Continental Currency
-
($ 1,750.00 - $ 2,750.00)
CC-1 $1 May 10, 1775
A stunning thing of beauty is this first Continental ace. For years this has been one of the most popular of all Continentals as it is the first one listed and this denomination is very desirable. Couple that with the fact that the May 1775 issue is somewhat scarcer and you have a real doozey of a note here. When Continentals first circulated they were worth their stated value and had not been devalued yet as they had later in the war. This one dollar denomination was a real workhorse and circulated freely and heavily, leaving virtually no higher grade circulated examples. The example sold by Heritage as part of the Collection of a Patriotic American was graded PCGS XF 45 PPQ and that brought $2,070 total and we would expect a similar price realized by this piece. Very well signed and numbered with a center fold and some handled corners it looks a heck of a lot more like an AU than it does an XF.

CC-5 $5 May 10, 1775

CC-7 $7 May 10, 1775
A well signed and printed example of this very high grade first issue continental note. We do not often see uncirculated examples or even lightly circulated examples since these were redeemed at par early in the war and therefore circulated very freely and were worn down easily. Expect a healthy premium for this note compared to a typical AU later date Continental note.

Colonial Currency > Georgia

GA-70 $1/2 1776
It has been quite some time since we have seen a fractional denomination Georgia note. It is very well margined on all sides with border variety (d) which shows six ornaments to the right of the small v in the bottom margin. Although there are some internal tears along the center fold and some paper toning this is a very high grade note for this colony. Low serial number 52 adds to the value of this prize.

Colonial Currency > Maryland

This is the much scarcer 1767 Maryland issue and this note is typical of notes from this issue. There is a large stain at top center as well as some restorations along the center fold. These notes were very crisp and cracked and were damaged very easily. There are a couple of minor edge splits and internal splits along the center fold which is far less than the problems typically seen with these notes. The eye appeal of this later issue gold certificate is that of an Extremely Fine piece even if it technically falls a hair short. It is bright, colorful and very well margined and well centered. There is an ink scribble in the far left field that is not at first readily apparent. Without that this is a $400 note and, if recent auction results are any indication, the value of this Apparent graded piece isn't much less.

$50 1929 K Dallas K-A
With a printing of only 168,000 the Dallas fifty is generally considered to be the key to the series. This is valued at $400 in VF in the Schwartz/Lindquist guide and that fact is supported by the fact that Very Fine examples at auction routinely bring $400-$500. It seems like it's been some time since we've seen one at auction and that means there could be fireworks as the pent up demand for this note will be released and just about anything could happen.

All stars from this series are quite elusive with the Philadelphia note appearing to be no exception. It has far fewer auction appearances than the more available New York and Chicago stars. This note has three great margins and deep embossing all around. The Schwartz/Lindquist guide marks this at $500 in Choice CU and we feel that this is reasonably accurate based on its real scarcity.

This is actually a very solid grade star note from an issue that is next to impossible to find. The printing records show that there were 1.28 million printed for San Francisco but a check of auction records shows that hardly ever show up. This beauty has a single center fold and some other bending which accounts for the grade and the originality is superb. Low serial number L00000523* only adds to the allure and value of this note. Another deceptively scarce star FRN to grace this auction and once again a missed opportunity will likely result in a big hole in your list.
