2011 Memphis Auction > Memphis 2011 - Session 2 Part 2

Lot #1179 - Large Size Type Notes > Demand Notes - ($ 3,500.00 - $ 4,500.00)
Fr. 2 $5 1861
I'm proud to have a decent, problem free Demand Note to offer. This note is a Fine with a tiny pinhole in the center on the fold line. The census indicates 122 notes known with roughly half in a lower grade than this note. A nice looking circ that is quite generally problem free.
Grade: Fine/VF
Lot #1180 - Large Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 600.00 - $ 800.00)
Fr. 16 $1 1862
This early $1 Legal Tender has decent centering and nice color for the issue. The heavier folds appear a bit hidden.
Grade: PCGS VF 30
Lot #1181 - Large Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 4,000.00 - $ 8,000.00)
Fr. 18 $1 1869
Rich blue anti-counterfeit stain and deep colors bring this Rainbow Ace into full bloom. Many notes in Gem New holders have less eye-appeal. Any reason, if there is a discernable one, for a grade below Ch. New 63 is obscured by the encapsulation. When considering this note think Ch. New at a bargain price.
Grade: PMG Abt. UNC 55
Lot #1182 - Large Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 1,750.00 - $ 2,750.00)
Fr. 18 $1 1869 A.U. Wyman Courtesy Autograph
A fresh, lovely 1899 $1 Rainbow note that has excellent color and plenty of margins, although they are a bit skewed. This note has a courtesy autograph of A.U. Wyman, U.S. Treasurer, 1876, 1883-1885 to the right of the portrait. A scarce Rainbow to find autographed. This has been off the market for decades.
Grade: PCGS XF 40
Lot #1183 - Large Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 700.00 - $ 900.00)
Fr. 18 $1 1869

Few notes of any series get the Superb Gem New 67 PPQ designation. This note seems most deserving with superb centering, printing and paper quality.
Grade: PCGS Superb Gem New 67 PPQ

A set of nine notes, each with matching digits. Obviously this pristine set was saved by someone with all the right connections, but regardless of who saved them, this set is very impressive and highly unusual. I'm sure it will demand a good bid to take it home. This nine piece lot includes: #M11A Gem New 65 PPQ #M22A Ch. New 63 PPQ #M33A Very Ch. New 64 PPQ #M44A Very Ch. New 64 PPQ #M55A Apparent Very Ch. Lot #1190 - Large Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 3,000.00 - $ 5,000.00)
Fr. 39* $1 1917 Error
It's quite difficult to see the pre-face print fold over in the lower right corner, but it's there, and on a star note. Once again about 5% of the known notes are stars. There are three stars listed with the same grade but, naturally, none have the error. If you want both you can get something special here.
Grade: PCGS Very Ch. New 64PPQ
Lot #1191 - Large Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 1,500.00 - $ 2,500.00)
Fr. 39 $1 1917
Here is a lovely run of five 1917 $1 Legal Tenders that are consecutive and include a cut sheet of four notes within it. In order they grade: 63 PPQ, 65 PPQ, 64 PPQ, 63 and 64 PPQ. This is a very attractive group that should bring very solid bids as these are not available at supposed market prices. Five piece lot.
Grade: PCGS Graded
Lot #1192 - Large Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 300.00 - $ 5,000.00)
Fr. 40 $1 1923
Outstanding and amazing is this lovely Superb Gem UNC 67 EPQ example. There are a couple of '68s' and four or so '67s' known. Everything you could ask for in a high grade note.
Grade: PMG Superb Gem UNC 67 EPQ
Lot #1193 - Large Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 1,800.00 - $ 3,000.00)
Fr. 40 $1 1923 #A407B
A terrific way to add spice and value to a one-year, one signature Type Note without breaking the bank. A three-digit Red Seal with every conceivable attribute of the grade.
Grade: PCGS Gem New 65 PPQ
Lot #1194 - Large Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 2,750.00 - $ 3,500.00)
Fr. 41 $2 1862
This spell-binding Deuce appears Superb Gem New 67 from the front, with a single vertical fold and a soft bend or two evident on the back. The colors are among the richest we've seen on any example from this series and the margins are nothing short of enormous. The impression is razor sharp and the red and green inks could not possibly be more vibrant. There are two miniscule splits, hardly worth mentioning. Overall, an extraordinary specimen of this early Deuce.
Grade: XF/AU
Lot #1195 - Large Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 400.00 - $ 600.00)
Fr. 41 $2 1862
This note is Fine but the bottom edge is quite rough and uneven.
Grade: Fine/VF
Lot #1196 - Large Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 2,000.00 - $ 3,000.00)
Fr. 42 $2 1869
We rarely get notes graded by CGC but this $2 Rainbow has been. From what I can see it's quite a lovely note. This is the Deuce from the popular and important Rainbow series and this example is very nice in appearance. It has great color and centering, while the paper quality looks good. No doubt collectors will like an opportunity to acquire this Rainbow.
Grade: CGC VF 35 PQ
Lot #1197 - Large Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 2,000.00 - $ 3,000.00)
Fr. 42 $2 1869
This is as high-end as you are likely to see on a Rainbow Deuce. This note has good quality, super centering and excellent color.
Grade: PMG Ch. VF 35 EPQ
Lot #1198 - Large Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 1,500.00 - $ 2,000.00)
Fr. 42 $2 1869
A nice appearing Rainbow Deuce that has great color and the normal amount of folds, etc for the grade, while the centering is generally great. If slabbed I would expect a VF 25.
Grade: VF
Lot #1199 - Large Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 1,500.00 - $ 2,500.00)
Fr. 52 $2 1880 A.U. Wyman Courtesy Autograph
This note has been off the market for nearly 40 years. It's a lovely, original, nicely centered note with great color and the courtesy autograph of 'A.U. Wyman, Treas., in 1876, 1883-1885' in the field to the left of the capitol building.
Grade: PCGS Very Ch. New 64 PPQ
Lot #1200 - Large Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 900.00 - $ 1,200.00)
Fr. 52 $2 1880
A very attractive large brown seal with the Bruce-Wyman signatures. This note is not in the Track & Price census but a number of notes from the same range are. This note has excellent color and decent centering.
Grade: Ch. CU
Lot #1201 - Large Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 500.00 - $ 800.00)
Fr. 58 & 60 $2 1917
A lovely, fresh pair of 1917 Deuces that both came from sales back in the 1970s. Both are great notes. The Fr. 58 is graded Ch. Abt. New 55 PPQ and the Fr. 60 is Ch. Abt. New 58 PPQ.
Grade: PCGS Graded
Lot #1202 - Large Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 1,500.00 - $ 3,000.00)
Fr. 60* $2 1917
Somehow this lovely, new to the census star note slipped through the cracks and failed to be graded. It's fully UNC, fresh and original, but not with decent centering. This is one of only 5% of the total number of stars that are UNC and it's new to the census, but very close in range to another. In 2006 a similar note realized $1,552.50. Most UNCs have not been in Track & Price.
Grade: Ch. CU
Lot #1203 - Large Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 1,500.00 - $ 2,000.00)
Fr. 63a $5 1863
A lovely, high quality 1863 $5 Legal Tender that looks like a Gem from the centering and color but it appears there may be a light bend in one corner. I'm sure collectors will see a great note for the money here.
Grade: PCGS Ch. Abt. New 58 PPQ
Lot #1204 - Large Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 6,000.00 - $ 9,000.00)
Fr. 64 $5 1869
Wonderful Rainbow $5s are available on occasion but what better occasion than now! This PMG 66 EPQ is well centered with great explosive color and desirability for the grade and type.
Grade: PMG Gem UNC 66 EPQ
Lot #1205 - Large Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 2,500.00 - $ 4,000.00)
Fr. 64 $5 1869
A lovely Pioneer family Rainbow $5 that has exceptional color and paper quality, while the centering is just a bit skewed, hence the Choice designation. These have remained extremely popular and UNCs in this quality are valued very fairly.
Grade: PMG Ch. UNC 63 EPQ
Lot #1206 - Large Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 900.00 - $ 1,200.00)
Fr. 64 $5 1869
An evenly circulated Rainbow $5 that has decent centering. A nice note for a lower range VF.
Grade: VF
Lot #1207 - Large Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 3,000.00 - $ 4,000.00)
Fr. 70 $5 1880
This is the very scarce and seldom offered Scofield-Gilfillan signature combination with the large brown seal. This note was most elusive with only a small handful of notes known until a pack was found deep in a vault back East. Most were sold at very strong prices and were UNC. This note may not be from the group but it's a lovely Ch. AU 58 with good color and excellent centering. An opportunity to fill a hole in your collection of Pioneer family notes.
Grade: PMG Ch. Abt. UNC 58
Lot #1208 - Large Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 1,200.00 - $ 1,600.00)
Fr. 73 $5 1880
This note has the large red seal without spikes. It's EPQ quality and with very nice color as well. This series is quite undervalued in the current marketplace.
Grade: PMG Ch. UNC 64 EPQ
Lot #1209 - Large Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 400.00 - $ 600.00)

Grade: Ch. CU
Lot #1212 - Large Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 8,000.00 - $ 12,000.00)
Fr. 95b $10 1863
Intricately executed with every minute detail richly impressed. The red Treasury seal, the forest green under prints and the back are breath-taking. Three jumbo margins and an adequate lower one on this 'A' position piece. The tiniest bit of teller handling in the upper right attests to complete originality.
Grade: RCGS Ch. CU 63 PQ
Lot #1213 - Large Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 3,000.00 - $ 5,000.00)
Fr. 95b $10 1863
This 1863 $10 is virtually a match for the Fr. 126b Apparent 64 listed here. It's my guess this note just had a corner or handling that was too noticeable to grade it higher. The only easy way to see the flaws is through careful inspection when you hold it to the light. If this note were not graded many could be fooled. Broad margins and brilliant color on this example. PCGS notes edge restoration.
Grade: PCGS Apparent Ch. Abt. New 58
Lot #1214 - Large Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 1,500.00 - $ 2,000.00)

Lot #1216 - Large Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 6,000.00 - $ 8,000.00)
Fr. 116 $10 1901
Here is a wonderful Buffalo from a signature combination of Vernon-Treat. There are 161 notes known but only about 10% appear to be graded New or better. There are three others in this grade and seven better. Quite a beautiful example of the Buffalo note.
Grade: PMG Ch. UNC 64
Lot #1217 - Large Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 2,500.00 - $ 3,500.00)
Fr. 117 $10 1901
This is likely the rarest of all Buffalo notes with 99 serial numbers reported. This is a nice note with great color grade. Any folds are tough to see.

Lot #1219 - Large Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 1,000.00 - $ 1,500.00)
Fr. 122 $10 1901
A beautiful Bison that faces up a few grades higher. Graded 'Apparent' for a small edge tear at top right. While we don't doubt PCGS, the tear must truly be small as we are unable to locate it through the holder.
Grade: PCGS VF 30 Apparent
Lot #1220 - Large Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 850.00 - $ 1,250.00)

Lot #1223 - Large Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 600.00 - $ 800.00)

Lot #1224 - Large Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 12,500.00 - $ 20,000.00)
Fr. 123 $10 1923
Poker Chip 1923 $10 Legal Tender notes are in strong demand and we rarely have one, but with the Diamond Bar Collection being sold we actually have some doubles. This is a great double - graded 64 EPQ by PMG. The note has a great overall appearance with bold reds and exceptional paper quality. Margins such as this have often been called Gem. From the last 100 printed.
Grade: PMG Ch. UNC 64 EPQ
Lot #1225 - Large Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 5,000.00 - $ 7,500.00)
Fr. 123 $10 1923
Here is a great find that is sure to create plenty of interest. A $10 Poker Chip PMG XF 40 EPQ. These notes are scarce and most of this issue is either low grade or CU. Very few nice circs still exist. Some lucky collector will go home happy with this note.
Grade: PMG XF 40 EPQ
Lot #1226 - Large Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 8,000.00 - $ 10,000.00)
Fr. 126b $20 1863
A great example of this early $20 Legal Tender that almost undoubtedly came from the original old-time hoard of $10s and $20s. This note is graded 'Apparent' due to 'edge restoration' which refers to several closed nicks, etc. along the top and bottom margins. This was typical of these notes before restoration years ago. The fact is that the overall quality is amazing with lovely paper quality, brilliant colors and even exceptional centering. I would expect this to represent excellent value.
Grade: PCGS Apparent Very Ch. New 64
Lot #1227 - Large Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 2,750.00 - $ 4,750.00)
Fr. 126b $20 1863
A wholesome specimen of the first circulating $20. PMG comments 'margin nick' entirely confined to unprinted border and totally consistent with the grade. The comment 'splits' is meaningless, as they cannot be located. The margins are enormous for the issue, the inks remain deep and this would be equally at home in a Fine 12 holder, the grade that most would assign.
Grade: PMG VG 10
Lot #1228 - Large Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 500.00 - $ 750.00)
Fr. 144 $20 1880
A well centered example of this 1880 $20 with the Vernon-Treat signatures. Bold and fresh ink along with decent paper quality for the grade.

A great looking $1 Black Eagle with the courtesy autograph of J.W. Whelsley, Assistant U.S. Treasurer, 1890-1893. This is a tough one to find. The last one I had was a cut sheet, I believe in Deuces, years ago.

Solid #4 serial number on a Black Eagle is a desirable and rare item, but the fact that the paper is brittle cannot be reversed. This note would be $10,000 or more if problem free but such is not the case. It absolutely CANNOT be removed from its current holder. Selling AS IS - WHERE IS - NO RETURNS.

A neat serial #N2000000 on this popular $2 Silver Certificate type of 1899. Occasionally we see some low numbers but very rarely do we find where higher numbers were saved.
Grade: PMG Abt. UNC 55
Lot #1250 - Large Size Type Notes > Silver Certificates - ($ 14,000.00 - $ 18,000.00)
Fr. 263 $5 1886
A wonderful brown seal Silver Dollar Back that has bright white paper, beautiful inking and very nice centering. More often than not this large brown seal comes Choice rather than Gem, and when I see 40 consecutives at once there was generally a softer corner or such that kept them from Gem. This type is as popular as you will get and demand for quality like this is serious. A great time to pick a up Silver Dollar Back.
Grade: PCGS Very Ch. New 64 PPQ
Lot #1251 - Large Size Type Notes > Silver Certificates - ($ 11,000.00 - $ 15,000.00)
Fr. 268 $5 1896
Here is a lovely example of the earliest signature combination of the $5 Educational. Even though the design caused problems for the conservatives in Boston I am thankful its art and beauty survived. This example has wide, even margins that are outstanding. Brilliant color that is wonderful and gorgeous paper quality, even though no PPQ designation which was probably due to a closed pinhole at the lower left.
Grade: PCGS Very Ch. New 64
Lot #1252 - Large Size Type Notes > Silver Certificates - ($ 3,000.00 - $ 4,000.00)
Fr. 268 $5 1896
Fresh out of the weeds. This wholly original note surfaced at the close of CANS leaving no opportunity to have it slabbed. The exact type of quality that has been called XF for two decades, until the advent of third-party grading where it might receive a VF 35 grade rather than the XF assessment. If eye-appeal is more important than a technical grade, this note is for you.
Grade: VF/XF
Lot #1253 - Large Size Type Notes > Silver Certificates - ($ 3,000.00 - $ 4,000.00)
Fr. 270 $5 1896
Great centering enhances the overall appeal of this popular $5 Educational that has a bold appearance and great color. Always sought after by collectors.
Grade: PMG VF 30
Lot #1254 - Large Size Type Notes > Silver Certificates - ($ 1,500.00 - $ 2,000.00)
Fr. 271 $5 1899
A high quality circulated example of the earliest of all Indian Chief notes. This note has the Lyons-Roberts signatures and the earliest serial number application for the series. It's very attractive with broad margins and bold printing. It definitely has the appearance of a higher grade while technically the grade appears to be correct.
Grade: PCGS XF 45
Lot #1255 - Large Size Type Notes > Silver Certificates - ($ 1,250.00 - $ 1,750.00)
Fr. 271 $5 1899
Many CUs don't possess the pizzazz of this example with bold blues, spot-on centering and nary a fold visible through the holder. Truly a premium example.
Grade: PCGS XF 40
Lot #1256 - Large Size Type Notes > Silver Certificates - ($ 6,500.00 - $ 9,000.00)
Fr. 280 $5 1899
Here's a Chief note that is sure to please collectors of all ages. Rarely do we get the opportunity to see such wonderful centering for this issue as the design is without a defined uniform border. If you want a note with pure white paper that has bright, fresh inking along with amazing centering originality, then this one is for you. To me it says, "Hail to the Chief".
Grade: PCGS Gem New 66 PPQ
Lot #1257 - Large Size Type Notes > Silver Certificates - ($ 2,000.00 - $ 3,000.00)
Fr. 280 $5 1899
We're careful not to encourage 'crack-outs' for reconsideration and possible upgrade, but this piece certainly needs to be considered. The paper wave is readily apparent, the embossing jumps out and the inks are bold. In the holder, this note appears to be Ch. UNC 63 EPQ. A monster example of a perennially popular type. Worth multiples of what the holder suggests.
Grade: PMG Ch. XF 45 EPQ
Lot #1258 - Large Size Type Notes > Silver Certificates - ($ 2,750.00 - $ 3,500.00)
Fr. 282 $5 1923
High quality Porthole notes that are not UNC are few and far between. This is a wonderful note and it's tough to figure out what the circulation is. A fresh PPQ AU with decent centering and excellent color.
Grade: PCGS Abt. New 50 PPQ
Lot #1259 - Large Size Type Notes > Silver Certificates - ($ 5,000.00 - $ 7,000.00)
Fr. 288 $10 1880
It's very seldom that you will find a circulated example of this black back Silver Certificate with this great color and centering. PCGS has called this note Apparent for minor edge restoration but even that gentle language seems tough to me. It's a note that has excellent color and body but somewhat mishandled. This note was in need of closing minor splits to keep them from getting worse. Only under magnification can I see where anything was done. Visually, a super note for the issue.
Grade: PCGS VF 30 Apparent
Lot #1260 - Large Size Type Notes > Silver Certificates - ($ 800.00 - $ 1,200.00)

A rare opportunity to acquire this difficult Diamond Back $20 in a condition that doesn't break the bank. It's generally evenly circulated but I can see several small splits.

Lot #1262 - Large Size Type Notes > Silver Certificates - ($ 20,000.00 - $ 30,000.00)
Fr. 321 $20 1891
Here is a lovely example of the last variety of the Daniel Manning $20 Silver Certificate. The seal is small blue scalloped which is on the right and the left side is balanced by the double "XX" Roman numeral. The bright white paper and originality, along with the bold black, blue and green inks which are laid on the paper with perfection, make for a beautiful note. Such quality is rarely exceeded (yet the Diamond Bar example is actually a higher grade).
Grade: PMG Gem UNC 65 EPQ
Lot #1263 - Large Size Type Notes > Silver Certificates - ($ 7,000.00 - $ 12,000.00)
Fr. 321* $20 1891 # *311B
A star note from the Daniel Manning 1891 $20 Silver Certificate series is a rare item as there are only a total of six examples known, with this being the lowest serial number reported. Less impressive is that this note is a lower grade VG 10 but it's been off the market for nearly 20 years. It was last sold by Stack's in September 1992 at $1,800. Track & Price does not show any offerings in 10 years. These are definitely rare.
Grade: PCGS VG 10
Lot #1264 - Large Size Type Notes > Treasury Notes - ($ 3,000.00 - $ 6,000.00)
Fr. 347 $1 1890 #A125
This is a lovely, low serial #A125 ornate back large brown seal Treasury Note with the Rosecrans-Huston signature combination. This has been graded Ch. UNC 64 by PMG and they note that there is a closed split in the right margin. The note appeared in both Lyn Knight Currency Auctions and CAA sales in 1996 and 1997. Excellent original color and centering as expected. Few of these low numbers exist so this is quite an opportunity to acquire such a quality note.
Grade: PMG Ch. UNC 64
Lot #1265 - Large Size Type Notes > Treasury Notes - ($ 2,000.00 - $ 3,000.00)
Fr. 347 $1 1890 #A105
This is the sixth lowest serial number known for this type and it's the ornate back design which is always in demand. Someone must have saved this note and folded it in the process as the paper shows virtually no wear, just folds.
Grade: PCGS XF 40
Lot #1266 - Large Size Type Notes > Treasury Notes - ($ 1,800.00 - $ 2,400.00)
Fr. 349 $1 1890
I've always found high grade circulated examples of this Ornate Back issue to be hard to locate. This note has the small red seal and is quite lovely overall. Excellent color and even better centering add to the mix. I expect significant interest in this design.
Grade: PCGS XF 45

Lot #1268 - Large Size Type Notes > Treasury Notes - ($ 300.00 - $ 400.00)

Lot #1270 - Large Size Type Notes > Treasury Notes - ($ 1,500.00 - $ 2,000.00)
Fr. 363 $5 1891

Lot #1272 - Large Size Type Notes > Treasury Notes - ($ 7,000.00 - $ 9,000.00)
Fr. 369 $10 1891
The Treasury Note series is a beautiful series of designs and this note shows Philip H. Sheridan, Commander of the Army in 1884, as the central vignette. A very impressive, high quality Type Note that has wonderful margins and lovely, bright white paper with exceptional color as well. A very difficult note to ever think of finding a better one.

Lot #1273 - Large Size Type Notes > Treasury Notes - ($ 4,500.00 - $ 5,500.00)
Fr. 369 $10 1891
A nice uncirculated 1891 $10 Sheridan with the open back design and Rosecrans-Nebeker signatures. Part of an old-time collection that remains ungraded, while probably a mistake. This note has nice paper quality with strong embossing. It's also very nicely centered and problem free.

Lot #1274 - Large Size Type Notes > Treasury Notes - ($ 2,500.00 - $ 3,500.00)
Fr. 370 $10 1891
This is a lovely example of a tougher signature combination. This note certainly has the appearance of an UNC in the holder and the grade of 58 PPQ indicates excellent paper quality as well. There was a group of these that came out within the last 10 years but they were mostly new and very high priced. This is a lovely note at your price.

Lot #1275 - Large Size Type Notes > Federal Reserve Bank Notes - ($ 3,500.00 - $ 4,500.00)
Fr. 757 $2 1918 Cleveland #D403A
A wise senior currency dealer once told me, "I've always made money on Battleships. They are popular and in demand." There is no doubt this type ranks near the top of all U.S. paper money images. This is a fresh, well centered note with excellent paper quality. The lower serial #D403A can only create more interest.

Fr. 785 $5 1918 Cleveland #D8A
These $5 Cleveland FRBNs are known to come with low serial numbers but there are only three single-digits in the census. The #9 is impounded at the Smithsonian and the other is serial #1. This #8 is the third note.

Star notes from this $5 Federal Reserve Bank are few and far between. This is only the third example reported on the district. Auction records indicate sales in 1992 and 1994 so it's tough to get and it's been a while since the last offering. This is one of the most difficult types to get a star note from.

A beautiful example of a $10 FRBN from Kansas City. While we have a couple of Gem UNCs, it's rarer still to find a gorgeous Ch. Abt. New 58 PPQ (PCGS). This appears to be the same serial number range as the UNCs so there must be some slight handling issue.

This note is beautiful and rare. It appears to be the finest star note graded at this time, and there are 90 stars reported. There is a PCGS 63 reported but none have appeared since 2007. Nice white, bright, fresh paper with excellent centering as well.

Here is a rare Philadelphia star that is new to the five stars previously known. This is the second finest known but it looks like an even higher grade than is shown. Wonderful paper quality and very light circulation can be seen. We sold a PCGS 45 at $2,990 in June 2008.

Here is a new addition to the census of this RARE $50 Red Seal Kansas City. The census shows only five notes reported but this example is new to that number and is a much higher serial #J7385A. The only recent sale was in the "perfect storm" Tom Flynn Collection auction where unattainable prices were common place and a PMG VG 8 realized $17,250. Once again, the market will determine the price when this evenly circulated note sells. There were two XFs that sold some 20 years ago.

This Kansas City $50 Red Seal is the "b" variety. The census previously listed four notes reported, and now we have five. We sold a PMG VG 8 in June 2009 for $9,200 and that was in a weaker market. This is the new high serial number for this issue. The note has good color but plenty of old-fashioned circulation, yet it remains problem free. The finest known is a VF 20 and there are also two in Fine 12 and one in VG 8. Here is a rare opportunity to acquire it.

By this time just about everyone knows my story about this note. Here we have a beauty from the old-time hoard. A PMG 66 realized $6,900 in January 2011, that's nearly 50% more than the same quality was bringing a couple of years ago.

If a Philly $1,000 that looks Gem is out of your budget then this sharp, evenly circulated New York might just fill the bill. This note has the Burke-Glass signatures along with even margins and decent color. There are only 28 serial numbers recorded but only eight, possibly higher grade, are showing up. There has not been another offered since July 2007 when a VF 20 brought $18,400. A year earlier I sold a VF at $19,550. From all indications these are higher now.

This jewel, a very rare 1907 Gold Certificate star, is one of only four known star notes with this signature combination. There is an AU, two like this one and one in much lower grade. The other VF 30 realized $8,050 in January 2009. Today, in a much better market, I expect somewhat better results. Both others have not been offered since the early 1990s.

A lovely, high grade Department of 1882 note. The census shows 48 reported examples and this note is included in that report, although it is shown without a grade. There are only three notes TPG higher - '66', '55', '50'. This may well be the finest example graded XF by either service. Records indicate a PMG 35 realized $6,038 in June 2008 and we sold a PMG 58 for $26,450 in June 2007. Several ungraded notes have also sold. This note has great color and impressive centering. On large size Bristolboard (impressed crown in circle). The bond proper frame is red India paper elements. The texts are drawn in black. The top central vignette is a sepia Salmon P. Chase as used on the $500. The counters are red. The two lower corners are sepia photos, mounted on board, similar to those used on the Interest Bearing essays. No coupons are drawn, only the other coupons are lined and divided in pencil." There is a heavy horizontal fold in the center of the coupon area, causing splitting on each end.

MA-289 $16 1781
This is the issue with the handwritten dates. Until a few years ago this denomination was unknown until a small group of them were unearthed in the Southwest. In 2004 three of them brought about $7,000 each but prices have waned somewhat since then. This note has great originality and eye appeal and should fit as a popular type into someone's Colonial collection. In our last sale we sold a VF for $690.

Lot #1330 - Colonial Currency > North Carolina - ($ 750.00 - $ 1,250.00)
NC-68 30s April 4, 1748
This is one of the nicest examples of this issue that we have ever seen. The Winged Stirrup vignette and four signatures are boldly printed. A nearly full left indent also remains and while there are a couple of repaired splits and tears no major pieces have been replaced and there is no reconstruction of any sort. For all the sloppy examples that are out there from the hoard this is clearly one of the nicest extant and the pursuit of this piece should not be taken lightly.

Lot #1331 - Colonial Currency > North Carolina - ($ 750.00 - $ 1,250.00)
NC-69 40s April 4, 1748
Another condition census piece with stunning print quality and excellent signatures. There are a slew of the typical period endorsements on the back and most of the indent at the left remains unscathed. It should also be noted that the serial #1000 only adds to the allure of this note. This note, and the 30 Shillings from this issue that we have for sale, are likely two of the nicest examples that you will ever find from this 1748 issue.

Lot #1332 - Colonial Currency > North Carolina - ($ 550.00 - $ 850.00)
NC-80 26s8d March 9, 1754
This is an always popular note due to the Holy Bible vignette. There are some edge and internal splits but it should be noted that they do little to detract from the aesthetic appeal of this note. As bright as these come with great technical merit for this issue. A real winner sure to land in one lucky collector's hands.

Lot #1333 - Colonial Currency > North Carolina - ($ 750.00 - $ 1,250.00)
NC-81 30s March 9, 1754
This is legitimately the most attractive example of this 1754 issue that we can recall having seen in years. The note is entirely intact with a broad left indent, decent signatures and good print quality. The previous sentence description applies to less than 1% of the surviving notes from this issue and while PCGS notes there are a couple of edge splits and tears you can basically throw that out the window if you covet this piece.

Lot #1401 - Obsolete Notes & Miscellaneous Items > Louisiana - ($ 2,000.00 - $ 4,000.00)
Louisiana Lottery Ticket Collection
Here is a wonderful collection of Louisiana Lottery Tickets. The Louisiana State Lottery Company was chartered on August 11, 1868 by the Louisiana General Assembly giving a 25 year charter, with an even exchange giving the state $40,000 per year. A bad reputation was almost immediately given to the company because of the payments to state. John A. Morris was the controlling partner and Charles T. Howard was the figurehead. Former Confederate Generals P.G.T. Beauregard and Jubal Anderson Early held the drawings and were paid. In 1890, three years before the charter's expiration, the company convinced the Louisiana legislature to continue the charter for a fee of $500,000 per year. The voters were persuaded by the Anti-Lottery League to vote it down but the legislature passed the issue. In 1892 the U.S. Congress passed a law banning interstate transportation of lottery tickets, effectively killing the business as 90% of the tickets crossed state lines. This collection includes 105 tickets, beginning in 1878 and ending in 1894, as well as a colorful lottery information sheet, an early New Orleans trade card for lottery and a list of winners. These are multi-colored and some are designated as Louisiana Lottery Company, Kansas City, Kansas or Little Rock, Arkansas. A beautiful collection offered in one lot. Information lists this as the Lewis B. Beatty Collection and dates to prior 1960.

The answer was a state loan for five years at five percent. The banks that loaned the state money could issue notes called 'Relief Notes' in the denominations of $1, $2 and $5. This note, with minor flaws, is one of these notes.

T-1 $1,000 1861 Montgomery
Here is a beautiful $1,000 Montgomery that was issued June 17, 1861. It was later received in Savannah, Georgia. The paper is very high quality but it's been cancelled with six punch holes. Because one of the cancels has a minor tear the note has been graded Apparent XF 40. Only 607 notes were issued and this is #381. Signed by Alex B. Clintheralt and E.C. Elmore. Just a few were signed by C.T. Jones.
Grade: PCGS XF 40 Apparent
Lot #1470 - Confederate Items - ($ 25,000.00 - $ 30,000.00)
T-2 $500 1861 Montgomery
This is the $500 Montgomery and it's magnificent, but like so many of the 607 issued this was cut-out cancelled with six small circles that are hard to even notice when the quality of this note is so pristine. This note was presented for payment in Savannah in 1868 when $21.25 interest was waived. Truly a beauty.

We have a neat little group of these with writing on the back that indicates that a Major W.J. Anderson issued this in Memphis, Tennessee, September 13, 1861. It matches the T-5 - what a great pair of notes to have 150 years later!

Lot #1474 - Confederate Items - ($ 2,250.00 - $ 4,250.00)
T-5 $100 Richmond
Here is a beautiful, fresh example of the 1861 $100 Richmond that has a central vignette of a railroad, with Justice at the left and Minerva on the right. The quality is as good as when it was made with bright, fresh colors and close margins, that are normal for the issue. This note has, "Distributed, Sept. 22, 1861, Ferdinand Hobby, Capt." on the back. I have seen recent prices in excess of $5,000 for this note.

T-5 $100 Richmond
Another lovely T-5 with great color but a couple of minor edge nicks that have caused this to be graded Apparent Ch. AU 58. Interestingly this has the September 13, 1861 date but it matches the $50. On the back is written, "issued by me. Major W.J. Anderson, Memphis, TN." PCGS notes "small edge tears at top left of center" and they seem very minor.

Lot #1478 - Confederate Items - ($ 1,500.00 - $ 3,000.00)
T-5 $100 Richmond
May 29, 1861. Issued from the new Confederate capital of Richmond, the central design of this note features a steam train rounding a bend, flanked by the standing figures of Justice and Minerva at the left and right respectively. Signed by Robert Tyler as Register and E.C. Elmore as Treasurer. A dark green overprint featuring the denomination appears at the center, neatly framing the principal vignette. Only 5,798 notes of this type were issued. A few stains and mottled surfaces, particularly visible on the blank verso.

T-6 $50 Richmond
This is a lovely UNC 1861 Richmond $50 with Pallas and Ceres sitting on a bale of cotton with Justice holding the scales of Justice at the left and George Washington at the right. On the back it says, "Issued by me, Sept. 1, 1861, Major W.J. Anderson - Memphis, TN". A lovely, true UNC note with complete originality, bright, fresh colors and the margins are consistent with the series. I have recently seen this type for sale at $5,000.

T-7 $100 Richmond
July 25, 1861. "For" is handwritten at lower right. Except for some tightness at the left a rather well margined example of this desirable early Confederate type. Evenly circulated with bold signatures and excellent print quality. A solid four-figure item once it reaches the VF grade.

Lot #1482 - Confederate Items - ($ 2,500.00 - $ 5,000.00)
T-12 $5 Richmond
July 25, 1861. The first Confederate note with a back design. Simplistic design printed by Jules Manouvrier of New Orleans. Back printing executed in light blue ink with 'Confederate States of America' at the center and denomination, expressed in Roman numbers at the corners. Due to the simplicity of the design, Manouvrier's work was not well received by the Confederate authorities and he was not given any further contracts. One of the rarer Confederate notes as only 15,556 pieces were issued during the war. Some soiling present, with several stains visible.

Lot #1483 - Confederate Items - ($ 2,500.00 - $ 5,000.00)
T-15 $50 Richmond
This is the rare and popular railroad train vignette with Justice at the right and Ceres on the left. This note was printed by the Southern Banknote Company and it was beautifully engraved. Only 14,860 notes were issued. There were two cut-out cancels that have been expertly restored. They were located on the bottom edge and are very difficult to detect.

T-17 $20 September 2, 1861
T-17 $20 Richmond
September 2, 1861. For the grade this is one of the nicest examples we can ever recall having seen in recent memory. While T-17 notes are often seen in the F/VF grade range they don't usually have color this bright and with no problems whatsoever. The allure of this piece is that it is fully framed on all sides, with a majority of these notes being found poorly cut. A real treasure for the ultimate circulated type set that factors eye appeal over mere technical grade.
Grade: VF +
Lot #1485 - Confederate Items - ($ 750.00 - $ 1,500.00)
T-17 $20 Richmond
September 2, 1861. The central vignette of this colorful note depicts three seated female figures representing Ceres, the Roman goddess of Agriculture, between Commerce and Navigation. A standing figure of Liberty dominates the entire left end of the note, with the right side featuring the denomination expressed in Roman and Arabic numerals. A bright green overprint, used as an anti-counterfeiting device, dominates the center of the note. There is a tiny piece out of the lower left bottom.

Lot #1486 - Confederate Items - ($ 1,500.00 - $ 2,500.00)
T-19 $20 Richmond
This is the red and black note with the Navigation as the central vignette and a blacksmith at the right. This $20 has excellent color but it was a cut-out cancel with two partial circles restored along the bottom. While careful inspection does reveal them, they are very well done. This was printed by the Southern Banknote Company and just 14,860 were issued.
Grade: F/VF
Lot #1487 - Confederate Items - ($ 550.00 - $ 850.00)
T-21 $20 Richmond
September 2, 1861. This is a moderately circulated example of this more desirable type. Bright and colorful with excellent eye appeal and a couple of small patches of foxing, which is very typical for this type. In terms of eye appeal you are not likely to find anything that looks much better without taking a huge leap in price.

September 2, 1861. The central vignette of this multicolor note features a portrait of Alexander H. Stephens, Vice President of the Confederacy, presented in an oval atop a scene of agricultural and commerce products. The denomination; represented in Roman numerals, flank the central design, with the ends of the note also presenting the denomination, all accomplished in bluish-green ink. Two 'X' cancellations are present between the portrait and denomination.

T-22 $10 Richmond
September 2, 1861. Great color and originality is seen on this scarcer Confederate Type Note that has well earned the coveted PPQ designation from PCGS. While the right margin is a little tight the other three margins are simply enormous. An evenly circulated example that should find its way into a wonderful type set. We have several circulated confederate notes in this sale with exceptional eye appeal for the grade.

Lot #1490 - Confederate Items - ($ 400.00 - $ 600.00)
T-22 $10 Richmond
September 2, 1861. Printed by the Southern Bank Note Company of New Orleans. The central vignette depicts a Native American family flanked by the denomination expressed in Roman numerals. Vignettes of Thetis and a standing female dressed in native attire dominate the upper left and right corners respectively, with the denomination printed beneath each. A bright orange overprint, echoing the denomination, appears at the center as an anti-counterfeiting device. Some soiling present and cut tight at the upper left. Several small holes are present, the largest above the vignette of Thetis.

T-24 $10 Richmond
September 2, 1861. Wow. That is what we said when we saw this note. This is one of the most eye-appealing, bright and colorful T-24 notes that we can recall, having exceptional margins as well. A deeply embossed example that is as bright as the day it was printed with perhaps a couple corner folds too many for the full XF grade. For a type that is typically found in the VG to Fine + grade range this example is a breath of fresh air, and much like the T-17 listed here, a superlative candidate for one's ultimate circulated type set.

September 2, 1861. Blacksmith and boy vignette. I have always found this type extremely difficult to find with excellent color, body and problem free. Here we have just that in this desirable note. Because the grade of VF has become so all encompassing, and this note came in at the last minute, I could not send it in for grading. I believe it's likely a VF 25, but maybe a VF 20. It has a great appearance and is problem free.

Here is a group of correspondence that came from the Thomas Morris estate through Frank Levitan. W.W. Baldwin. There is a letter that includes a four piece design, possibly for stamps or revenues and how Mr. Scott screwed up something in his catalog. These designs are very interesting and he refers to 1883 issue, either stamps or revenue. Also enclosed is a copy of the Metropolitan Philatelic, crossing out errors. A letter from Lyman Fisk lamenting working as a modeler but that he has aspirations and is assisting Baldwin does as well. (They would be proud that someone remembers their efforts). Another letter is to Tom Morris from Edwin Glazer about his father. Some interesting information for those with the aptitude for such reading.

Lot #1507 - Vignettes - ($ 1,000.00 - $ 2,000.00)
Vignette Scrapbook
Here is a scrapbook of vignettes to be used by a group, Edmonds, Jones & Smillie of New York. A letter is part of this archive as well as a sample sheet, by Continental Bank Note Company, with the bottom left vignette gone. There appears to be nearly 200 items of vignettes that a vary greatly that I consider interesting, and about 62 more of men. If you like these things it's a very interesting lot. All items are approximate and sold AS IS. There are several large vignettes of the back of the $20 First Charter and baptism of Pocahontas, as well as the $50 First Charter with the embarkation of the Pilgrims. Lot also includes several proofs of stamps in $1 Hawaii - Akahi - Dolan, 80 Reis Brazil in two different colors, 4 Centavos Argentina, Argentina 10-25-50-75 Centavos, Nova Scotia 2c black and white.
Lot #1508 - Small Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 2,000.00 - $ 4,000.00)
$1 1928 A-A Five Piece Lot
A five piece consecutive lot of $1 Legal Tenders. Face check numbers used in the printing of Fr. 1500 range from #1 to #36. Exceptions reported by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing are #12, #31, #33, #34 and #35. Obviously, face check plate #12 was printed. However very few examples have been reported by collectors. We have discovered five consecutive uncirculated examples. Previously we have known of only one uncirculated example, a Ch. CU note with extremely uneven margins. It appeared in the CAA-Heritage sale of January 8, 2004 where it sold for $977.50 (over six times "bid"). The five notes in this lot grade one in Ch. UNC 63 EPQ, two in Ch. UNC 64 EPQ and two in Gem UNC 65 EPQ.

This is a somewhat deceptively rare note as there are very few auction appearances for this district. Compare this to the Minneapolis note which has a high catalog value and far more auction appearances. Some light folds and tremendous originality are found on this gorgeous piece. This is the type of numbered district note that, although circulated, will likely find its way into an advanced collection.

$5,000 1934 G Chicago #G00001141A
It sure seems to me that the ultra high denominations in U.S. paper money are still in strong demand, with the quality being very important. This lovely note, from the Chicago district, has been graded 62 PPQ. There were 6,600 notes printed from this district for this series. This example has great color, premium paper quality and extra nice centering so there must be a corner issue that doesn't hit the design or some such minor issue to cause the grade. A lovely note.

In terms of eye appeal this one of the prettiest consecutive pairs of Gold Certificates you are likely to encounter. Bright ink colors, fresh looking paper and broad margins. Mismatched serials. The left serial number ends with #506D; the right with #516D. There is rotation to the mismatched digit, so PMG dances a bit by calling it a 'stuck digit error causing mismatched serial number'. Consecutive pair with the same serial number on each of the notes. The first note has the serial in the lower left position, the next note in the upper right. The Gregg Anderson Collection, which we just auctioned at CPMX, despite its enormity, contained nothing comparable. We have offered this type of mistake only once before and that involved a trio of notes, those notes realized nearly $15,000. We certainly believe that this pair is worth a similar prorated amount which would approach five figures. The estimate is intentionally low. Two piece lot.

This spectacular error has one of the most major third print shifts we have ever seen. On top of that, the serial numbers are skewed, adding even more eye appeal. One of the district seals and serials is completely inside the portrait area and you can see large portions of two green seals on the top right and bottom left. Also, on the bottom right margin you can barely see the top of a fourth serial number.

Obstructed print with retained fragment A true R-9 error according to the Relative Rarity Index, introduced by Bart in 1994 and updated twice since then. This miracle of recovery includes not only the host note with the void on top of Lincoln's head, but amazingly, the imprinted foreign object which laid on top of the currency sheet during the printing process. How this scrap didn't fall to the BEP floor to be swept away remains a mystery. A bonanza for one collector seeking to acquire this amazingly rare error variety at an affordable price. Improper ink mixture. Only a couple of these are known in high grade, which dispels any concern about authenticity, clearly a fact the folks at PMG carefully considered before giving this piece their blessing. Because the Gold Certificates were printed contemporaneously with the National Bank Notes and Federal Reserve Bank Notes it appears as though residual brown ink was left in the reservoir holding the overprint ink and an improper mixture occurred blending the intended yellow-gold ink with leftover brown ink. A specialist in small size paper money had one listed on eBay with a starting price of almost $10k,000. The market will determine what tonight's example brings.
