A stunning thing of beauty is this first Continental ace. For years this has been one of the most popular of all Continentals as it is the first one listed and this denomination is very desirable. Couple that with the fact that the May 1775 issue is somewhat scarcer and you have a real doozey of a note here. When Continentals first circulated they were worth their stated value and had not been devalued yet as they had later in the war. This one dollar denomination was a real workhorse and circulated freely and heavily, leaving virtually no higher grade circulated examples. The example sold by Heritage as part of the Collection of a Patriotic American was graded PCGS XF 45 PPQ and that brought $2,070 total and we would expect a similar price realized by this piece. Very well signed and numbered with a center fold and some handled corners it looks a heck of a lot more like an AU than it does an XF.

A gorgeous example of this scarcer first issue from which nice CU notes are quite a condition rarity. The note is deeply embossed, boldly printed and very well signed. But for a panel of toning along the left edge we would not have hesitated to grade this Choice CU.

A well signed and printed example of this very high grade first issue continental note. We do not often see uncirculated examples or even lightly circulated examples since these were redeemed at par early in the war and therefore circulated very freely and were worn down easily. Expect a healthy premium for this note compared to a typical AU later date Continental note.

A satisfying example of this Fugio fractional denomination type that has both the sundial motto as well as the thirteen colonies chain links on the back. To say that these fractional Continentals have been realizing strong prices is tantamount to saying that the Debt Ceiling Crisis is a growing concern.

Although the paper surfaces appear somewhat mottled there is only a single horizontal center fold that appears to account for the grade. High grade Fugio fractional Continentals are in great demand from a wide range of collectors and they always bring in the strong upper three figures or more.

This is actually a very scarce issue and denomination, even for contemporary counterfeits. While the upper right portion of the note has been restored it is an otherwise high grade and very attractive example of a really challenging note.

These pen cancelled contemporary counterfeits are not always so popular but the May 1777 issue counterfeits are much scarcer and very desirable. There are restorations at the corners and along the center fold but the eye appeal is very strong for the grade.

A single center fold is seen on this remarkably high-grade Georgia note. There is a tape repair piece in the middle of the open field that covers what was an open area. Georgia notes are generally seen in the Fine-Very Fine grade range and are rarely seen in this state of preservation.

It has been quite some time since we have seen a fractional denomination Georgia note. It is very well margined on all sides with border variety (d) which shows six ornaments to the right of the small v in the bottom margin. Although there are some internal tears along the center fold and some paper toning this is a very high grade note for this colony. Low serial number 52 adds to the value of this prize.

This is the much scarcer 1767 Maryland issue and this note is typical of notes from this issue. There is a large stain at top center as well as some restorations along the center fold. These notes were very crisp and cracked and were damaged very easily. Likely somewhere in the vicinity of an apparent Very Fine note we would expect a healthy price for this piece, especially considering it has low serial number 26.

An extraordinary example of this much scarcer early Maryland issue. The note is very well printed, boldly signed and with a nearly full left indent. There are a couple of minor edge splits and internal splits along the center fold which is far less than the problems typically seen with these notes. The Midnight Ride example was a PMG VF 30 and that brought $1,035; we would expect half that amount this evening from this lightly troubled example.

An enormously margined example with sharp corners and particularly bold printing and signature. A light degree of handling and exceptional grade for this type. This is a somewhat more challenging denomination and the opportunity to obtain a nicer example will require an exhausting search.

An unusually high grade example of this condition-challenged issue. The paper that these notes were printed on was very coarse and the lack of a vignette has always left them a little unpopular with colonial collectors. This well signed and numbered example is beautiful for the type as it is far above the problemed Fine examples that plague the market place.

A very nice example of the always popular Codfish design. This is the much scarcer 1776 Codfish note while it is the 1778 series that is most frequently seen. A well signed and boldly printed example with a very small central tear that affects little else.

The technical grade on this note is right on the cusp of the 35/40 grade but it is so well signed and boldly printed with every detail of the vignette showing that it is hard not to rightfully call it XF. Add to this the fact that it has jumbo sheet margins on all sides and you have the making of a note that is far more valuable than it's technical grade would indicate.

This Water Works note has all the look of a well embossed Choice CU note but there is a circular water stained area to the right of the note. A low serial number 58 does not hurt the case for the value of this piece.

All the signatures are intact on this early North Carolina note with the popular Holy Bible vignette. PCGS has mentioned a center split sewn together, backing and minor edge damage. All very consistent with about 98% of the extant notes from this colony.

A really nice example of this desirable 1761 issue that is bright, boldly signed and with mountainous embossing. PCGS notes there are edge splits and tears and a small hole but through the holder they do little to detract from the eye appeal of this piece. These have been bringing $200-$400 in this condition in recent auctions.

This is a beautiful 3 Pound note from this earlier colonial issue. It is well margined for the type, boldly signed and plenty well embossed. PCGS notes there are some edge tears but we see only one at top center. This denomination is listed in Friedberg as twice the value of the other denominations.

The technical grade on this note is VF/XF with a couple of small edge tears in the top margin. The eye appeal of this piece makes it two or three times as valuable as it is a stunning example for the type. This high denomination note is much scarcer than the sheet available lower denomination examples. It has leviathan sheet margins on all four sides the likes of which is rarely seen. Cavernous embossing and four bold signatures lend to the appeal of this desirable Magna Charta note. Throw away your known pricing structure if you truly covet this wonderful note.

General Francis Marion's Sweet Potato Dinner is the ever-popular central vignette seen on this note. There is some minor staining and some minor mounting remnants on the back. A very satisfying example of a note that is rarely seen in CU grades leaving collectors to scramble for the few AUs and XFs that exist. Typical nice AUs usually bring around $300 or so.

A really high grade example of a more available type that is usually seen in the VG-VF grade range. This note is bright and pretty well margined for the type with no folds and bold signatures. There are some light glue remains on the back corners which likely explains how this note survived in such a state of preservation. We have routinely seen nice AUs go for around $250-$300 so this should bring substantially more.

In terms of technical grade this is one of the nicer T-46 notes that you will find. It is very well signed, bright and boldly printed. PCGS notes there are "small holes" but they look a bit like larger pinholes to us as opposed to a deliberate hole. We will let the bidders decide. No matter how you slice it the eye appeal of this piece is as nice as most we see of this elusive type.

Another deceptively scarce star FRN to grace this auction and once again a missed opportunity will likely result in a big hole in your list.
