An ace from Florida! This note has four pen signatures, including that of John Milton, the governor of the state. Milton was a states rights advocate who committed suicide on April 1, 1865, saying he preferred "death to reunion." This note is Criswell 19, which has a rarity of R 6.

Virginia Treasury Note $1 Richmond
This is a well worn $1 Virginia Treasury Note. The paper and inks are fairly strong The cut is into the design at the upper left. There is a small split at the right side that was taped at one time. Some tape residue is still present. These notes were created by the General Assembly of Virginia on March 31, 1862 authorizing the state to issue confederate money with denominations as low as 1.00. These are the only Civil War notes from Virginia that are available for collectors today.

The signatures are missing.

A nice $3 note, dated 18 Dec, 1816, from this bank that opened in December 1816 and failed soon after. There is a printing crease running across the top half of the note. This note is listed as a R-5 in the Wolka Ohio reference, suggesting that 11 to 25 examples are known. This bank failed due to a number of lawsuits filed against it seeking payment on the issued notes . The bank president, John Garrison, had to sell many of his personal belongings to satisfy the claims. Ex. the Early American History Mail Bid Auction, August 26, 2000, Lot # 760.

A neat check, with a great vignette, drawn on the First National Bank and Depository of the United States in Springfield, IL. This check is made out to Francis Hildebrand, who served as a clerk in the Illinois Adjutant general Office. It is signed by Isham N. Haynie, who was the first Adjutant General appointed by the Illinois Legislature. Haynie served from January 16,1865 until 1869, when he died in office. This check has two holes in it, one slightly to the right of center and one on the vignette.

The fourth check is on the Brazil Bank, Brazil, In. This check has a vignette of the bank building and a coal cart. It also has a printed 2 revenue stamp.

This lot contains four used checks. The first is dated July 24, 1876 and is for $25,000! The second is from Chicago, is dated August 31, 1898, and has a revenue stamp. The third is from the Sherman Mine in Placerville, CA and is payment for wages at $3 a day. The fourth is on the Union National Bank of Chicago, IL (charter 3278)and is dated 4/17/1882. This check has a vignette of a young woman at the left and has a printed revenue stamp. This check has marks from a punch cancel, but the paper was not pierced.

These notes have always been honored by the bank and could still be redeemed at face value as late as the 1980s.This bank is now part of the Wachovia Corporation.

Eclectic Lot of Four Miscellaneous Paper Items
This lot consists of four items. The first is a Wells Fargo & Co. money receipt for $50, dated Dec 14, 1896 in San Francisco. This payment was going to Carson, NV.. This receipt has some short tears at the top and at the center bottom. Some of these tears were once taped and show residue. the second item is a punch card to receive two quarts of oil with a purchase of 100 gallons of gas. This card has been glued to stiff backing. The third item is a raised Federal Reserve Note, enlarged and used as a mailing envelope. Ben Franklin now adorns the face of a $1000 note! the front and back of the envelope have been separated. The fourth item is a Fr. 1619*, a 1957 star silver certificate. This note grades VG and has some dirt on the back. This note adds value to this lot.

This is a six piece lot. One is a nice piece of ANA history. This note was printed by the American Bank Note Company for the association. It has Stephen Taylor's printed signature, UNC, Serial # 010729. A second note is a G.I. Joe $5, which expired June 30, 1991, XF. There are also two Grover Cleveland $1,000,000 bills. These notes have a religious message on the back, UNC. Fifth is a Habitat for Humanity "Building Bucks." Finally, there is an $8 "Reserve Intern Note" featuring Monica Lewinsky
