$5 1950-era FRN / SC Wrong Stock Error: Blue Seal Silver Certificate Overprint on Federal Reserve Note Stock; $5 1950-era FRN / USN Wrong Stock Error: Red Seal Legal Tender Overprint on Federal Reserve Note Stock
"The wrong stock error shares the elite stratum with the rarest of paper money mistakes. The wrong stock error carries the first and second printing of one type of currency and the overprint of another. These ultra-rarities occurred during periods when the BEP was producing more than one class of currency simultaneously; specifically from the mid-1950s through the early 1960s. There are three separate varieties documented... [One] subset, of which two specimens exist, is the era of 1950 $5 FRN with the blue overprint of the series of 1953 SC. The final piece is an era of 1950 $5 FRN demonstrating a red overprint from the series of 1953-B United States note (USN)." [From United States Paper Money Errors, Third Edition, Frederick J. Bart; reproduced with permission]. This lot contains the unique Legal Tender overprint from the series of 1953-B with the signatures of Smith and Dillon applied to a $5 Federal Reserve host note. The second, and equally spectacular item is Silver Certificate overprint from the series of 1953 with the signatures of Priest and Humphrey applied to a $5 Federal Reserve host note. In short, these are issued notes which simply can not exist! There is neither a series of 1953 or 1953-B FRN of any denomination. Unquestionably far more important than any double denomination. In fact, without reservation, the most important small size errors in existence. PCGS notes: small edge tear at bottom left. Two piece lot.

$5 / $10 1934-D J Kansas City J-A Double Denomination
This double denomination stunned the jaded CNN reporters when Frederick J. Bart showed it during a television broadcast. Aside from its celebrity status, it hails from the most abundant (if any subtype can be considered common) of the double denominations with 38 serial numbers presently recorded in the census. As such, the $5 / $10 remains the perennial selection as a type note to represent the mistake. This quality has been considered Gem CU for decades.

With the simultaneous production of multiple denominations within in the BEP one might think that such mistakes would occur and escape, yet to date only two examples have been verified. $1 1995 K Dallas K-A $10 Security Thread Embedded in $1 Stock
This note generated enormous buzz in the paper money community after Steve Sullivan reported it to Coin World. A segment of a security thread for the $10 denomination is actually embedded into, not merely resting atop, the pulp mixture for the uncut currency stock. Although rumors of a second piece sprang up immediately, your cataloguer examined the other piece and even without the aid of digital microscopy unhesitatingly declared it an alteration. This example remains unique. Although some consider this to be a wrong stock mistake, the preponderance of experts categorize this as a double denomination. Whatever your opinion, consider annexing it to your holdings.

We sold this note in March, 2005 at CPMX with the following lot description: "This is the first public offering of any $2 bill with this error, which merits an R-9 rating in Frederick J. Bart's book on errors. This note has a blue nylon fiber or thread embedded into the paper. It was there before the second and third printings. It caught part of the inking and then moved very slightly away leaving a blank void, which is especially visible under low power magnificaton or young eyes. The thread measures 3/4" long and lies atop the "T" in TWO and extends towards the green Treasury seal. By some miracle, the nylon thread remains attached to the note creating an obstructed print with retained fragment on a Deuce! According to reliable sources only one other example exists and it resides in a very advanced West Coast collection. If rarity alone determined the final price of this lot, very few collectors could afford it. As it is, when the bidding stops one extremely fortunate collector will add a very important note to his holdings without spending a fortune." Well, we were spot on with everything, except our estimate. Back in 2005, the note brought $5,290 on a presale estimate of $500-1,000. We're going to try the same estimate tonight and see where bidding stops.

$1 2003 L San Francisco L-* Incorrect, Additional District Number
"This unique star note error comes with a lengthy letter of authenticity by Frederick J. Bart, dated January 26, 2006, from which we borrow liberally here. In short, this was the top star note in a BEP-sealed brick which was blister packed or shrink wrapped. The discoverer could see not only the two normal "12s" on the right end, but also an additional district number through the shrink wrap. The entire brick was sent to Bart, who wisely photgraphed it before opening the plastic to examine the note. (A copy of the photograph accompanies this lot.) Bart examined all 1,000 notes in the brick and found none similar to the top note. The BEP barcode label on the outside of the shrink wrap indicates that the San Francisco (district 12) star notes replaced a bad batch of notes intended for Dallas (district 11). (The original barcode label accompanies this lot.) One can assume that either a press operator or rollertransferred the numeral "11" from the prevous Dallas production onto this note which has a complete San Francisco overprint. We concur with Bart who considers this note unique. The phrase "once-in-a-lifetime" is often overused, but it certainly seems appropriate here. Only one collector will own this item and it will redefine the caliber of the collection it enters. Four items included in this lot are: the error note, letter of authentication, photograph of the note in shrink wrap and BEP bar code." The above is from our 2006 catalog auction where this piece brought $10,925. In an identical market, we'd expect a similar realization tonight.

Tucson, Consolidated NB, 4287
It's been all of 45 years since I started in the field of national bank notes and I have handled just about everything I could imagine and serial #1 notes from Arizona are certainly near the top of the list for rarity and desirability for small size national bank note collections. There are 15 Arizona notes reported with two sheets of Prescott, a $5 and $10 from Tucson and a circ Winslow. This is one of two from the top of the first sheets. It does have a corner tip fold on one corner, but it's fresh, well centered and desirable. I certainly haven't had many chances to offer a rare #1 from Arizona.

$100-$50 Bank of Chester County, West Chester Uncut Pair
Uncut sheet of two notes that is extremely rare. Printers were Draper, Underwood, Bald & Spencer. The Panic of 1837 occurred at a time when all the conditions were ripe for a crash, credit was stretched and real estate soared. President Jackson's famous specie circular directed that public lands could only be paid for in silver or gold. That which was to be used to purchase land came back to the banks for redemption and redemption was impossible. Specie payments were halted and many businesses went into bankruptcy. Prudent management enabled the Bank of Chester County to weather the crisis. In August 1838 the bank resumed specie payments. The decade prior to 1837 was one of prosperity for the Bank of Chester County. When its first charter expired in 1825 it was rechartered for a period of 12 years. In 1837 it received its third charter, this time for 15 years the stock was worth $40 per share. The circulating notes were renewed from time to time as needed. In 1834 the $5, $10, $20, $500 and $1,000 were made from new plates.
