.00 - $ 3,000.00)
50c Face Proof Second Issue
A lovely and rare example of this face proof that is not the same as most other second issue Experimentals that are known. This piece is virtually identical to the notes found in the Fractional Currency Presentation Books. The depth of printing detail is phenomenal and the paper is as bright as one could hope to find. Rare also due to the fact that it is uncancelled without the usual half moon cancels and stamped 'SPECIMEN.' There are believed to be either two or three known with the last bringing over $1,500 last year in a PCGS XF 45 holder. This note is clearly superior and so should the price it realizes once the hammer falls. Ex: John J. Ford, Jr. Collection.

We don't typically like to bicker with third-party grading but this red back Fessenden certainly appears to have been graded with a conservative eye. Bright bronze, great color and seemingly bottomless embossing attest to what should be the Exceptional Paper Quality designation which the margins and centering are those of a solid Gem and then some. Do not expect this to sell for typical '64' money of around $300.

Lot #342 - Fractional Currency - ($ 30,000.00 - $ 50,000.00)
Fr. 1351 50c Third Issue
This jewel originally came from the Milt Friedberg Collection and went immediately into the Tom O'Mara Collection until 2005 where it was described by Len Glazer as: 'This stunning Fr. 1351 was from our January 1997 auction of the Milt Friedberg Collection. It was described there, 'This pristine example of this important rarity is either the finest known example or tied for it. Its brightness and flash are equal to the Gengerke piece, and the margins are clearly superior. The note exhibits its full original embossing, and it is a Gem in all respects but for a small brown spot near Justice's upraised arm which holds the scales. When the Encyclopedia was printed in 1978, only four pieces were known, with this one being the plate note. The current total is either nine or ten, with only two others close to this in grade, one of which was the Gengerke piece, Lot 161 of our January 6, 1995 auction which brought $18,700.' The 2005 census is thirteen examples. The O'Mara piece is one of four in or around the Choice grade. The ex-Boyd Stack's example, which is identical to this piece in grade but with slightly inferior centering (the right face margin is extremely narrow), auctioned in May 2004 for $21,850." Both grading services have identical statistics for Fr. 1351. Each service has two entries in its census. In both cases, those two entries were one 63 and one 64; lacking photos to match them up, we have no idea how many notes those four data represent. For sure they represent at least two notes as we sold the PMG 63 and can match it. No matter how the numbers are interpreted, this note is either top-pop or tied for it. When we sold it raw, we called it "possibly finest known", and remain convinced that it is. It realized $29,900 a number that should be eclipsed this evening.'

CC-22 $2/3 February 17, 1776
A lovely example of this ever-popular Fugio fractional Continental. Every detail of the sundial on the face and the thirteen chain links on the back is clearly visible as is the mile high embossing. A very well margined and well centered example for the grade and one which is undervalued as a Ch. New note. We have recently seen nice Ch. AU examples easily surpassing the $2,000 barrier and it should be noted that this is much scarcer in high grade than the most commonly seen $1/2 note.

Lot #362 - Continental Currency - ($ 2,000.00 - $ 4,000.00)
CC-65 $4 May 20, 1777
The May 1777 issue is the second scarcest of the eleven Continental emissions, behind only the fabled Yorktown issue of April 1778. A very well signed piece that stands on its own merits as a Ch. CU note. The Boar Charging Spear vignette is superbly detailed and the mounting remnants on the back corners are extremely light. The only recent record we can find was an Apparent New 61 that sold for $1,175 back in September and this note is its taskmaster.

CC-79 and CC-83 $5 and $30 September 26, 1778 Blue Counterfeit Detectors
While these blue counterfeit detectors will not get most excited with their grade, they are absolutely beautiful due to their behemoth sheet margins. The $5 note has earned the comment edge splits and the $30 sure looks like a gorgeous CU note to this cataloger.

Lot #364 - Continental Currency - ($ 800.00 - $ 1,200.00)
CC-88 $2 January 14, 1779
A highly desirable example from this final Continental emission. Strictly CU with three ample margins and a smaller fourth. The printing quality is quite nice and, but for a small tape repaired split on the top back margin, this would easily be a four-figure item. As it lays, it still may very well reach those lofty heights.

Lot #365 - Colonial Currency > Connecticut - ($ 450.00 - $ 850.00)
CT-173 40 Shillings June 1, 1773
A wonderfully signed and lightly circulated example of this much tougher 1773 issue. Slash cancelled as almost always with some of the boldest printing imaginable. CU notes essentially don't exist and even the AUs are rather scarce.

Lot #366 - Colonial Currency > Connecticut - ($ 800.00 - $ 1,200.00)
CT-206 9 Pence June 19, 1776 Uncancelled
A note that we rarely see in this state of preservation and, if also uncancelled as this one is, quite a condition rarity. Sensational printing quality and snow white paper surfaces add a lot to the visual appeal of this note and the PMG comment 'Good Embossing' could be the understatement of the decade. In solid Ch./Gem CU grade these have always tested the four-figure threshold much as the current example should this evening.

CT-240 1799 Hartford & New Haven Turnpike
A lovely example of this complete sheet of 1799 Hartford & New Haven Turnpike notes that is printed on the typical toned paper with full sheet impression visible from the back. As is always the case with uncut sheets, parts of the next two notes are seen at the bottom. Essentially an as made Gem sheet that is one of the nicest that we have seen in 50 years of dealing in currency. On the rare occasions when these do come up for sale they always realize a healthy four-figure price. Toning.

Lot #369 - Colonial Currency > Delaware - ($ 1,750.00 - $ 3,250.00)
DE-81 3 Pence May 1, 1777
This is the scarcer 1777 issue and it has superb centering, wondrous print quality and flawless paper. For whatever reason, the 3 Pence denomination is not seen nearly as often as the other small change denominations, particularly so in Gem grade. It has been some time since a high grade example has sold in this grade, and when they do it was around $1,400-1,500 in the weaker market of yesteryear.

Lot #370 - Colonial Currency > Delaware - ($ 450.00 - $ 650.00)
DE-87 2 Shillings 6 Pence May 1, 1777
A superbly printed and well signed example of this lower denomination that we see with far less frequency than some of the higher denomination notes. Lightly handled and with the look of a much better graded note at first glance. AU notes easily surpass the $300 mark for this series.

Lot #371 - Colonial Currency > Georgia - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
GA-63 1 Shilling 1776
Sterling issue. A couple of very large margins are seen on this lightly circulated and well embossed Georgia Colonial. In years past we used to encounter far more of these routinely at auction and on bourse floors but those days are now left for our memories. Minor mounting remnants on back.
Grade: PCGS Apparent XF 40
Lot #372 - Colonial Currency > Georgia - ($ 3,000.00 - $ 6,000.00)
GA-123 $30 May 4, 1778
Low serial #38 only adds to the appeal of this gorgeous piece of Colonial paper money. All five signatures are boldly executed, the paper is as crisp and fresh as ever, and the Boar Charging Spear seal is as fully detailed as any we have seen. The $20 denomination is by far the one most commonly seen and particularly so in higher grades. The cognoscenti have always known that eye appeal sells Colonials for the money they deserve and this note has it all. Newman lists this at $2,500 in XF which is a reasonably accurate portrayal of value.

Lot #373 - Colonial Currency > Maryland - ($ 7,500.00 - $ 15,000.00)
MD-43 $2/3 January 1, 1767
Your cataloger practically fell out of his chair when this note showed up on his desk. An absolutely mesmerizing example from this prohibitively scarcer 1767 issue for which 99% of the survivors are VG/Fine notes with splits, tears, pins, etc. This pristine example rightfully has the look of a Gem in every regard with three huge margins (including deckled right edge) and an essentially full left indent. Couden and Clapham placed their exquisitely detailed signatures in the open bottom field. The full texture of the paper is clearly visible and is quite different from the common 1774 notes; it is this crispness of the paper which accounts for the easy cracking of the paper that is so common. Whenever notes from this series are encountered with any grade they are invariably whole denominations since virtually all of the fractional denomination notes are in tatters when seen. During the Ford sale of 2006 in Atlanta a couple of these were sold that were Ch. CU with light sheet fold and they brought five-figure prices. It would not surprise us in the least bit to see a note such as this, in a Ch. CU holder, return to that price level.

Lot #374 - Colonial Currency > Maryland - ($ 800.00 - $ 1,200.00)
MD-63 $1/3 April 10, 1774
Lovely uncirculated examples of even this most common Maryland issue are scarce but particularly so for this denomination. Virtually all the high-grade notes that are known have whole denominations or the $2/3 note; of all the other fractional denomination notes they are rarely encountered in CU grade. The sharpness of printing on this piece is unrivaled and the margins are those of a near Gem. A light brown glue strip is seen at back right but does nothing to affect how this note faces up.
Grade: PCGS Apparent New 62
Lot #375 - Colonial Currency > Maryland - ($ 450.00 - $ 850.00)

Lot #376 - Colonial Currency > Maryland - ($ 600.00 - $ 1,200.00)
MD-98 $2 August 14, 1776
A sensationally high grade is found on this note with any legitimate AU being a rarity due to the fact that CU examples are virtually unheard of. Wonderfully margined for the type with exceptionally bold printing and undeniably fresh paper. The minor restorations and enhanced signatures noted by the grading service are a little overboard since the note is as pretty as just about any we have ever seen.

Lot #377 - Colonial Currency > Massachusetts - ($ 3,250.00 - $ 4,750.00)
MA-224 4 Pence October 18, 1776
A very scarce Pence denomination note for which few survivors are known, and this is the only one we can find in CU grade. Although PCGS doesn't have a Colonial Pop Report, we can extrapolate using PMGs listing. They have only graded a single 4 Pence note and they haven't graded anything resembling a CU example for any denomination across the entire issue. This is not to be confused with the 1778 Codfish issue from which there are plenty of top caliber notes that were from cut sheets. This is a wonder note that should find its way into an advanced Colonial currency collection.

Lot #378 - Colonial Currency > Massachusetts - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
MA-282 $5 May 5, 1780 Uncancelled
A light upper corner bend is all that keeps this note from a much better grade. With three huge margins, sublime paper quality and bold printing this is one of the prettiest examples we have seen. Fully signed with Peter Boyer signature on the back and far scarcer in this uncancelled state.

Continental Loan Office Bill of Exchange Second Bill $36
This is absolutely one of the prettiest examples we have seen with the bright orange inks typical of these second bills. Not to be confused with the third and fourth bills of exchange which are much more common as a general rule. Signed by Treasurer of Loans, Francis Hopkinson, who was a signer of the Declaration of independence. Commissioned in Massachusetts for $36 and dated October 20, 1778. Serial #40 is quite low to be seen on one of these really cool Colonial fiscal items.

NJ-131 3 Pounds April 10, 1759
A much scarcer issue and denomination and one that is rarely seen in this state of preservation. Very Fine is a solid grade for any note from this issue and rarely if ever are they encountered with the Premium Paper Quality designation since so many have splits, stains, tears, etc. This same note sold for over $400 back in 2007 and the Colonial currency market has continued to advance since that time.

Run of the mill XF and AU examples are now testing the thousand dollar mark these days. Some old glue mounting remnants are seen on the back upper corners which is all that keeps this from being a multi-thousand dollar note. As it is, any New Jersey Colonial autographed by John Hart, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, is a valuable commodity.

A very minor corner fold is all that keeps this lovely 3 Pound note from a much better grade. Boldly executed signatures and tons of embossing give this tri-color Colonial all the eye appeal one could want. We have recently seen troubled AUs top the $600 mark and we are certain this lovely piece will escalate beyond the hundreds threshold.

Lot #388 - Colonial Currency > New York - ($ 950.00 - $ 1,350.00)
NY-180 $5 September 2, 1775
This is easily one of the most beautiful examples we have ever seen from this Colonial issue in 50 years of dealing in currency. A single center fold accounts for the grade. The margins are huge on both sides, the signatures look like they were applied last month and the printing quality is some of the best around. This is not to be confused with the far more available March 5, 1776 issue and the higher denominations are much tougher to obtain. A condition rarity as CU examples are few and far between.

Lot #389 - Colonial Currency > New York - ($ 450.00 - $ 850.00)
NY-184 8 Shillings January 6, 1776 Water Works
The January 1776 issue is a bit scarcer than the common March issue and we don't seem to come across this 8 Shilling denomination very often. This is easily one of the prettiest examples we have ever laid eyes on as there is a single removable hinge on the back precluding the Gem grade from being assigned. Spectacular embossing, lovely signatures and razor sharp printing make this a real treat for its new owner. The last example of this denomination that we have seen sold was a PCGS VF 35 that brought over $200.

Your cataloger is flabbergasted by the quality of this colonial that is simply never seen in CU grade and is always seen with multiple tears or other such maladies. The note has extraordinary margins, flashy bright paper surfaces, wonderfully bold signatures and absolute originality. This is the true definition of 'boardwalk margins' as you could literally stroll two abreast along the bottom and right borders, both of which show the full plate impression from the sheet. We see a single speck at the back left that could be construed as a mounting remnant but that can easily be trimmed away if one chooses. The only other example that is comparable to this is #972, graded PMG 64 EPQ, which sold in the massively undervalued Midnight Ride Collection in 2009. Even that day it realized $1,380 and we certainly are living in a far healthier financial state at the present time.

PA-219b 8 Shillings April 10, 1777 Red and Black
A truly invigorating example of a raised denomination Colonial that is the only note we have seen for this colony and the only one we can recall that was raised to an unissued denomination. The 4 Pound note is the highest denomination for this series and one really needs to do some investigatory work comparing scans of 8 Shilling and 4 Pound notes to see that this is indeed a raised denomination note. This note has some of the usual problems associated with 200+ year old circulating notes and the raising of the denomination was clearly someone's nefarious attempt at making some extra money. Once this opportunity passes, it is up to the Fates if it will be back around in our lifetimes. Splits, tears, minor damage.

Lot #401 - Colonial Currency > Rhode Island - ($ 450.00 - $ 650.00)
RI-282 $1 July 2, 1780
A nice high grade example of this common Rhode Island issue. What sets this apart from most all the others is the enormous sheet margins, thereby increasing the aesthetic appeal factor by about five. A note that the grading services could basically assign any grade to depending on their interpretation of centering vs. margin size.

RI-282 - RI-289 $1, $2, $3, $4, $5, $7, $8, $20 Uncut Sheet
July 2, 1780. A beautiful Gem quality eight note Rhode Island uncut sheet. The quality is amazing.
Grade: Gem CU
Lot #403 - Colonial Currency > South Carolina - ($ 750.00 - $ 1,500.00)
SC-125 15 Pounds March 6, 1776
While this is the most common denomination from this issue these are rarely seen in this advanced grade. While there are numerous yet well-concealed tape repairs on the back, the note has far better detail and overall aesthetic qualities than what we would normally ever see from notes of this issue. Newman values this at $2,500 in VF with no higher grade given.
Grade: PCGS Apparent VF 30
Lot #404 - Colonial Currency > South Carolina - ($ 750.00 - $ 1,500.00)
SC-137 $3 December 23, 1776 Fully Signed
Quite rare as a fully signed and issued note in this advanced state of preservation and with the 'PPQ' designation credited by the grading cabal at PCGS. Uncirculated two-signature remainders are so common for this issue but to find one with four or more signatures is quite a chore. Exceptional grade and very desirable as such. Your cataloger has never seen a truly CU example and even nice AUs catapult over the four-figure threshold.
Grade: PCGS XF 40 PPQ
Lot #405 - Colonial Currency > South Carolina - ($ 800.00 - $ 1,200.00)
SC-143 $20 February 14, 1777
Only two denominations were printed for this tougher issue and this one has the 'bird escaping cage' vignette. The detail is really closer to that of AU but there are a couple of minor ink stains on the back. Superbly signed and with much better detail than what we normally encounter. Newman values this at $2,000 in XF with no better grade given.
Grade: PCGS Apparent XF 40
Lot #406 - Colonial Currency > South Carolina - ($ 3,000.00 - $ 6,000.00)
SC-149 10 Shillings April 10, 1778
This is the only Superb Gem note that we have seen from this entire 1778 South Carolina Colonial issue. We have avidly checked auction records and the only note we can find that is close is a PMG Gem 66 EPQ that realized $2,185 back in the lowly 2009 market. This note has huge margins, superior printing quality and sublime paper surfaces. There is nothing to dislike about this glorious Colonial that should realize a princely sum once the hammer falls this evening.
Grade: PCGS Superb Gem New 67 PPQ
Lot #407 - Colonial Currency > Virginia - ($ 1,350.00 - $ 1,850.00)
VA-124 $2/3 October 20, 1777
A great note in a great grade as the PMG population report will show you that CU examples from all of the 1776-1779 Virginia issues combined rarely produce any uncirculated examples, and when they do it's Ch. CU at best. Bold Woods signature and date partially hand-signed as always. Only a somewhat tight upper right margin keeps this note from a much better grade. Certainly worthy of a four-figure price this evening.
Grade: PCGS Ch. New 63
Lot #408 - Colonial Currency > Virginia - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
VA-190 $100 July 14, 1780
This is easily the nicest rice paper note we have ever had the pleasure of offering for sale. It has extraordinary printing, great signatures, and a light degree of circulation. Virtually all of these are plagued by tears, repairs, holes, etc. due to the truly fragile nature of the paper. This astounding piece is not plagued with any of those issues thereby making it premium in every regard.
Grade: XF
Lot #409 - Colonial Currency > Virginia - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
VA-206b $150 March 1, 1781
A well signed and very attractive example of this later Virginia Colonial that Newman values at $650 in XF. Edge splits at top and bottom.

Lot #410 - Confederate Items - ($ 100.00 - $ 200.00)
T-1 $1,000 1861 Montgomery
This is a print of a T-1 by Tim Prusmack, #68/250 and it's signed on the face.
Lot #411 - Confederate Notes - ($ 1,000.00 - $ 2,000.00)
T-9 $20 July 25, 1861
Incredibly bold signatures and serial number are seen on this early Confederate type note that has some of the brightest paper surfaces we can recall. Every printing detail is fully visible and, but for a small section at the right, the note is fully framed. With the recent emphasis on high quality notes leading to ever stronger prices, we fully expect this gorgeous ship note to sail into someone's collection.
Grade: PCGS Very Ch. New 64
Lot #412 - Confederate Notes - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
T-10 $10 July 25, 1861 Fully Framed
An exceptionally well margined example of this early Confederate type that is almost always seen with some type of problems. The minor stains noted by PCGS sure seem to this cataloger to be more typically soiling associated with a F/VF note that is 150 years old.
Grade: PCGS Apparent Fine 15
Lot #413 - Confederate Notes - ($ 1,250.00 - $ 2,500.00)
T-11 $5 July 25, 1861
A really nice example of a much scarcer early Confederate type that is bright and extremely well margined. PCGS notes some problems but, in all fairness, they are the same issues that plague virtually all known T-11 notes. In the past year or two we have seen a couple of really suspect VG/Fine examples with lots of problems selling for several hundred dollars each. This delightful example should be making a triumphant entrance into one lucky person's collection after this evening. Splits, tears, repairs, backing.
Grade: PCGS Apparent Fine 15

Lot #415 - Confederate Notes - ($ 2,000.00 - $ 4,000.00)
T-22 $10 September 2, 1861
A real treasure of a Confederate type note in a grade that we don't see with great frequency. A solid VF/XF note that has some of the brightest and deepest orange inks we have seen. A strong four-figure note to be certain with the eye appeal associated with a higher grade. Deeply embossed and easily worthy of the coveted Premium Paper Quality designation.

T-40 $100 August 15, 1862 Houston Reissue
Any Confederate note issued west of the Mississippi is a desirable note and ones from Texas are of particular interest since there is such a strong collector base there. Dated 'Houston March 31, 1863' below the interest-paid stamp. An exciting, problem-free example that is typically worth several hundred dollars in this state of preservation.

Lot #423 - Confederate Notes - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
T-56 $100 April 6, 1863 Fully Framed
Cross-cut cancel. Gigantic margins and stunning visual impact are both character traits of this Lucy Pickens note. PCGS notes a small repaired edge tear at top but we can't really see it. Through the holder this looks like a Gem to me. A typical '64' graded note would be worth around $400 and we see this one heading in that direction.
