Here is a lovely, well centered St. Louis $2 that is one of 60 serial numbers reported. Of the 15 notes graded by PCGS there are five in XF 40. This note was once graded '55' and I can see why as it's lovely. Maybe a bit flat, but lovely.

Lot #1079 - Large Size Type Notes > Federal Reserve Bank Notes - ($ 25,000.00 - $ 50,000.00)
Fr. 776 $2 1918 Dallas #1
This serial #1 Battleship would be the highlight of most collections, just as it is here. Even the bankers of the newly formed Federal Reserve system were reticent to keep the newly issued note of the higher denomination. A good number of the low serial numbers were saved for officers and various government collections. This note has been part of the Rickey Collection for a decade and now it can be a cornerstone of your collection, whether that means from the Dallas Fed, $2 Battleships, low serial numbers or FRBNs.

This is the last San Francisco Battleship and there are 63 serial numbers reported. PCGS has graded 14 notes, with only one example grading better than this note. The census shows eight UNCs; I suppose they could all be AU, but not likely. This is a lovely AU example.

This is the finest grade of the seven notes seen by PCGS. It's currently graded XF 40, although once it was graded AU. I feel this might be a closer, more accurate grade. It has great color on the face while the back clearly shows a centerfold.

Lot #1131 - Large Size Type Notes > Federal Reserve Bank Notes - ($ 7,500.00 - $ 15,000.00)
Fr. 823 $20 1918 Atlanta
There are 42 serial numbers reported but only a couple appear to be UNC. In fact, this is the only note graded UNC by PMG. The note is fresh, evenly circulated and with great quality. These $20 FRBNs are as rare as can be in UNC, or even in AU. Considering the fact that this note has been graded UNC or Gem more than once it seems like a real no-brainer to bring a nice premium.
Grade: PMG Ch. Abt. UNC 58
Lot #1132 - Large Size Type Notes > Federal Reserve Bank Notes - ($ 30,000.00 - $ 60,000.00)
Fr. 824 $20 1915 Chicago
If you have read my cataloging for very long you will understand that $20 FRBNs in uncirculated condition are at the top of my underrated varieties group. PCGS says they have graded six UNCs but the serial number census indicates only three known. This note is not in that census either. Currently tied for finest graded by PCGS as a '66 PPQ' and it's amazing that now there are more. This is a great opportunity to get the best, and cost should be a distant consideration.
Grade: PCGS Gem New 66 PPQ
Lot #1133 - Large Size Type Notes > Federal Reserve Bank Notes - ($ 5,000.00 - $ 10,000.00)
Fr. 825 $20 1918 St. Louis
This note, which appeared in our 2004 sale and realized $430, is the third finest graded. It's a quality example and it appears that only two are graded higher.
Grade: PMG VF 25
Lot #1134 - Large Size Type Notes > Federal Reserve Bank Notes - ($ 4,500.00 - $ 9,000.00)
Fr. 826 $20 1915 Kansas City
The census shows 29 serial numbers reported and 6 notes graded by PCGS. This note is the finest graded but it is likely there may be a couple finer ones elsewhere. This note is nicely centered with good color.
Grade: PCGS VF 35 PPQ
Lot #1135 - Large Size Type Notes > Federal Reserve Bank Notes - ($ 7,500.00 - $ 15,000.00)
Fr. 826a $20 1915 Kansas City
This note is listed as a Fr. 826a and is the only one known with the same, yet larger bank signatures. It seems very similar to the Fr. 826 when shown with it. Only known example.
Grade: PCGS VF 20 PPQ
Lot #1136 - Large Size Type Notes > Federal Reserve Bank Notes - ($ 4,000.00 - $ 8,000.00)
Fr. 827 $20 1915 Kansas City
This is 1 of 35 serial numbers reported for this Kansas City district $20. PCGS has graded seven of these notes and this example is the best among them. PMG graded two in XF 45. This note is attractive for the grade.
Grade: PCGS VF 30
Lot #1137 - Large Size Type Notes > Federal Reserve Bank Notes - ($ 7,500.00 - $ 15,000.00)
Fr. 828 $20 1915 Dallas
Look what I found! This is the finest note known of the 35 serial numbers reported, of which 8 are PCGS graded. This is the best of all! It was graded Ch. UNC and sold at a Heritage sale for $29,900 in 2006. This note is a beauty that has excellent centering and color. In 2008 an XF brought over $27,000.
Grade: PCGS Ch. Abt. New 58
Lot #1138 - Large Size Type Notes > Federal Reserve Bank Notes - ($ 10,000.00 - $ 20,000.00)
Fr. 829 $20 1915 Dallas
A Dallas rarity that is one of six serial numbers reported and the only example graded by either grading service. The top edge is unevenly trimmed hence the 'apparent' grade. The color is quite nice as well. This note realized $23,000 in the Tom Flynn Collection and it was 10 years before that when another appeared. PCGS notes: top edge trimmed.
Grade: PCGS VF 30 Apparent
Lot #1139 - Large Size Type Notes > Federal Reserve Bank Notes - ($ 25,000.00 - $ 50,000.00)
Fr. 830 $20 1915 Dallas
This variety is ultra rare with only four serial numbers reported, and with just three different notes offered - ever. The last of this type offered was in the Tom Flynn 'Perfect Storm' Collection, in the same grade as this example, and it reached $103,500, a strong price at that time.
Grade: PMG Ch. Fine 15
Lot #1140 - Large Size Type Notes > Federal Reserve Bank Notes - ($ 25,000.00 - $ 50,000.00)
Fr. 831 $50 1918 St. Louis
There are now 51 serial numbers recorded for the king of the FRBN series, that for years was believed to have 30 or so outstanding. Most all of those were sought out by William Philpot, president of the Texas Bankers Association, and I believe that's the reason few are PPQ or EPQ and no UNCs. They were removed quickly from circulation and put away in the Dallas Fed by Mr. Philpot. PCGS has graded 12 notes, including one UNC, three better and three the same grade as this one. This issue is being graded a bit tougher today than in Mr. Phil's time.
Grade: PCGS Ch. Abt New 55

There are 55 serial numbers reported and there seems to be a short run of serial numbers of high quality examples. This note was graded PMG Very Ch. 64 but now they don't think it is. There are 42 serial numbers reported and 13 have been graded by PMG. This example is the finest known and it realized $13,800 when sold on September 11, 2009. The other graded notes are not close in quality. A truly remarkable, fresh, well centered note. This note was graded 66 EPQ by PMG and now they have graded it Ch. Abt. UNC 58, yet it remains the finest known. It will be difficult to achieve his cost with this revelation. Maybe grading gives a false sense of security, or possibly it was a rare mistake, or someone mishandled this note when regraded. I don't know the answer as I've not seen the note out of a holder. I certainly would be devastated if I was the owner.

There are 23 examples known of this Boston $100 Red Seal variety. Here is the finest of the 10 graded by PCGS. This note has been off the market since 2006. We have sold a PMG '66' at $55,200 and a PCGS '65' at $66,125 when they appeared two to four years back. If you want the finest then here's your opportunity.
Grade: PCGS Superb Gem New 67 PPQ
Lot #1487 - Large Size Type Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 4,000.00 - $ 8,000.00)
Fr. 1072b $100 1914RS Boston
A sharp looking Boston $100 that is one of seventeen serial numbers reported. There is a PCGS XF 40 PPQ and likely a couple of others that are better than this note which is graded VF 25 Net with PMG noting 'repaired'. It's quite nice for that harsh comment.
Grade: PMG VF 25 Net
Lot #1488 - Large Size Type Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 4,000.00 - $ 8,000.00)
Fr. 1073a $100 1914RS New York
A lovely, mid-grade Red Seal $100 that is one of 15 serial numbers reported. PCGS has graded only three notes, two VF 20s and one 'apparent'. This is a problem free note, with a couple of UNCs, or close, in the census.
Grade: PCGS VF 20
Lot #1489 - Large Size Type Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 7,000.00 - $ 14,000.00)
Fr. 1073b $100 1914RS New York
There are only eight serial numbers reported in the Track & Price census. This is shown as the best known and is listed as a '40' but PCGS calls it VF 30. I can see room for both grades. It's certainly the finest known.
Grade: PCGS VF 30
Lot #1490 - Large Size Type Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 4,000.00 - $ 8,000.00)
Fr. 1074a $100 1914RS Philadelphia
This is a pretty note that has been called '40' but PCGS believes it's a VF 30, making it likely the fourth best of the 15 serial numbers reported. There is a serial #C1A that is the finest known.
Grade: PCGS VF 30
Lot #1491 - Large Size Type Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 9,000.00 - $ 18,000.00)
Fr. 1074b $100 1914RS Philadelphia
This note is tied for the finest graded by PCGS but of the 24 in the census there are two others that could approach this note. Great brightness and nicely centered with excellent paper quality. A note of which you can be proud.
Grade: PCGS Abt. New 53 PPQ
Lot #1492 - Large Size Type Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 1,750.00 - $ 3,500.00)
Fr. 1075a $100 1914RS Cleveland
There are only six serial numbers reported but this must be close to the bottom of the group. The seal is very weak and there is plenty of wear and edge splits. PCGS notes: edge splits.
Grade: PCGS VG 8 Apparent
Lot #1493 - Large Size Type Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 4,500.00 - $ 9,000.00)
Fr. 1075b $100 1914RS Cleveland
The census indicates 23 serial numbers recorded and PMG has only graded five, with two other VF 25s and one better. This note is quite nice for the grade and without problems.
Grade: PMG VF 25
Lot #1494 - Large Size Type Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 8,500.00 - $ 12,000.00)
Fr. 1076a $100 1914RS Richmond
There is a serial #E1A and it may be better but I don't believe it's in a collector's hands. This is the finest known of the 16 serial numbers reported. Great color and excellent centering on this example. It's really lovely and rare.
Grade: PCGS XF 45
Lot #1495 - Large Size Type Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 10,000.00 - $ 20,000.00)
Fr. 1076b $100 1914RS Richmond
There are only seven serial numbers reported and none that approach this in quality (VF 20 is next). This note, with excellent paper quality, was graded AU by me in 1996. A wonderful opportunity to get a high quality rarity.
Grade: PCGS XF 40
Lot #1496 - Large Size Type Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 4,000.00 - $ 8,000.00)
Fr. 1077a $100 1914RS Atlanta
This note has everything going for it as to quality for the grade. I am quite surprised it's not PPQ. The centering is great and so is the color and paper quality. There are only nine serial numbers reported, with two UNCs, or close, and an XF.
Grade: PCGS VF 30
Lot #1497 - Large Size Type Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 3,000.00 - $ 6,000.00)
Fr. 1078a $100 1914RS Chicago
There are just 11 serial numbers reported, including the #G1A, which I assume is in the Chicago Fed display, with no other UNCs known. This is the best of three graded by PCGS, but there should be three better. A pleasing, problem free Fine.
Grade: PCGS Fine 12
Lot #1498 - Large Size Type Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 27,500.00 - $ 55,000.00)
Fr. 1078b $100 1914RS Chicago
There are 30 serial numbers reported on this variety but only five graded by PCGS. This example last appeared in a September 2006 Heritage sale; it was graded Gem and brought $40,250. Now it has been graded by PCGS. It's a bright Red Seal with very nice centering. A better example, graded PMG 67, realized $135,125 in a September 2008 Heritage sale.
Grade: PCGS Very Ch. New 64
Lot #1499 - Large Size Type Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 8,000.00 - $ 16,000.00)
Fr. 1079a $100 1914RS St. Louis
I am shocked to see there are 30 serial numbers reported for this variety Red Seal from St. Louis. Although this is the finest graded by PCGS, PMG has graded a '67' that realized $135,125 in 2008. There are several other very high grades but this is a lovely circ example.
Grade: PCGS VF 35
Lot #1500 - Large Size Type Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 8,000.00 - $ 16,000.00)
Fr. 1079b $100 1914RS St. Louis
This is a lovely circ St. Louis $100 with exceptional color and centering. One of 15 serial numbers reported and possibly three circ examples that could be nicer. This note has no apologies needed, that's for sure.
Grade: PCGS VF 30
Lot #1501 - Large Size Type Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 12,500.00 - $ 25,000.00)
Fr. 1080b $100 1914RS Minneapolis
This must be the second finest known of the 13 serial numbers reported in Track & Price. There is a PMG 40 and this note, VF 30, at the top. This note is the best that PCGS has graded. Great color and super centering. In 2009 we sold a PMG 40 at $16,400.
Grade: PCGS VF 30
Lot #1502 - Large Size Type Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 7,000.00 - $ 14,000.00)
Fr. 1081a $100 1914RS Kansas City
The census shows nine serial numbers reported but none are better than VF at PCGS. I had an UNC back in the day. This example should be the third finest known now.
Grade: PCGS VF 20
Lot #1503 - Large Size Type Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 17,500.00 - $ 35,000.00)
Fr. 1081b $100 1914RS Kansas City
There are 18 serial numbers reported and only two graded by PCGS. There is an example, likely similar grade, a serial number away from this note. A bright, fresh and well centered example. In 2008 a PMG 45 realized $74,750 but don't look for a repeat of that anytime soon.
Grade: PCGS Abt. New 53
Lot #1504 - Large Size Type Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 4,000.00 - $ 8,000.00)
Fr. 1082a $100 1914RS Dallas
An ultra rare Dallas $100 that is one of five serial numbers reported, with two of the five in higher grades. This note is the only one that PCGS has seen. Dallas notes are rare and popular.
Grade: PCGS Fine 12
Lot #1505 - Large Size Type Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 12,500.00 - $ 25,000.00)
Fr. 1082b $100 1914RS Dallas
There are just six serial numbers reported. This note was graded AU in the 1999 census when I sold it but now it's graded XF 40. Even so, it remains the finest known. A PMG Fine 15 brought $57,500 in 2008.
Grade: PCGS XF 40
Lot #1506 - Large Size Type Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 5,000.00 - $ 10,000.00)
Fr. 1083a $100 1914RS San Francisco #L514A
A lovely, low serial #L514A but not quite the quality of the serial #1 that recently sold. The Track & Price census shows 10 serial numbers reported, with two notes better than this beauty that was called XF.
Grade: PCGS VF 35
Lot #1507 - Large Size Type Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 18,000.00 - $ 35,000.00)
Fr. 1083b $100 1914RS San Francisco
This note was graded '66' by CGA but PCGS calls it a Ch. Abt. New 58. PMG has also graded a Gem, and there are three others that should be UNC, or close. This note has wonderful color and centering, appearing bright and fresh.
Grade: PCGS Ch. Abt. New 58
Lot #1508 - Large Size Type Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 3,500.00 - $ 7,000.00)
Fr. 1084 $100 1914BS Boston
This is the finest known example of the 30 serial numbers reported. PCGS has seen 10 notes with no other UNCs. This is a fresh, well centered jewel that is sure to attract attention.
Grade: PCGS Gem New 65
Lot #1509 - Large Size Type Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 1,750.00 - $ 3,500.00)
Fr. 1085 $100 1914BS Boston
There are 39 serial numbers reported in the Track & Price census. Six notes have been graded by PCGS. This note is the finest graded by PCGS but there is at least an AU 50 by PMG, along with several others possible.
Grade: PCGS XF 40 PPQ
Lot #1510 - Large Size Type Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 3,500.00 - $ 7,000.00)
Fr. 1087 $100 1914BS Boston
A lovely '63' from Boston that is oneof the fourteen serial numbers reported. Nine notes are graded by PCGS and they have called just a single example better than this note, making this likely the second or third finest known. Great centering along with excellent color and paper quality.
Grade: PCGS Ch. New 63 PPQ
Lot #1511 - Large Size Type Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 2,750.00 - $ 5,500.00)
Fr. 1088 $100 1914BS New York
The census shows 211 serial numbers reported, with 49 graded by PCGS and only one in a better grade. This is a lovely, fresh, well centered example.
Grade: PCGS Very Ch. New 64 PPQ
Lot #1512 - Large Size Type Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 1,000.00 - $ 2,000.00)
Fr. 1089 $100 1914BS New York
This is the finest graded note by PMG. There are several others graded the same, but no UNCs are known. Let's call this note tied for second finest known.
Grade: PMG XF 40
Lot #1513 - Large Size Type Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 1,500.00 - $ 3,000.00)
Fr. 1090 $100 1914BS New York
There are 136 serial numbers recorded on this variety and PCGS has graded 23, with only a single example being of a higher grade, but no UNCs. This note has a lovely appearance.
Grade: PCGS Ch. Abt. New 55
Lot #1514 - Large Size Type Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 4,000.00 - $ 8,000.00)
Fr. 1091 $100 1914BS New York
A real peach from the Rickey Collection that is one of eighty serial numbers recorded. Thirteen notes have been graded by PCGS and only one is of a higher grade. This note is so nice I can certainly see why the PPQ.
Grade: PCGS Gem New 65 PPQ
Lot #1515 - Large Size Type Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 1,750.00 - $ 3,500.00)
Fr. 1092 $100 1914BS Philadelphia
There are 160 serial numbers reported but PCGS has seen only 10 notes. This is the finest among them but the Track & Price census shows many UNCs from a run. This note is lovely with great color and centering.
Grade: PCGS Ch. Abt. New 55
Lot #1516 - Large Size Type Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 1,500.00 - $ 3,000.00)
Fr. 1095 $100 1914BS Philadelphia
A nice quality, original note that is rare with only 12 serial numbers recorded. This note appears to be the finest known, not just the finest graded.
Grade: PMG VF 30
Lot #1517 - Large Size Type Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 1,500.00 - $ 3,000.00)
Fr. 1096 $100 1914BS Cleveland

Fr. 1097 $100 1914BS Cleveland
There are 20 serial numbers reported but only seven notes have been graded by PCGS. There is only one note graded better than this attractive circ example.
Grade: PCGS VF 35
Lot #1519 - Large Size Type Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 2,750.00 - $ 5,000.00)
Fr. 1098 $100 1914BS Cleveland
A lovely PMG graded note that is one of fifty-three serial numbers reported, with five or so possible UNCs. This is the highest TPG I would count.
Grade: PMG Ch. UNC 64
Lot #1520 - Large Size Type Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 7,500.00 - $ 15,000.00)
Fr. 1098* $100 1914BS Cleveland #D252*
The $100 star notes are rare, being few and far between. Thankfully there are two known from this Cleveland variety, this low #D252* and a #D6*, which is a bit nicer.
Grade: PCGS VF 20
Lot #1521 - Large Size Type Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 3,250.00 - $ 6,500.00)
Fr. 1099 $100 1914BS Cleveland

A high quality cir note that is one of 56 serial numbers reported. This example appears to be the third finest graded.
Grade: PCGS XF 45
Lot #1523 - Large Size Type Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 1,200.00 - $ 2,400.00)
Fr. 1101 $100 1914BS Richmond
A great looking note that has the facial appearance of an UNC. There are 22 serial numbers reported but only four notes have been graded by PCGS, with this example being the best. There could be a slightly higher grade note.
Grade: PCGS XF 40 PPQ
Lot #1524 - Large Size Type Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 3,000.00 - $ 6,000.00)
Fr. 1104 $100 1914BS Atlanta
This note is a beauty and the most available of all UNC 1914 $100s. PMG has graded 83 UNCs, of the 234 serial numbers reported, but only three are finer than this example.
Grade: PMG Gem UNC 66 EPQ
Lot #1525 - Large Size Type Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 800.00 - $ 1,600.00)

Lot #1526 - Large Size Type Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 1,500.00 - $ 3,000.00)
Fr. 1107 $100 1914BS Atlanta
The census shows only 23 serial numbers recorded, but the nine that PMG has graded indicates no UNCs and only a '58' graded higher than this example. This is a scarcer variety and a quality example.
Grade: PMG Abt. UNC 55 EPQ
Lot #1527 - Large Size Type Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 2,250.00 - $ 4,500.00)
Fr. 1108 $100 1914BS Chicago
The census indicates 123 serial numbers reported but PCGS has graded only 23, with 2 being of a higher grade than this example. The census indicates there might be one note, somewhere, that could be a point or two better.
Grade: PCGS Ch. New 63
Lot #1528 - Large Size Type Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 6,000.00 - $ 12,000.00)
Fr. 1108* $100 1914BS Chicago #G28*
There are only two stars of the district reported with this one being similar to the other except for the 'apparent' comments. PCGS notes: repaired tears at bottom center edge; paper clip rust stain on back. The other example sold in 2003 for $6,670 - a bargain from back in the day.
Grade: PCGS VF 20 Apparent

Lot #1540 - Large Size Type Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 125,000.00 - $ 250,000.00)
Fr. 1132-I $500 1918BS Minneapolis
Unique is a clear way to state the rarity of this Series of 1918 Minneapolis $500. This bank was unknown well into the 1990s when this example appeared, when it was sold in a private transaction for $140,000, or at least that was the rumor at the time. The low serial #I55A is of little help in determining the issuance but even when small size high denominations were printed the Minneapolis issues were low in virtually every instance. Let's face it, $500 was a pile of money unless it was part of the cash reserves of a bank. This note has been professionally restored by the industry's finest and it's now graded Fine 15 Apparent. The eye appeal remains excellent.
Grade: PCGS Fine 15 Apparent
