Lot #1055 - Large Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 11,500.00 - $ 15,000.00)
Fr. 126b $20 1862
Decades ago there was a hoard of $10 and $20 Legal Tenders of 1862. Many of those notes had been improperly handled causing splits along the top or sometimes on the bottom. Some of those notes were trimmed to fix the problems and, as they become worth more, were professionally restored. This example is an excellent representative of this type.

Grade: Ch. AU
Lot #1059 - Large Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 30,000.00 - $ 40,000.00)
Fr. 173 $100 1880
Design 27b. Large brown seal. This is the very rare Bruce-Wyman signature combination with the large brown seal and blue serial number. There are currently nine notes in the census and six have been sold since 1997. This example, equal to the finest known, was last offered by CAA in 1998 where it realized $7,700, in the good old days. A Fine 12 brought $30,417 in March 2007 and a Fine 15 realized $25,300 in the fall of 2007. None have been offered since that time. I would certainly call this VF and it's quite rare with no offerings since 2007. This rare note is nicely centered with great color and paper quality. The note has been labeled Apparent because of restoration on the back. No doubt it's there but it's not readily visible to the naked eye and I'm not sure where it's located. PCGS notes: restorations on back.
Grade: PCGS VF 30 Apparent
Lot #1060 - Large Size Type Notes > Compound Interest Treasury Notes - ($ 12,500.00 - $ 17,500.00)
Fr. 190 $10 1863
This is the earliest date shown for the $10 Compound Interest Note. The dates mattered because they paid 6% compound interest for three years and the chart was printed on the back. In six months it was worth $10.30; just imagine if it was still paying. We needed the money by this time during the Civil War. This note has excellent color and body but the bronzing on the face has been enhanced. This note realized $9,200 in October 2005. PCGS notes: bronzing redrawn.
Grade: PCGS Apparent VF 25
Lot #1061 - Large Size Type Notes > Compound Interest Treasury Notes - ($ 8,000.00 - $ 15,000.00)
Fr. 190a $10 1864
This is an example of the July 15, 1864 date. There are numerous closed splits at the top and bottom of this note but they have not been professionally restored, just by an amateur. Otherwise, this note has excellent paper quality. PCGS notes: small edge splits at top and minor restoration.
Grade: PCGS Apparent VF 20
Lot #1062 - Large Size Type Notes > Compound Interest Treasury Notes - ($ 15,000.00 - $ 25,000.00)
Fr. 190b $10 1864
This is the latest date and the most common of the three with 97 notes reported. This note has excellent paper quality but the gold gilding on the face has smeared, making the note appear dirty. The paper quality looks to be that of an XF but there are minor splits. This note was graded PCGS 40 in the Rickey sale in 2005. PMG notes: splits and minor repairs.
Grade: PMG Ch. VF 35 Net

The Kansas City Barr note is easily the hardest district to locate from this popular series. Boardwalk margins and crackerjack embossing make one wonder why there aren't a few extra points on the assigned third-party grade. The partial down ladder serial #J32100000C, with five trailing zeroes makes this a highly-coveted piece that should get fancy serial number specialists all in a froth.

Atlanta is a tougher district for this first issue $5 FRN. It displays excellent margins and the printing is deeply contrasted against the white paper surfaces. Schwartz/Lindquist values this at $500 in Ch. CU and $900 in Gem CU; the true market value likely lies somewhere in the middle.

$5 1928-A E Richmond E-A
The Richmond district is second in scarcity only to the crushingly rare Minneapolis district. This is an extremely high-grade example for this note and one which is rarely achieved. This note represents a new low observed serial number in Schwartz/Lindquist. Boldly printed and deeply embossed it meets all the requirements for the grade. The catalog value of $700 in Gem CU is most definitely too little.

Here is a very attractive note from one of the more elusive districts from which to obtain the popular 'numeral' type 1928 Feds. Richmond had one of the lowest printings of this type, and nice attractive notes from here have been very hard to come by. A gorgeous example of a scarce note in very high grade. It is rare to find these in uncirculated condition although it should be noted that this looks like a Gem through the plastic holder. Presumably there is a fold somewhere but we cannot find it.
Grade: PCGS Ch. Abt. New 58
Lot #1350 - Small Size Type Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 300.00 - $ 600.00)
$50 1969-B G Chicago G-A
A whisper of a center fold is all that keeps this FRN from a much better grade. These 1969-B fifties have always been one of your cataloger's favorite small size series over the years. A wonderful example that faces up far better than the assigned grade.
Grade: PMG Abt. UNC 55

This modern star exudes perfection at every turn and there are very few in this grade. Its close cousin, which is only four serial numbers away, brought $690 in this grade back in late 2008 when the world was beginning to unravel.

Lot #1357 - Small Size Type Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 2,000.00 - $ 4,000.00)
$100 1934-D* C Philadelphia C-*
Any 1934-D star hundred is a rare note. Our records show just three notes. The example from the Taylor Family Collection just sold a couple of months ago in a PMG VF 35 holder at $2,115 and a PMG VF 20 Net sold late in 2009 for $1,437.50. That leaves this note as the third example. It is very well margined with solid color and fresh paper. A four-figure item to be sure but to what degree we shall leave up to the bidders.
Grade: PMG VF 20
Lot #1358 - Small Size Type Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 400.00 - $ 600.00)

With a measly printing of only 128,000, this has to be one of the nicest examples out there. You will be hard-pressed to ever find a small size FRN that has better embossing than this piece. The Schwartz/Lindquist value of $350 in Ch. CU should be smashed once the hammer falls.

This group has a similar error: the left serial number on each note is the same (with the last two digits rotated downward and stuck) but the right serial number is a mismatch. In addition, the right serial numbers are consecutive on all three notes! New discoveries among mismatched serial numbers are enthusiastically received and generally realize strong bids when offered. Lot #1515 - Colonial Currency > Pennsylvania - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
PA-124 10 Shillings June 18, 1764
Most of the examples we see from this issue are the Pence denominations that survived in sheet form and were cut up to create high-grade examples. This note has been sewn along the centerfold and there is some minor mounting damage confined to the back. All Benjamin Franklin notes have been wildly popular for decades due to the great interest in Franklin himself. We can still see three bold signatures which is unusual in this grade.
Grade: PCGS Apparent Fine 12
Lot #1516 - Confederate Notes - ($ 300.00 - $ 500.00)
T-10 $10 July 25, 1861
Cr. 35, PF-13. Plate A, printed on thick bond paper. A tiny edge tear is noted at right center.
Grade: Fine
Lot #1517 - Confederate Notes - ($ 600.00 - $ 1,200.00)
T-14 $50 September 2, 1861
We don't often encounter nice uncirculated examples of this early T-14 type. This one has three broad margins with a tighter fourth. It excels in both technical merit and aesthetic beauty which is not easy since so many of these have bad ink erosion and other quality issues.
Grade: PMG Ch. UNC 63 EPQ
Lot #1518 - Confederate Notes - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
T-16 $50 September 2, 1861
A stunning example of this popular early Confederate type that is lightly circulated with a script "CSA" watermark. So many of these have tighter margins but this one is fully framed on all sides and the margins are quite large.
Grade: PCGS VF 35 PPQ
Lot #1519 - Confederate Notes - ($ 1,500.00 - $ 3,000.00)
T-17 $20 September 2, 1861
An exceptional example of this somewhat tougher early Confederate type. The note possesses superb green ink colors and it is fully framed as well. An evenly circulated note that should make its new owner very proud. With lower-end VF notes reaching the four-figure level, we presume that this beauty will march right past that threshold within the opening minutes of bidding.
Grade: PCGS VF 30 PPQ
Lot #1520 - Confederate Notes - ($ 300.00 - $ 600.00)
T-18 $20 September 2, 1861
An otherwise mundane T-18 note which has a lengthy poem printed on the back. It begins "Representing nothing on God's earth now..." and continues for 32 lines.
Grade: PMG Abt. UNC 53
Lot #1521 - Confederate Notes - ($ 300.00 - $ 600.00)
T-20 $20 September 2, 1861
Contemporary counterfeit. This is a very high-quality piece as we don't often see them like this. XF/AU is the typical grade seen for these and even at that level they sell for around $100. This fully framed and exceptionally well-printed piece should bring far more than that.
Grade: PCGS Very Ch. New 64 PPQ
Lot #1522 - Confederate Notes - ($ 1,250.00 - $ 2,500.00)
T-21 $20 September 2, 1861
PMG notes that this is Cr. 144 with yellow-green overprint. It possesses boldly executed signatures, robust ink colors and eye appeal deserving of the gods. A four-figure item to be sure in this grade and wielding such charm and grace.
Grade: PMG VF 25
Lot #1523 - Confederate Notes - ($ 300.00 - $ 600.00)
T-21 $20 September 2, 1861
Cross-cut cancel. This well-signed early Confederate note faces up quite well but has been given the apparent grade due to closed cut cancellations.
Grade: PCGS Apparent VF 25
Lot #1524 - Confederate Notes - ($ 1,000.00 - $ 2,000.00)
T-23 $10 September 2, 1861
A more elusive type that is rarely seen in grades above VF and even more rarely is fully framed as this one is. PCGS notes restored splits but they are primarily confined to the edges. An evenly circulated example that should find a comfortable new home in your collection. We just sold a PCGS Apparent VF 20 for $2,760 and it would not surprise us if the current example collected half that total.
Grade: PCGS Apparent Fine 12
Lot #1525 - Confederate Notes - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
T-29 $10 September 2, 1861
About 95% fully framed which puts it near the head of the class for this type. PCGS notes a small edge notch and some minor stains. With problem-free examples reaching into the upper hundreds we would expect a note like this, with very minor problems, to fare just a little bit worse.
Grade: PCGS Apparent VF 20
Lot #1526 - Confederate Notes - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
T-30 $10 September 2, 1861
In terms of eye appeal, this is likely one of the nicest examples you will ever encounter with General Francis Marion's "Sweet Potato Dinner" vignette. It is bright, boldly printed and fully framed. We think we can see a center fold but it is very faint. We have recently seen AUs catapult close to the $500 mark.
Grade: PCGS Abt. New 53
Lot #1527 - Confederate Notes - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
T-34 $5 September 2, 1861
An outstanding example of this Memminger note with "CSA" script watermark. A boldly signed and numbered example that is fully framed and as lovely a circulated example as you could hope to find.
Grade: PCGS VF 30
Lot #1528 - Confederate Notes - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
T-34 $5 September 2, 1861
Fully framed. Spectacular margins and plenty of original embossing give this Memminger note all the eye appeal you could ever hope for in a VF.
Grade: PMG VF 25
Lot #1529 - Confederate Notes - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
T-36 $5 September 2, 1861
While this is certainly a common type, it becomes decidedly uncommon in Ch. AU and CU grades. By definition you cannot have a nicer AU than this; it is bright, well-signed and very attractive with just a single rubbed upper corner. Worthy of a strong bid for the grade.
Grade: PMG Ch. Abt. UNC 58 EPQ
Lot #1530 - Confederate Notes - ($ 750.00 - $ 1,500.00)
T-43 $2 June 2, 1862
A fully bold "TWO" green overprint remains on this stunning Confederate Deuce. It has 3-1/2 margins clear of the frame line which puts it well ahead of most of its competitors. At FUN, we just saw a PMG VF 25 example that looks nearly identical bring close to $1,200 and we see no reason why this beauty shouldn't perform just as admirably.
Grade: PMG VF 20
Lot #1531 - Confederate Notes - ($ 300.00 - $ 600.00)
T-44 $1 June 2, 1862
A bright Confederate Ace with superb printing contrast and a single vertical fold off to the left.

Lot #1532 - Confederate Notes - ($ 250.00 - $ 500.00)

But for one area of ink erosion in the left signature, this is a very satisfying example for the type that is lightly handled with no other real problems.
Grade: PCGS Apparent Ch. Abt. New 55
Lot #1533 - Confederate Notes - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
T-45 $1 June 2, 1862
Contemporary counterfeit. A wonderfully preserved lithograph from the first series with plate #10. We have recently seen these sell for several hundred dollars in this grade.
Grade: PMG Ch. UNC 63
Lot #1534 - Confederate Notes - ($ 1,250.00 - $ 2,500.00)
T-45 $1 June 2, 1862
Bright, fresh and wonderfully signed is this more challenging T-45 note. Very few have retained as bold a "ONE" green overprint as has this wonderful note. Most of these grade F/VF with only a small percentage reaching this grade level. With decent VFs usually selling in the $400-$500 range, we expect far more out of this note.
Grade: PMG Ch. XF 45
Lot #1535 - Confederate Notes - ($ 600.00 - $ 1,200.00)
T-45 $1 June 2, 1862
A somewhat typical grade for this Confederate Ace but with very atypical aesthetic appeal. The paper is bright and fresh with exceptional printing quality. The "ONE" green overprint has retained almost all of its original inks. For a tightly margined type as this is, when they are found with full frame lines they command a very significant premium.
Grade: PCGS VF 25
Lot #1536 - Confederate Notes - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
T-45 $1 June 2, 1862
A modicum of light folds and a bold green "ONE" overprint are seen on this exceptional T-45 note.
Grade: PCGS VF 25
Lot #1537 - Confederate Notes - ($ 300.00 - $ 600.00)
T-45 $1 June 2, 1862
Although the top margins gets a little thin, we do in fact see full frame lines around the entire note. PCGS notes some small edge splits but they are of little consequence. A really nice note with solid "ONE" green overprint.
Grade: PCGS Apparent VF 20
Lot #1538 - Confederate Notes - ($ 300.00 - $ 600.00)
T-54 $2 December 2, 1862
The portrait of Judah Benjamin is seen on this very high-grade Confederate Deuce. Thick signatures and serial number remain and the paper color has a delightful pinkish hue. Very few Gem T-54 notes ever avail themselves to the collecting public.
Grade: PMG Ch. UNC 64 EPQ
Lot #1539 - Confederate Notes - ($ 600.00 - $ 1,200.00)
T-66 $50 February 17, 1864
A beautiful example of this Jefferson Davis contemporary counterfeit that is quite rare in this state of preservation and which no doubt is near the top of the condition census. Hugely margined on both sides with great centering and stellar visual impact. One could easily make the case that this note has the look of a Gem.
Grade: PMG Ch. UNC 64
Lot #1540 - Confederate Notes - ($ 750.00 - $ 1,500.00)
CT XXI-BI $20 July 25, 1861
Female riding deer bogus note. Pretty much the nicest example your cataloger has seen in his many years in the business. This is a scarcer type with the blank back that considered to be contemporary as opposed to some of the later varieties that have different back designs. Since we can't recall having seen a CU example, nice AUs are as good as it gets. In our 2012 PCDA, we sold a PCGS VF 25 PPQ for $718.75.
Grade: PMG Abt. UNC 55 EPQ
Lot #1541 - Fractional Currency - ($ 6,000.00 - $ 12,000.00)
Fractional Currency Shield
This is a lovely grey shield that has great color and minimal issues, making it one of the best shields I have seen. The frame is period and likely always been with the shield, but the frames did not come with shields. A gorgeous item for your store or office.
Lot #1542 - Fractional Currency - ($ 600.00 - $ 1,200.00)
5c Second Issue Fiber Paper Experimental Back
A spectacular example of this much scarcer fiber paper experimental back specimen. Two half-moon cancels are present as well as purple stamped "SPECIMEN" across the middle of the note. A deeply embossed piece that is far scarcer than those printed on regular bond paper.
Grade: PCGS Very Ch. New 64 PPQ
Lot #1543 - Fractional Currency - ($ 750.00 - $ 1,500.00)
25c Second Issue Experimental Purple Back
This is a really scarce item as the purple back specimens are tough to obtain but as a fiber paper experimental become decidedly rare. Two typical half moon cancels and purple stamped "SPECIMEN" are seen. Majestic ink colors and a plethora of embossing make this a real treat. Only a broad diagonal corner fold at the bottom precludes this from achieving a Gem grade. A few years ago an identical example in the Ford collection brought $800 and we expect much the same from the present example.

Lot #1548 - Fractional Currency - ($ 1,500.00 - $ 3,000.00)
Fr. 1236 5c Third Issue
Leviathan margins and cavernous embossing are seen on this red back Clark note. We do not often encounter Superb Gems of this type as a tighter margin is often the grade-limiting culprit. When this beauty sold at 2008 FUN it brought $1,380. The market has rapidly progressed since that time and it would not surprise us to have our estimate proven to be conservative.

Lot #1553 - Fractional Currency - ($ 1,500.00 - $ 3,000.00)
Fr. 1239 5c Third Issue
Tied for finest known. Four at this grade level between both services. High-grade examples with the "A" on face are much harder to come by than its Fr. 1238 cousin. Gargantuan margins and near-perfect centering make this a real treasure for type. This note brought $1,380 at auction in the past few years and we just saw a Fr. 1238 in PMG 67 EPQ sell for a four-figure price.
Grade: PCGS Superb Gem New 67 PPQ

Lot #1559 - Fractional Currency - ($ 600.00 - $ 1,200.00)
Fr. 1244 10c Second Issue Fiber Paper Experimental Top Pop
This has the face of a Fr. 1244 except that it is a much scarcer fiber paper experimental. The typical two half-moon cancels and rubber stamped "SPECIMEN" are seen as well. Incredibly well-embossed and certainly deserving of a high grade.
Grade: PCGS Gem New 65 PPQ
Lot #1560 - Fractional Currency - ($ 1,500.00 - $ 3,000.00)
Fr. 1244SP 10c Second Issue Wide Margin Pair
Top Pop pair. Easily the nicest wide margin pair that we have seen of this Second Issue denomination. The face has two full cutting guidelines and the back displays picture-perfect centering. This pair realized $1,955 in the 2007 Central States sale and it would not surprise us to see such a realization here tonight. Graded PMG Gem UNC 66 EPQ and Superb Gem UNC 67 EPQ.

Lot #1562 - Fractional Currency - ($ 1,250.00 - $ 2,500.00)
Fr. 1251 10c Third Issue
A superlative example of this red back type that is rarely seen in this state of preservation. A single '68' has been graded by PCGS with this and one other note at this grade level. Oversized margins, fiery ink colors and seemingly bottomless embossing add to the aesthetic beauty of this note. Green Sheet is $860 at this grade level and that is laughable.
Grade: PCGS Superb Gem New 67 PPQ
Lot #1563 - Fractional Currency - ($ 350.00 - $ 650.00)
Fr. 1253 10c Third Issue

Lot #1564 - Fractional Currency - ($ 1,500.00 - $ 3,000.00)
Fr. 1254 10 c Third Issue
In years past Gem appearances of this hand-signed variety used to be few and far between but now with somewhat more lax third-party graded examples they show up about once a year. The margins on this note are plentiful with bold signatures and rich ink colors. A brightly bronzed note with embossing as deep as Chicago-style pizza. A real treasure for the Fractional collector who appreciates both quality and rarity. In our 2012 Memphis sale, we sold a PMG 65 EPQ example for $862.50 and this note is even better.
Grade: PMG Gem UNC 66 EPQ
Lot #1565 - Fractional Currency - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
Fr. 1255SP 10c Third Issue Top Pop
A stunning example of this wide margin back third issue specimen. It has bright paper, exceptional bronzing and dead-on centering. We have seen lesser-graded examples sell for several hundred dollars and we would expect much the same here tonight.
Grade: PCGS Gem New 66 PPQ
Lot #1566 - Fractional Currency - ($ 1,250.00 - $ 2,500.00)
Fr. 1261 10c Fourth Issue
Tied for finest known. Of the 245 examples that PCGS has graded of this variety only one other is its equal with none better. An incredibly well-margined example of this scarcer variety with blue right end and smaller Treasury seal. These are rarely seen in this grade as they don't typically come with the margins and centering of their Fr. 1257/1258 cousins. Green Sheet asking price in this grade is $950.
Grade: PCGS Superb Gem New 67 PPQ
Lot #1567 - Fractional Currency - ($ 250.00 - $ 500.00)

Lot #1574 - Fractional Currency - ($ 600.00 - $ 1,200.00)
Fr. 1282SP 25c Third Issue Wide Margin Back
Top Pop. Of the 30 examples that PCGS has graded of this number this is numero uno. A fully wide example with two and a half cutting guidelines and essentially perfect centering. The Green Sheet asking price of $640 in this grade is likely not asking enough.
Grade: PCGS Superb Gem New 67 PPQ
Lot #1575 - Fractional Currency - ($ 750.00 - $ 1,500.00)
Fr. 1284 25c Second Issue Experimental Face
Type of Fr. 1284 with bronze '25' denomination counter and '18-63' surcharges on back. Typical half moon cancels and stamped "SPECIMEN" as usual. A spectacular example of this experimental type that will fill a gaping hole in many advanced collections. When this sold as part of the fabled Chapman Brothers holdings, it brought $600, a mark that could easily be eclipsed today.
Grade: PCGS Gem New 65 PPQ
Lot #1576 - Fractional Currency - ($ 1,000.00 - $ 2,000.00)
Fr. 1286 25c Second Issue Top Pop
This is a great note no matter how you slice it. Hulking margins and perfect centering are complemented by bright bronze and crystal clear surcharges. PCGS has graded 49 examples and this note is easily the nicest. For those of you who appreciate chasing Top Pop caliber notes or who just appreciate beautiful pieces of Fractional currency then you shouldn't let this opportunity pass you by.
Grade: PCGS Gem New 66 PPQ
Lot #1577 - Fractional Currency - ($ 750.00 - $ 1,500.00)
Fr. 1286 25c Second Issue Experimental Back
Type like Fr. 1286 with '25' bronze currency denomination on back and 'S' and '18-63 surcharges. An absolutely superb example that wields healthy paper surfaces, easily discernible embossing and bold printing quality that is only found in notes from old-time collections. Very similar to the adjoining lot but even a little scarcer.
Grade: PMG Gem UNC 65 EPQ
Lot #1578 - Fractional Currency - ($ 175.00 - $ 325.00)

Grade: PCGS XF 40
Lot #1579 - Fractional Currency - ($ 2,500.00 - $ 5,000.00)
Fr. 1290 25c Second Issue
This fiber paper note is Top Pop at both grading services. True Gem second issue fiber paper notes are very difficult to obtain and the margins and centering on this one are superb. Majestic purple inks and razor sharp surcharges grace the back. The Green Sheet asking price is $1,800 in this grade but when will you be able to find another?
Grade: PMG Gem UNC 66 EPQ
Lot #1580 - Fractional Currency - ($ 1,000.00 - $ 2,000.00)
Fr. 1291 25c Third Issue
An exceptional example of this available type that is rarely seen in grades this nice. Excellent margins and nearly perfect centering add greatly to the visual impact of this piece. The back color is superb and the embossing seemingly bottomless. With Superb Gems being an easy four-figure item we expect this example to reach that price level as well. We sold an identically graded example in our 2012 PCDA sale for $1,150 and this very same note brought just short of $1,000 over five years ago.
Grade: PMG Gem UNC 66 EPQ
Lot #1581 - Fractional Currency - ($ 450.00 - $ 850.00)
Fr. 1291SP 25c Third Issue Wide Margin Face
A bright and very satisfying example of this Fessenden wide margin specimen. The bronzing of "SPECIMEN" is inverted on the back as usual. This note falls a single point short of being finest known at PMG. The Green Sheet asking price is $320 in this grade but we are pretty certain this will go well beyond that mark.
Grade: PMG Gem UNC 65 EPQ
Lot #1582 - Fractional Currency - ($ 2,000.00 - $ 4,000.00)
Fr. 1292 25c Third Issue
It is difficult to know where to start with this description so here it goes. This note is Top Pop for both services and it has easily met the requirements for a Superb Gem Fessenden note. This variety with "A" on face is far tougher to locate in high grades because virtually always there is at least one smaller margin. The colors are superb, the embossing as deep as most existentialist thinking, and the eye appeal second to none. We recently sold a Fr. 1291 in PMG 66 EPQ for $1,150 and this note is vastly superior to that one.
Grade: PMG Superb Gem UNC 67 EPQ
Lot #1583 - Fractional Currency - ($ 375.00 - $ 625.00)
Fr. 1292 25c Third Issue
Only a smaller bottom margin precludes this note from achieving a much better grade. These 'A' on face Fessenden notes are much scarcer and we have routinely seen Ch. CU notes bringing $300 or more.
Grade: PCGS Ch. New 63
Lot #1584 - Fractional Currency - ($ 450.00 - $ 850.00)
Fr. 1294SP 25c Third Issue Wide Margin Back
Top Pop. PMG has given this note top honors in relation to any other examples they have graded of this number and it's easy to see why. Fully wide with perfect centering on all sides. Deep embossing and fresh paper surfaces attest to the validity of the EPQ designation.
Grade: PMG Gem UNC 66 EPQ
Lot #1585 - Fractional Currency - ($ 250.00 - $ 500.00)

Grade: PCGS Superb Gem New 67 PPQ
Lot #1588 - Fractional Currency - ($ 2,500.00 - $ 5,000.00)
Fr. 1316 50c Second Issue
Top Pop for this variety and nobody is an even close second. Between both services, only one other example has even been graded as a Gem 65. A truly astounding example of this number that is deceptively scarce and an outright rarity in this state of preservation. Recent market trends have shown that high-grade Fractionals are seeing a reemergence in demand that has been waning in recent years.
Grade: PMG Superb Gem UNC 67 EPQ
Lot #1589 - Fractional Currency - ($ 175.00 - $ 325.00)
Fr. 1316 50c Second Issue
A bit of corner handling is seen on this scarcer number with '18-63' surcharges.
Grade: PCGS Abt. New 50 PPQ
Lot #1590 - Fractional Currency - ($ 450.00 - $ 750.00)
Fr. 1318 50c Second Issue
This note has truly special quality in every respect. A beauty that is worthy of an exceptional price.
Grade: PCGS Gem New 66 PPQ
Lot #1591 - Fractional Currency - ($ 175.00 - $ 325.00)
Fr. 1318 50c Second Issue
One of the nicest AUs you will ever see of this type. Partial plate number '90' is exposed in the lower right corner due to the fact that the margins on this piece are absolutely enormous.
Grade: PCGS Ch. Abt. New 55 PPQ
Lot #1592 - Fractional Currency - ($ 250.00 - $ 500.00)
Fr. 1322 50c Second Issue
Exceptional eye appeal and loads of deep embossing make this a tremendous buying opportunity if you've wanted to add a nice fiber paper Fractional to your collection without spending four-figures to obtain a Gem.
Grade: PCGS Ch. Abt. New 55 PPQ
Lot #1593 - Fractional Currency - ($ 225.00 - $ 375.00)
Fr. 1327 50c Third Issue
A light corner bend is all that keeps this scarcer 'A' on face red back Spinner from a better grade.
Grade: PCGS Ch. Abt. New 58 PPQ
Lot #1594 - Fractional Currency - ($ 600.00 - $ 1,200.00)
Fr. 1329 50c Third Issue
Superb embossing and great color are seen on this scarcer Allison-Spinner hand-signed note. We don't want to gush too greatly but this is one of the prettiest pieces of Fractional currency that we have ever seen. With absolutely gigantic margins such as this and just a couple of lightly handled corners, we strongly suspect that this will bring all the money and then some once the hammer falls.
Grade: PMG Abt. New 55
Lot #1595 - Fractional Currency - ($ 175.00 - $ 325.00)
Fr. 1334 50c Third Issue
A scarcer Spinner number with 'A' on face position indicator. Deeply embossed and with excellent margins.
Grade: PCGS XF 45 PPQ
Lot #1596 - Fractional Currency - ($ 250.00 - $ 500.00)
Fr. 1335 50c Third Issue
A wonderfully margined and fresh example of this much scarcer subtype that has surcharges on the back. These are worth far more than the abysmally common Fr. 1331.
Grade: PMG Abt. UNC 55 EPQ
Lot #1597 - Fractional Currency - ($ 750.00 - $ 1,500.00)
Fr. 1339 50c Third Issue
A pristine Type II Spinner with extraordinary centering.
Grade: PCGS Gem New 66 PPQ
Lot #1598 - Fractional Currency - ($ 1,500.00 - $ 3,000.00)
Fr. 1342 50c Third Issue
About as nice a Type II Spinner as you are likely to find and particularly so for this number. This "A" on face note is certainly scarcer than most of the other Type II backed notes but in these advanced grades it becomes a real rarity. This note has earned both the "Exceptional Paper Quality" designation as well as the comment "great bronzing." Gems of this number are routinely low four-figure items as evidenced by this same note's 2007 Long Beach Sale price realized of $1,437.50.
Grade: PMG Gem UNC 66 EPQ
Lot #1599 - Fractional Currency - ($ 600.00 - $ 1,200.00)

This scarce 50c note has virtually perfect centering. It's wonderful.
Grade: PCGS Gem New 66
Lot #1600 - Fractional Currency - ($ 200.00 - $ 400.00)
Fr. 1342 50c Third Issue
A deeply embossed and utterly beautiful example of this much scarcer Type II Spinner with 'A' on face position indicator.
Grade: PCGS XF 45 PPQ
Lot #1601 - Fractional Currency - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
Fr. 1343SP 50c Third Issue Wide Margin Face
If there is one Fractional specimen type that has always been overwhelmingly popular with collectors over the years it is Justice face specimens. This one is a real beauty with superb centering and boldly printed devices. Throw out the Green Sheet if you have any designs of adding this treasure to your collection.
Grade: PMG Ch. UNC 64
Lot #1602 - Fractional Currency - ($ 2,000.00 - $ 4,000.00)
Fr. 1345 50c Third Issue
There is nothing to dislike about this red back Justice note and we are in utter agreement with the third-party grade. An enormously margined and deeply embossed example with ravishing ink colors and luminescent bronzing. This note is tied with only two others at both grading services combined. The combination of quality and rarity will carry the day as it did over five years ago when this note brought $2,185 at the 2007 Long Beach Sale.
Grade: PMG Gem UNC 66 EPQ
Lot #1603 - Fractional Currency - ($ 375.00 - $ 525.00)
Fr. 1356 50c Third Issue
Cavernous embossing is seen throughout on this hand-signed note with back surcharges. A couple of corner folds account for the grade. Nice AUs routinely bring $300 or so.
Grade: PMG Abt. UNC 55
Lot #1604 - Fractional Currency - ($ 600.00 - $ 1,200.00)
Fr. 1357 50c Third Issue
An exceptionally well-margined and boldly signed example of this ever-popular fiber paper Justice type note. The Green Sheet asking price is $525 in this grade but we are pretty sure that is a more conservative assessment of value.
Grade: PMG XF 40
Lot #1605 - Fractional Currency - ($ 750.00 - $ 1,500.00)
Fr. 1358SP 50c Third Issue Wide Margin Back
Top Pop at both services combined. Superb grade wide margin back specimens are quite rare and this one is indeed fully wide as well. Bright paper surfaces, bold ink colors and radiant bronze will make this a handsome addition to someone's collection.
Grade: PMG Gem UNC 65 EPQ
Lot #1606 - Fractional Currency - ($ 1,500.00 - $ 3,000.00)
Fr. 1364 50c Third Issue
A much scarcer "1" on face Justice note that has three enormous margins and an adequate fourth. Sharply printed devices, great color and extremely deep embossing make this note a real prize for one lucky bidder. In the not too distant past the few Gems that showed up of this variety went well into four-figure territory and after recent auction results we suspect that will again be the case tonight.
Grade: PMG Gem UNC 65 EPQ
Lot #1607 - Fractional Currency - ($ 300.00 - $ 600.00)
Fr. 1368 50c Third Issue
A scarcer and, most definitely, underrated variety with '1' on face and widely spaced surcharges. This note is fully margined on all sides with embossing deeper than the Grand Canyon.
Grade: PCGS XF 40 PPQ
Lot #1608 - Fractional Currency - ($ 6,000.00 - $ 12,000.00)
Fr. 1370 50c Third Issue
A lovely example of this highly coveted fiber paper Justice type with widely spaced surcharges and green back. It possesses spectacular margins for the type, great centering and razor sharp corners. The eye appeal of such a note is at the top end of the spectrum and there are no others that even come close. By far the highest graded example at PMG and PCGS has only graded one note 65PPQ with no others even achieving gem status. A note which has become famous in popular folklore but which is well worth the price of admission. The Green Sheet asking price of $5,500 should be blown off the hinges during the opening moments of bidding when one considers the fact that it has sold for upwards of $8,000 in recent years.
Grade: PMG Superb Gem UNC 67 EPQ
Lot #1609 - Fractional Currency - ($ 2,500.00 - $ 5,000.00)
Fr. 1376 50c Fourth Issue Top Pop
Of the roughly 500 notes graded at both services, this stands alone as the only Superb Gem of the whole bunch. Leviathan margins and micrometer-perfect centering are complemented by crackerjack embossing and flawless color. A bold swath of blue color is seen on the right side of the note which only attests to its originality and beauty. This has become the golden child of later fractional types as for the past several years well-heeled collectors have become infatuated with obtaining as many high-grade examples as they can get their hands on. Well this is the best of the best and considering that we just saw a PMG Gem 66 EPQ sell for $1,725 at FUN, our guess is that the present example could see close to double that amount.
Grade: PMG Superb Gem UNC 67 EPQ
Lot #1610 - Fractional Currency - ($ 700.00 - $ 1,000.00)

Here is a quite rare replacement on this very early and desirable series. Schwan lists just six known replacements for this type - rarely available in any grade. This is an evenly circulated, problem-free example.

Grade: PMG Gem UNC 65 EPQ
Lot #1616 - Military Payment Certificates - ($ 200.00 - $ 400.00)
Series 471 50c 3/10/47 - 3/22/48
This early series piece of MPC looks like a near Gem through the third-party holder.
Grade: PCGS Ch. Abt. New 58
Lot #1617 - Military Payment Certificates - ($ 250.00 - $ 500.00)
Series 471 $1 3/10/47 - 3/22/48
A stunning example of this whole denomination MPC from a scarcer early series. Through the holder this has the appearance of a near Gem and we are pretty sure the Green Sheet asking price of $150 in AU 50 will be crushed once the hammer falls.
Grade: PCGS Ch. Abt. New 58
Lot #1618 - Military Payment Certificates - ($ 300.00 - $ 600.00)
Series 471 $10 3/10/47 - 3/22/48
Huge margins and perfect centering are seen on this superbly inked MPC. With three main folds it seems plausible that some people will see this as right on the edge of the full XF grade.
Grade: PMG Ch. VF 35 EPQ
Lot #1619 - Military Payment Certificates - ($ 350.00 - $ 650.00)
Series 472 25c 3/22/48 - 6/20/51

Lot #1621 - Military Payment Certificates - ($ 150.00 - $ 300.00)
Series 481 10c 6/20/51 - 5/25/54

Grade: PMG Gem UNC 66 EPQ
Lot #1622 - Military Payment Certificates - ($ 750.00 - $ 1,500.00)
Series 521 5c 5/25/54 - 5/27/58 Replacement Top Pop
This is a very scarce replacement to begin with but it is especially rare in this grade. PCGS has only graded a half dozen examples to date; this note is by far the nicest as the other five grade Fine or lower. A bright and colorful example that faces up more like an AU piece. If you are putting together an advanced MPC collection, then this note belongs there at any cost.
Grade: PCGS XF 40 PPQ
Lot #1623 - Military Payment Certificates - ($ 1,750.00 - $ 3,250.00)
Series 521 $1 5/25/54 - 5/27/58 Replacement
First printing. This is a very scarce replacement note that is an outright rarity at this grade level. This is the finest that we can recall ever having seen. When these do appear, which is not often, they are almost always in low grade and with minor problems. This beautiful note has earned the coveted EPQ designation and has some light evidence of circulation barely visible through the holder. The Green Sheet only lists a value up to VF at $650. This absolute prize will bring multiples of that figure.
Grade: PMG Abt. UNC 55 EPQ
Lot #1624 - Military Payment Certificates - ($ 375.00 - $ 625.00)
Series 521 $10 5/25/54 - 5/27/58
First printing. In XF or better this becomes quite a condition rarity. The present example is bright and refreshing with bright ink colors and wonderful print quality.
Grade: PMG XF 40 EPQ
Lot #1625 - Military Payment Certificates - ($ 750.00 - $ 1,500.00)
Series 541 50c 5/27/58 - 5/26/61
First printing. A note that we rarely see in this state of preservation. It is bright, colorful and perfectly centered. Gems routinely sell for many hundreds of dollars and then some.
Grade: PMG Gem UNC 66 EPQ
Lot #1626 - Military Payment Certificates - ($ 750.00 - $ 1,500.00)
Series 541 $1 5/27/58 - 5/26/61

Grade: PMG Gem UNC 66 EPQ
Lot #1627 - Military Payment Certificates - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
Series 591 $10 5/26/61 - 1/6/64
Fold counters very well may consider this note to be XF or just about so. Either way, it is a much scarcer denomination from this issue and worthy of a strong bid or two.
Grade: PCGS VF 30

Grade: PMG Gem UNC 66 EPQ
Lot #1631 - Military Payment Certificates - ($ 300.00 - $ 600.00)
Series 641 $10 8/31/65 - 10/21/68
Third Printing. AU is a far more common grade for this issue and denomination than is near Gem. Either way, it should blow past its wholesale price of $200 in Gem 65.
Grade: PMG Gem UNC 66 EPQ
Lot #1632 - Military Payment Certificates - ($ 200.00 - $ 400.00)

Lot #1633 - Military Payment Certificates - ($ 750.00 - $ 1,500.00)
Series 661 $1 10/21/68 - 8/11/69
An essentially perfect example of this gorgeous later issue MPC. Tied with others at PCGS in this grade with none finer. A couple of years ago we sold an example in this grade for over $1,000 and we would not be surprised to see that mark tested once again.
Grade: PCGS Superb Gem New 69 PPQ
Lot #1634 - Military Payment Certificates - ($ 300.00 - $ 600.00)
