Lot #1444 - Small Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 5,500.00 - $ 7,500.00)
$1 1928 #A00000289A thru #A00000294a
This is the lowest known serial-numbered cut sheet of 1928 $1 red seals. It is a little known fact that after the first 12 sheets were printed the plate position letters of A to L were temporarily changed from the original A to L to plate position letters A to F. The plate position letters subsequently revert back to A to L somewhere in the #A00020000A range. In effect, a small subset of approximately 20,000 notes were printed exclusively with the A to F plate position letters. We can only speculate as to why this production change occurred, but it adds even more mystique to this lowest-known $1 Legal Tender consecutive six-note cut sheet. Regardless of the cause, the new owner will be assured of owning a museum quality group that will impress both collectors and non-collectors alike. These six notes grade as follows: A is Ch. UNC 63 EPQ, B and C are Ch. UNC 64 EPQ, D is Gem UNC 66 EPQ, E and F are Gem UNC 65 EPQ. Six piece lot.

Lot #1445 - Small Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 5,000.00 - $ 7,500.00)
$1 1928 #A00000060A
Here is a truly low #60 from an uncut sheet that was cut apart somewhat recently. As we have known for years, this issue is rare.
Grade: PMG Gem UNC 65 EPQ
Lot #1446 - Small Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 2,500.00 - $ 3,500.00)
$1 1928 #A00001234A
If the reaction by our seasoned staff is any indication, it should come as no surprise that many collectors consider this note to be the ultimate fancy $1 Legal Tender. Wow!
Grade: PCGS Ch. New 63 PPQ
Lot #1447 - Small Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 2,250.00 - $ 2,500.00)
$1 1928 LT & SC #A00001040A
Offered here is a rare example of a perfectly matched (serial number and block) 1928 $1 Legal Tender and 1928 $1 Silver Certificate. Except for the matching A#00005000A Legal Tender and Silver Certificate pair, this is the only other matching pair we are aware of. The "1040" serial number makes this the perfect set for your tax advisor, accountant, or financial planner. As a professional they are intimately familiar with the classic IRS Tax Form 1040 and would likely find much pleasure in showcasing to clients this beautifully matched pair. The Legal is graded Gem New 65 PPQ and the Silver is Abt. New 50 PPQ. Two piece lot.
Grade: PCGS Graded
Lot #1448 - Small Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 2,000.00 - $ 4,000.00)
$1 1928 #A00000729A
As listed on the holder, this note is from the famed Levitan Collection. Considered one of the finest collections of American currency ever assembled, we were privileged to have auctioned this collection in 1998. Known for his discerning eye, Mr. Levitan focused on acquiring what he considered the finest and rarest notes. As you can see, this note is certainly representative of his collecting requirements and acumen. It's fair to say if Mr. Levitan were able to acquire a finer example of a 1928 $1 Legal Tender, we'd be looking at it now.
Grade: PCGS Superb Gem New 67 PPQ
Lot #1449 - Small Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 2,000.00 - $ 4,000.00)
$1 1928 #A01200000A
This note is merely a freak of nature...period. With the humidity in Puerto Rico destroying many of these notes, so very few fancies above #5000 exist. And lest we forget, the highest serial number is #A01872012A. Thus the possibility of any eight-digit fancies is severely limited since they must begin with a zero. Census records indicate that no 1928 $1 Legal Tender radars exist and ,except for the note that follows, finding the full 0-7 up ladder is probably as likely as finding the Loch Ness monster. This is the only known example of a 1928 $1 LT with five trailing zeros and a note that cannot be duplicated regardless of how much money one is prepared to spend.
Grade: PCGS VF 30
Lot #1450 - Small Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 1,100.00 - $ 2,100.00)
$1 1928 #A00000543A
This 1928 $1 red seal combines a very low three-digit ladder serial number with a PMG 66 EPQ grade. The down-ladder serial number enhances this high-grade Gem.
Grade: PMG Gem UNC 66 EPQ
Lot #1451 - Small Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 1,000.00 - $ 1,500.00)
$1 1928 #A00000145A & A00000146A
Another remarkable example of survival, this pair of notes is the lowest known consecutive pair of $1 red seals issued for commerce. Please take note of the almost identical grades that add significant appeal to this unique and eye-catching pair. It's extremely unlikely another comparable pair this low will ever surface. The serial #145 is graded Fine 15 and #146 is VF 25. Two piece lot.
Grade: PCGS Graded
Lot #1452 - Small Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 850.00 - $ 1,250.00)
$1 1928 #A00000127A
The first 120 notes and the last 12 notes of the 1928 $1 Legal Tenders were issued in uncut sheets for distribution to dignitaries and influential collectors. Notes released for circulation begin with note #A00000121A. This note holds the unique distinction of being the earliest known non-sheet $1 Legal Tender.
Grade: PCGS Fine 15
Lot #1453 - Small Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 850.00 - $ 1,250.00)
$1 1928 A00000735A
Recently Legal Aces have been coming out of the woodwork like cockroaches with even plenty of four digit examples available. With that said, three digit serial number notes are still much scarcer and don't appear very often on the auction circuit.
Grade: PMG Choice Uncirculated 64 EPQ
Lot #1454 - Small Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 750.00 - $ 1,500.00)
$1 1928 #A00000175A
One of the lowest known non-sheet uncirculated 1928 $1 red seals. This note possesses excellent original paper quality.
Grade: PCGS Ch. New 63 PPQ
Lot #1455 - Small Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 600.00 - $ 1,200.00)
$1 1928 #A01234587A
Another one in a million note, this is the closest known $1 Legal Tender full up ladder. This is another example of the determined effort by Mr. Rose over the past 15 years to acquire the finest and rarest fancy $1 Legal Tenders. If you desire the perfect companion to the #A00001234A, look no further
Grade: PCGS VG 08
Lot #1456 - Small Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 525.00 - $ 825.00)
$1 1928 #A00006765A
Serial numbers above #A00005000A were released in Puerto Rico and went directly into circulation. A large percentage of these notes show considerable wear due to long periods of circulation combined with the extremely humid conditions. As such, well-preserved low four-digit notes that were released in Puerto Rico are very scarce. Offered here is one of the very few, as well as one of the very finest examples known. It could take literally years of searching before possibly finding another example this nice.
Grade: PCGS VF 25 PPQ
Lot #1457 - Small Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 525.00 - $ 825.00)
$1 1928 #A00061216A & #A00021612A
Mirror image fancy mini-radars are another example of rarely, if ever seen, seen $1 Legal Tender pairs. For those looking to assemble the finest small-size red seal collection, here is another elusive find. The seiral #21612 is graded Fine 15 PPQ and #61216 is VF 35. Two piece lot.
Grade: PCGS Graded
Lot #1458 - Small Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)

Grade: PCGS Gem New 65 PPQ
Lot #1459 - Small Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 425.00 - $ 575.00)
$1 1928 A00002732A
A lovely example of this one year type for the denomination. Radiant ink colors and excellent embossing attest to the originality of this piece. Low serial #A00002732A only serves to augment the value of this already desirable piece.
Grade: PCGS Choice New 63 PPQ
Lot #1460 - Small Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 300.00 - $ 600.00)
$1 1928 #A01871287A
This note is the highest known non-sheet serial number released for circulation. It is the perfect companion to the lowest known example, #A00000127A, also listed here. PCGS notes paperclip rust stain.
Grade: PCGS Good 6 Apparent
Lot #1461 - Small Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 300.00 - $ 600.00)

$1 1928 #A00009733A
Another example of a low four-digit Puerto Rico released note. This example will appeal to the specialist and those who enjoy collecting the hidden (in plain view) rarities.
Grade: PCGS VG 10
Lot #1463 - Small Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 275.00 - $ 375.00)
$1 1928 A-A
A gorgeous Legal Tender Ace that looks every bit Ch. CU through the holder but for a light diagonal fold.
Grade: PCGS Choice About New 58 PPQ
Lot #1464 - Small Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 275.00 - $ 435.00)
$2 1928-C B-A
A wonderfully embossed and crackling fresh example of this early Legal Tender series that has been blessed with superb color. Green Sheet ask in Superb Gem 67 is $400 and this note falls just short of that mark in terms of quality.
Grade: PMG Gem Uncirculated 66 EPQ
Lot #1465 - Small Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 2,000.00 - $ 4,000.00)
$2 1928 #A12666621A
This gorgeous note is quite special beyond its jaw-dropping good looks. Most significantly, it is the earliest known small-size Legal Tender radar. In the September/October 2007 issue of Paper Money, the Official Journal of the SPMC, R. Logan Talks published an extensive 23-page article entitled, "A study of Radar Serial Numbers in the 1928 to 1963 Era". In the article, Mr. Talks references his census of over 600 notes and provides a breakdown by denomination and series of all known radars and solids from 1928 through 1963. For example, Mr. Talks writes, "The unique issue of $1 1928 USNs had a minuscule printing of only 1,872 million notes and I am not aware of any existing radars for this series. No solid serial numbers are possible because of the small number printed." The article goes on to say that from 1928 to 1966A only 83 eed sseal radars and solids are known across all series and all denominations. From that select group, this note is the one and only radar known from the 1928 $2 Series. The 1928 $2 Series is the earliest of the Legal Tenders as attested to by the signature of H.T. Tate, who was U.S. Treasurer from May 31, 1928 to January 17, 1929. W.O. Woods, whose signature is found on the 1928 $1 and $5 Legal Tenders, followed Tate into office and was Treasurer from January 18, 1929 to May 31, 1933. In effect, even if a 1928 $1 Legal Tender radar were to someday surface, it would never qualify as the earliest known small-size Legal Tender. As such, this note bearing Tate's signature is both the earliest known small-size Legal Tender radar of any series and denomination and, just to add an additional dollop of rarity, the only known 1928 $2 radar. We told you it was special.

Lot #1485 - Small Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
$2 1963-A #A17871787A
A pivotal year in U.S. history, 1787 is when the U.S. Constitution was adopted and sent to the states for ratification. That certainly bears repeating (which this note does extremely well). The $2 red seal repeaters are quite scarce. Only 3,200,000 non-star notes were printed for all of the 1963-A Series and according to Schwartz and Lindquist the serial numbers range from #A15360001A to #A18560000A. With this small population and somewhat odd serial number range, it is amazing that any repeaters from this series exist.
Grade: PMG Gem UNC 65 EPQ
Lot #1486 - Small Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 650.00 - $ 950.00)
$5 1928-A C-A
A wonderful note for type and a very scarce example in this lofty grade. This semi-key issue is most often seen in the Ch. CU grade range but gems, and nearly Superb Gems, are much more difficult to locate. Green Sheet ask is $400 in Gem 65 and $860 in Superb Gem 67. The true market value likely lies somewhere in the middle.

Lot #1487 - Small Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 150.00 - $ 300.00)

Strong red inks are in contrast to bold black print. While the margins and centering dictate the grade, the eye appeal of this piece is certainly better than most "64s" we've seen.

Lot #1488 - Small Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 5,000.00 - $ 10,000.00)
$5 1928-A* # *03069164A

Lot #1489 - Small Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
$5 1928-C F-A
A nearly perfectly centered example of this early Legal $5 that has fire engine red ink colors and embossing that looks as if it were punched through this morning. While certainly available as a Ch. The key to the Legal $5 series and boy is it a beauty. Bright paper, deep color and exceptional print quality all lend credence to the grade. With this note's margin size and centering we are somewhat surprised that it didn't earn an extra point with the service. The sheet in Superb Gem CU is $700 and we would really not be surprised to see this lovely piece approach that mark based on its superior eye appeal.

$1 1928 #A00000590A - A00000593A Uncut Sheet of Four Notes
The Schwartz & Lindquist Guide lists a total of only 15 intact sheets of 1928 $1 Silver Certificates. Included in that group is the #A00000589A to #A000006000A sheet. As evidenced by this partial sheet (#A0000590A to #A00000593A), the number of fully intact sheets is even less than recorded. Rarely offered because a majority of these sheets have been cut into singles. Full and partial sheets of 1928 $1 Silver Certificates are prized by Silver Certificate and sheet collectors alike.

Arguably considered by some to be a legitimate error note, the grade of this super radar is lowered to a CU 61 due to the centering and not the paper quality or sharpness. Either way you look at it, it is nearly an impossible note to duplicate on a 1928 Silver Certificate.
Grade: PCGS New 61 PPQ

Lot #1511 - Small Size Type Notes > Silver Certificates - ($ 750.00 - $ 1,250.00)
$1 1928* *-A
A lovely and early small size Silver Certificate Funny Back star note. The centering just doesn't quite reach Gem standards.

Lot #1512 - Small Size Type Notes > Silver Certificates - ($ 250.00 - $ 500.00)

Grade: AU/CU
Lot #1514 - Small Size Type Notes > Silver Certificates - ($ 425.00 - $ 575.00)
$1 1935-A "S" Experimental S-C
Three huge margins and an adequate fourth are seen on this higher grade "S" experimental note. Recent auction results have shown that these are valued in the market place well beyond the $325 Green Sheet value.

Lot #1518 - Small Size Type Notes > Silver Certificates - ($ 200.00 - $ 300.00)
$5 1934 E-A
While the technical grade on this note appears to be spot on, the aesthetic appeal is well beyond that conveyed by its fold count. Blazing ink colors and mountainous embossing make this much more desirable than a typical so-so VF note. The E-A block is much scarcer and always commands healthy money.
Grade: PCGS Very Fine 35 PPQ
Lot #1519 - Small Size Type Notes > Silver Certificates - ($ 125.00 - $ 250.00)
$5 1934* *-A
Bright white paper and stunning ink colors are seen on this first issue star note that looks like it could have easily reached the full XF grade.
Grade: PCGS Very Fine 35
Lot #1520 - Small Size Type Notes > Silver Certificates - ($ 250.00 - $ 500.00)

Lot #1521 - Small Size Type Notes > Silver Certificates - ($ 15,000.00 - $ 30,000.00)
$5 1934-C #L99999999A
In the fall of 2010, we had the opportunity to sell a solid serial #9s on a $1 Federal Reserve Note. The owner of this note heard of that sale and decided to bring this note to the market. I known solid 9s are few and far between and that the opportunity to acquire this elusive number has diminished greatly with the elimination of printing above #96000000 for any block. We are pleased to offer such an important small size rarity.
Grade: Gem CU
Lot #1522 - Small Size Type Notes > Silver Certificates - ($ 4,500.00 - $ 9,000.00)
$5 1934-C* *-A Narrow
A very important small size find that we can only confirm two, possibly a third in existence. Back plate #1769 and face check #L2031. The last example realized around $6,500 in auction.

Lot #1526 - Small Size Type Notes > Silver Certificates - ($ 150.00 - $ 300.00)
$10 1934 A-A
A bright and colorful example of this early Silver Certificate issue that possesses sublime paper surfaces and deep embossing. If the bottom margin were as broad as the other three we would add several points onto the grade.
Grade: PCGS Very Choice New 64 PPQ
Lot #1527 - Small Size Type Notes > Silver Certificates - ($ 125.00 - $ 250.00)
$10 1934 Mule A-A
Through the holder this lovely early Silver Certificate faces up like a gorgeous Gem. Bright paper, excellent color, huge margins and great centering. PCGS spotted something to account for the grade, but we cannot see any folds through the holder.
Grade: PCGS Choice About New 58 PPQ
Lot #1528 - Small Size Type Notes > Silver Certificates - ($ 175.00 - $ 325.00)

Lot #1529 - Small Size Type Notes > Silver Certificates - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
$10 1953-B A-A
We have seen third party graded Superb Gems that make you scratch your head and wonder...this is not such a piece. If you ever wanted a truly accurately graded, or perhaps even a touch under graded, type note then you need look no further. Hulking margins, near perfect centering and paper surfaces that are flawless in every sense of the word make this one of the nicest examples of this final Silver issue that we can recall having handled.

Lot #1530 - Small Size Type Notes > Federal Reserve Bank Notes - ($ 750.00 - $ 1,500.00)
$5 1929 A Boston #A00000008A
This is quite a find, a single-digit #8 serial number from Boston. We had the Boston #1 years ago. This is a tough note to evaluate.
Grade: XF
Lot #1531 - Small Size Type Notes > Federal Reserve Bank Notes - ($ 750.00 - $ 1,500.00)
$5 1929 A Boston #A00000051A
A nice quality, low serial #51 from Boston. It's graded Gem UNC 65 by CGA and it looks nice enough, but the bottom margin doesn't necessarily seem Gem. It does seem very nice with embossing visible.
Grade: CGA Gem UNC 65
Lot #1532 - Small Size Type Notes > Federal Reserve Bank Notes - ($ 200.00 - $ 400.00)

Lot #1533 - Small Size Type Notes > Federal Reserve Bank Notes - ($ 2,500.00 - $ 5,000.00)
$5 1929 L San Francisco L-A
I have been privileged to sell many wonderful and rare Federal Reserve Bank Notes but this problem free VF is among the nicest of all circ examples I have handled. Only 360,000 were printed and the lowest known serial number is #100, an UNC I handled years ago. Higher quality examples rarely appear.

Lot #1534 - Small Size Type Notes > Federal Reserve Bank Notes - ($ 200.00 - $ 400.00)

Lot #1535 - Small Size Type Notes > Federal Reserve Bank Notes - ($ 175.00 - $ 325.00)

Lot #1536 - Small Size Type Notes > Federal Reserve Bank Notes - ($ 150.00 - $ 250.00)

Grade: Choice CU
Lot #1537 - Small Size Type Notes > Federal Reserve Bank Notes - ($ 200.00 - $ 400.00)
$20 1929 E Richmond E-A
Through the third-party holder this note appears to have the margins and centering closer to the Gem grade. It is wonderfully embossed with great color. Surprisingly a bit of a condition rarity as most examples seen are in the Fine to Very Fine grade range with few nice CU examples out there.
Grade: PCGS New 62 PPQ
Lot #1538 - Small Size Type Notes > Federal Reserve Bank Notes - ($ 1,000.00 - $ 2,000.00)

Grade: F/VF
Lot #1539 - Small Size Type Notes > Federal Reserve Bank Notes - ($ 300.00 - $ 500.00)

Grade: PCGS Gem New 65 PPQ
Lot #1540 - Small Size Type Notes > Federal Reserve Bank Notes - ($ 1,250.00 - $ 1,750.00)
$20 1929 H Saint Louis H-A
A stunning Superb Gem example of this desirable Saint Louis district. Goliath margins and perfect centering are complemented by snow white paper, great color and embossing that one can ice skate around. We can't recall ever having seen such a high grade example of this district but there cannot be too many in existence. The Green Sheet asking price of $600 is laughable for a note of this quality as you will likely never be able to replace it. A collector stares into the abyss and sees nothing; it is there that he finds his character. The successful pursuit of this note will require the utmost character.
Grade: Superb Gem CU
Lot #1541 - Small Size Type Notes > Federal Reserve Bank Notes - ($ 225.00 - $ 375.00)
$20 1929 I Minneapolis I-A
A lovely example of this somewhat more challenging district that has wonderfully original paper and good margins. It certainly appears to have been assessed with a somewhat conservative eye.
Grade: PCGS Choice New 63 PPQ
Lot #1542 - Small Size Type Notes > Federal Reserve Bank Notes - ($ 750.00 - $ 1,250.00)
$20 1929 L San Francisco L-A
If this were a run of the mill FRBN twenty it would be a nice enough example. But for the San Francisco district this is quite an astonishing find. A much scarcer district to be sure but a condition rarity as seen here. Virtually all examples are circulated with an extremely small percentage making the CU grade. In the past we have seen nice Ch. CU notes bring many hundreds of dollars and we would expect the same here.

$100 1934 Light Green Seal G Chicago G-A
An absolutely lovely example of this far scarcer light green seal variety that has great embossing and utter originality. The price guide lists this at $400 in Ch. CU and we tend to agree.

$100 1934 Light Green Seal G Chicago G-A
Consecutive to the other example in this sale and just as desirable. The light green seal is far scarcer and more desirable than its dark green seal cousin. Only a smaller top margin limits the grade assigned to this treasure.

$100 1981 I Minneapolis I-A
This is one of the rarest modern series $100s, as Minneapolis had the lowest printing of this entire series by far, leaving this note on many want lists. This is a totally original, premium example with great embossing and excellent boardwalk margins.
Grade: Superb Gem CU
Lot #1656 - Small Size Type Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 250.00 - $ 400.00)

Pedigreed from the John Whitney Collection auction we held in Chicago, this note is the only example we have ever seen of a #98766789 ladder/radar on a $100. In effect, it is the highest possible ladder/radar on the highest possible modern denomination.

The following pair is a unique cross over type of $100 FRN. It is the highest available serial number for a quad radar combined with the lowest binary quad radar. Surprisingly, these two are separated by $100,000,000 numbers. Two piece lot.

$500 1928 #I00001351A
A very attractive, unmolested example of the scarce 1928 Minneapolis $500 FRN. This issue was miniscule, with only 34,680 regular notes issued. This note is extremely well centered but does have two pinholes from a staple.
Grade: VF +
Lot #1663 - Small Size Type Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 4,500.00 - $ 9,000.00)
$1,000 1934 I Minneapolis I-A
This is a very rare issue with a very short printing. This example is quite lovely and it catalogs at $7,500 in Choice. This note is estimated very conservatively to give every one a chance to acquire this $1,000 rarity.
Grade: PMG Ch. UNC 63 EPQ

$5,000 1934 G Chicago #G00001140A
I have been in business long enough that in 1968 I went to the bank to get cash to pay collector D.J. Levitt for some silver bags and I paid him with a $5,000, not much different than this one. But that was yesterday and yesterday is gone! Now, according to government records, there are around 350 outstanding. This example has a very pleasing overall quality with good size margins all around the image and little more than handling interacting with the paper of this high quality note that has been graded by PMG AU 53, with notations of good embossing and color. The serial is #G00001140A and one of 6,600 printed. I can also add that only 51,480 notes were printed for this issue. The 1928 series had 18,244 notes issued and the 2,652 for later issued are unknown.
Grade: PMG Abt. UNC 53
Lot #1665 - Small Size Type Notes > Hawaii Issue - ($ 275.00 - $ 425.00)
$1 1935-A Hawaii Y-B
An exceptional example from the somewhat scarcer Y-B block. Huge margins, great paper quality and fresh surfaces lend credence to the grade. A lovely note that certainly appears that it might have potential in the eyes of small size collectors.

Lot #1666 - Small Size Type Notes > Hawaii Issue - ($ 175.00 - $ 275.00)

$5 1934* Hawaii L-* Mule
This is a rarity with only a handful known. It's a star mule with back check #1265 and catalogs in VF at $3,500. This note is VF but has a few minor rust spots that really don't bother me much; and they could save you some money.
Grade: VF
Lot #1669 - Small Size Type Notes > Hawaii Issue - ($ 900.00 - $ 1,200.00)
$20 1934-A Hawaii L-A
A very attractive Ch. CU Hawaii note that lists for $1,500 in the Schwartz/Lindquist reference guide. We see embossing through the holder but the bottom margin is a tad narrow for a loftier grade to have been assigned.

A very attractive $500 small size Gold note that has nice centering and a strong gold seal and serial numbers. There are no negative comments mentioned on the PMG holder. The overall appearance is commensurate with the grade. The printing was 420,000, and $500 was a pile of money to put away during this time frame.

It has been some time since I have had such a fresh and lovely, high grade, circulated $1,000 Gold Certificate. This was a short-lived series and only 288,000 examples were ever printed. Although this example does not have the EPQ designation the quality is obvious, with this being as nice a VF as you will find. The centering is quite nice and the color as well. A low serial #5014 is a positive as well.

President Harry Truman & General Omar Bradley
Truman signed as President, as the penned date on the face of the note is June 19, 1945 the date of the air raid attack with extensive firebombing of Shizuoka. Two of the most important Commanders from WWII appear on the back of this note. There are approximately 15 signatures vertically on the front; no doubt, worthy of research as many likely played important roles near the end of the War. Bradley carries considerable value; Truman alone on a $1 Silver sells for $750.

High grade examples of this later New Jersey issue are rarely available with such eye appeal as this. Lightly folded, with stunning print quality and bold signatures as well as some light corner discoloration. For those that aren't familiar with this issue these margins are actually quite acceptable as notes are typically trimmed into the design on multiple borders. Newman lists this at $1,000 in Extremely Fine and $2,000 in UNC which might not be entirely inaccurate in today's Colonial market place.

NY-167 10 Pounds February 16, 1771
While this note has seen some of the tear restorations always encountered on notes from this issue, it is well concealed. The Coat of Arms design has retained all of its detail, the signatures are bold and the paper is crisp and deeply embossed. Since these notes were so crisp they tore and got damaged easily. At least 99% of notes from this issue have multiple problems. A very high grade example in spite of that.

It is in a comment-free holder which, in and of itself, separates it from the other 99% of notes from this issue. Boldly printed, well signed and totally intact with no tears or pieces missing. Do not be shy if you intend on buying this beauty as this opportunity will brush past you like a stranger in a crowd and there won't be any more.

Lot #1946 - Colonial Currency > North Carolina - ($ 450.00 - $ 850.00)
NC-124 20s April 23, 1761
Simply a gorgeous example of a tougher early issue that is so often found in wretched condition. Genuine XF and AU notes like this one with bright paper, mountainous embossing and four bold signatures are rarely seen in the market place. A small pinhole has been filled but is well hidden within the lower border design. Newman lists this at $400 in VF with no higher grade given.

Lot #1947 - Colonial Currency > North Carolina - ($ 200.00 - $ 400.00)
NC-131 20s December 1768
A very high-grade example of this challenging North Carolina issue. PCGS notes an edge split at top center but this is still a far superior example to almost all that are available. This note bears very low serial #95.

Lot #1948 - Colonial Currency > North Carolina - ($ 150.00 - $ 300.00)
NC-133 3 Pounds December 1768
The eye appeal of this piece is sensational. It has great print quality, bold signatures and original paper. There is a single edge split at top center. High grade notes from these pre-1771 issues are few and far between.

Lot #1949 - Colonial Currency > North Carolina - ($ 150.00 - $ 300.00)

A very well signed and bright example of this somewhat more challenging later North Carolina issue. These are rarely seen in this advanced grade. Low serial #26 only increases this note's value.
Grade: XF
Lot #1950 - Colonial Currency > North Carolina - ($ 1,250.00 - $ 1,750.00)
NC-139 1 Pound December 1771
Essentially a perfect example from this North Carolina issue. Behemoth margins, deep embossing and great signatures all attest to the validity of the assigned grade. While it's a lot easier to find a Superb Gem from New Jersey or Rhode Island, it is surprisingly more difficult to do so from this issue since the notes were not broadly spaced top to bottom on the sheet.

Lot #1951 - Colonial Currency > North Carolina - ($ 300.00 - $ 500.00)
NC-141 2 Pounds December 1771
The higher pound denomination notes from this common issue are much scarcer and not easily obtained in high-grade and problem free. This example has stunning print quality, boldly executed signatures and deep embossing. A real treasure that should find a happy home with one lucky collector.
Grade: PCGS Extremely Fine 45
Lot #1952 - Colonial Currency > North Carolina - ($ 300.00 - $ 500.00)
NC-142 3 Pounds December 1771
Superb eye appeal will follow this note in all its travels. These high denomination notes did not survive in high-grade CU condition so generally a nice XF or AU is all that one can hope for. This piece is incredibly well margined, with exceptional print quality and bold signatures. This bright note has a couple of repaired edge splits but they do little to interfere with the aesthetic charm of this note.
Grade: XF
Lot #1953 - Colonial Currency > North Carolina - ($ 1,000.00 - $ 1,500.00)
NC-176d $5 August 8, 1778
"The Rising States" is the motto seen on this gorgeous piece of Colonial Currency. It is wonderfully signed, boldly printed with great body to the paper. Crisp as the day it was printed. Newman lists this at $500 in XF with no higher grade given which makes sense as the few nice CU pieces that have reached the market in recent years realized four-figure prices. A really special piece that should grace only the finest of collections.
Grade: Very Choice CU
Lot #1954 - Colonial Currency > Rhode Island - ($ 150.00 - $ 300.00)
RI-212 3s November 6, 1775
While the novice Colonial collector might look at this note and wonder why it's here the advanced collector realizes how scarce this actually is. A much scarcer issue with most extant notes of the pence denominations. Apparent grade due to stains, splits and tape repairs; virtually all survivors seen have these problems.

Lot #1955 - Colonial Currency > Rhode Island - ($ 300.00 - $ 500.00)
RI-241 $1/16 September 5, 1776
This is actually a very nice example from this scarcer Rhode Island issue. These fractional denomination notes are generally the only ones that are seen with PCGS noting edge splits. The note is well signed with the detail all there. A problem free Fine would be roughly a $400 item.
Grade: PCGS Apparent Fine 12
Lot #1956 - Colonial Currency > Rhode Island - ($ 275.00 - $ 425.00)
RI-264 $1/36 May 22, 1777
A lovely example of this much scarcer lowest denomination from this small change issue. The paper is well embossed with bold signature and serial number. PCGS notes a restored corner and a small edge nick. In spite of these minor issues the eye appeal of this piece is exceptional for the grade.

Lot #1957 - Colonial Currency > Rhode Island - ($ 250.00 - $ 500.00)
RI-268 $1/9 May 22, 1777
Notes from this fractional issue have always intrigued this cataloger. The eye appeal is that of a fully XF example with PCGS noting minor restorations. Not too many examples from this issue survived in high grade and problem-free.
Grade: PCGS Apparent Very Fine 25
Lot #1958 - Colonial Currency > Rhode Island - ($ 500.00 - $ 750.00)
RI-283 $2 July 2, 1780
We are not always quite sure how to grade everything in the world but this Rhode Island note sure appears to be about 2-3 points too light on the grading spectrum. The margins are broad, the centering perfect on both front and back, and the paper quality second to none. This will not realize typical "65" money.

Lot #1959 - Colonial Currency > Rhode Island - ($ 750.00 - $ 1,250.00)
RI-285 $4 July 2, 1780
Fully signed and issued and found in this state of preservation is simply a marvel. Your cataloger has seen many of these notes fully signed and they are virtually always seen in the Fine to AU grade range, but cannot recall ever seeing one that was uncirculated and a Gem at that. With typical Gems bringing a few hundred dollars for the common remainders, you can expect this Jonathan Arnold endorsed note to bring two or three times that amount.
Grade: Gem CU
Lot #1960 - Colonial Currency > Rhode Island - ($ 300.00 - $ 600.00)
RI-285 $4 Jully 2, 1780
Fully signed and endorsed on the back by Jonathan Arnold. Rare as such in this condition as these are almost always circulated. Trimmed into the design at right which keeps a far higher grade from being realized. Bold signatures and serial number make this well embossed note a real treasure.

Lot #1963 - Colonial Currency > Rhode Island - ($ 250.00 - $ 400.00)
RI-298 20s May 1786
This is absolutely one of the nicest "64 PPQ" examples your cataloger has ever seen from this issue. Hulking margins are seen on all sides, the embossing is so high that it forms an obstacle course, and the signatures appear to have been applied last week. This should see some really strong interest before the hammer falls.

Lot #1966 - Colonial Currency > South Carolina - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
SC-99 10 Pounds June 1, 1775
The eye appeal of this piece is exceptional from the front. The note has the appearance of a solid VF with ample margins, five bold signatures and the vignette and motto clearly printed. The back shows a tape repair strip as well as some other minor tears and repairs. Essentially all notes from this issue are heavily problemed since the paper was large and thin so when folded it began to get damaged immediately. This is actually a well above average example from this scarcer South Carolina issue. Newman lists problem free VF notes at $1,000 and if actually free of problems it would be worth well in excess of that.
Grade: VF
Lot #1967 - Colonial Currency > South Carolina - ($ 600.00 - $ 900.00)
SC-132 $6 October 19, 1776
This is a much scarcer South Carolina issue and is seen with little frequency in the market place. From the back this note looks like a solid XF but the front reveals a couple of extra folds that limit the grade. In recent times lower end VF notes have brought $500-$600 so we would certainly expect to see a greater realization for this note which is very choice for a VF.
Grade: VF/XF

Lot #1972 - Colonial Currency > Virginia - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
VA-130 $10 October 20, 1777
While not a particularly rare issue an overwhelming majority of notes are seen in the Fine to VF grade range. Boldly signed and well margined AU examples such as this are few and far between. PCGS hasn't maintained a Colonial census as of yet but I'm guessing you can count the AUs on one hand. Listed at $900 in UNC in the new Newman reference, but those are virtually nonexistent.

Lot #1973 - Colonial Currency > Virginia - ($ 250.00 - $ 450.00)
VA-195 $400 October 16, 1780
An exceptional example of this rice paper issue that looks fully XF through the holder. The signatures are bold with excellent printing and ample margins. These notes are tissue thin and they split, tore and got damaged very easily so it is no surprise that PCGS notes a hole at right. But for this fact this is a stunning note worthy of the strongest of bids.

Lot #1974 - Colonial Currency > Virginia - ($ 350.00 - $ 550.00)
VA-203b $20 March 1, 1781
This lowest denomination printed on thick paper is very scarce and rarely seen in the marketplace. The paper is bright, the signatures are bold and the print quality utterly superb. PCGS notes mounting remnants and a small edge tear but they do little to distract from the allure of this scarce note.

A lovely example of the thick paper variety from this issue. Fully bright, wonderfully signed and exceptionally well printed. VA-208 1b $750 March 1, 1781
This is the variety printed on the thick paper. It is very well signed and boldly printed. The eye appeal and fold count looks closer to that of an XF note but has been given the apparent grade due to edge repairs.

Lot #1977 - Colonial Currency > Virginia - ($ 325.00 - $ 475.00)
VA-216 $50 May 7, 1781
An extremely attractive example of this lower denomination note from the final Virginia issue. The paper is very bright, with bold signatures and deep embossing. There are a couple of tape repaired edge splits but they are confined to the back and of very little consequence. With a problem free example being a $500 note we would expect just a little less for this piece.

While not one of the very scarce lower denomination examples from this issue, the $100 note is far tougher to obtain than many of the high denomination notes. Through the holder this beauty looks to be a wonderfully printed, boldly embossed XF note and we feel its bold signatures and exceptional eye appeal will carry the day.

Chemicograph Backs Intended For Confederate Currency
This envelope contains one set of six SDC Chemicograph backs $5, $10, $20, $50, $100 and $500, printed in colors on bond paper with wide margins. The six prints were struck from "Chemicograph" plates ordered by the Treasury Department of the Confederate State of America from S. Straker and Sons, engravers, London, England. The plates were intended to be used for printing backs of notes of the February 17, 1864 issue. Shipments of plates were made from London early in January, 1864, but all disappeared. Only after about three-quarters of a century were plates located to complete a set of all six denominations which is believed to be unique. Because of the importance of these historic Chemicograph plates, they were given to the Smithsonian Institution, United States National Museum, Washington, D.C. Prior to that the donor had a limited number of sets of prints struck from the plates. On the reverse of each SDC print will be found "Printed from a genuine S. Straker & Sons London plate" and the circular seal "SDC". These identify the prints as authentic impressions from the Smithsonian plates and certify them as genuine backs of an SDC set.

Rarely do Gem examples of this Friedberg number come along due to the fact that there is almost always one very tight margin (usually at the left). This note exhibits utter originality, huge margins and exceptional centering. The bronze oval is so bright that you must shield your eyes to look at it. The surcharges are razor sharp and if the back design didn't just touch the edge this would likely have graded superb. Green Sheet ask is $240 and that is for the far more common Fr. 1244.

Lot #2014 - Fractional Currency - ($ 200.00 - $ 400.00)
Fr. 1272SP 15c Narrow Margin Back Third Issue
A bright and colorful green back specimen that would go nicely with any narrow Grant-Sherman face specimen. PMG notes that it's been hinged but it appears to be minor and might actually be removable but we cannot tell.
Grade: PMG Choice Uncirculated 63
Lot #2015 - Fractional Currency - ($ 300.00 - $ 500.00)
Fr. 1273-5SP 15c Narrow Margin Back Third Issue
A delightful red back specimen that would pair nicely with the green back in this sale and certainly with any Grant-Sherman face specimen. It's a little tight on the sides but otherwise appears to be very nice for the grade.
Grade: PMG Choice Uncirculated 63
Lot #2016 - Fractional Currency - ($ 250.00 - $ 500.00)
Lot of Fractional Notes
This 12 piece lot includes: Fr. 1281 25c XF/AU Fr. 1303 25c AU Fr. 1308 25c VG, Fine & CU 3 pcs Fr. 1309 25c VG/Fine 3 pcs Fr. 1309 25c VF 2 pcs Fr. 1317 50c Fine Fr. 1366 50c VF
Lot #2017 - Fractional Currency - ($ 800.00 - $ 1,200.00)
Fr. 1279 25c First Issue
An incredibly well margined and deeply perforated example of this more challenging type. The color is superb and the depth of printing is unrivaled. Few Gems make their way to the market which presents a unique opportunity for the aspiring Fractional collector. The Green Sheet asking price is almost $700 in this grade.
Grade: Gem CU
Lot #2018 - Fractional Currency - ($ 275.00 - $ 425.00)
Fr. 1280 25c First Issue
This very scarce perforated, no monogram note is very difficult to locate in CU grades. This example looks like a near Gem from the front but the back reveals some very light folds. A gorgeous example for the grade that has exceptional color.
Grade: PCGS Extremely Fine 45
Lot #2019 - Fractional Currency - ($ 450.00 - $ 650.00)
Fr. 1282 25c First Issue
The typical bright yellow paper is seen on this straight edge, no monogram note which is second in scarcity to only the Fr. 1313 for this First Issue. The margins are not as broad as we would like to see but there are no folds and the note is choice. A search for uncirculated examples could take a long time to complete.
Grade: Choice CU
Lot #2020 - Fractional Currency - ($ 250.00 - $ 400.00)
Fr. 1286 25c Second Issue
From the face this scarcer Friedberg number gives all the appearance of a Superb Gem with gigantic margins and perfect centering. There is some very light, and possibly removable, discoloration on the back corners. You are not likely to encounter many other examples of this number with such spectacular eye appeal.
Grade: Choice CU
Lot #2021 - Fractional Currency - ($ 400.00 - $ 600.00)
Fr. 1286 25c Slate Back Second Issue.
An otherwise mundane example of a circulated Fractional piece that suddenly brings your eyes to life as you realize that it is a slate back. The back design is completely devoid of any purple color and is just a solid black type of color, hence the name "slate back." These usually command multiples of what a typical example would bring in that grade.
Grade: XF/AU
Lot #2022 - Fractional Currency - ($ 650.00 - $ 950.00)
Fr. 1288 25c Second Issue
A sleeper variety in all grades and truly a rare number in this advanced state of preservation. From the face this note is nothing short of a Superb Gem. The bronzing is as bright as the midday sun and the original embossing is visible in the bottom of the portrait area. Unlike so many examples of this variety the "2" surcharge is very clearly defined and not the usual amorphous blob which is so often encountered. The back design is shifted slightly but not touching the edge which is all that limits our assessment.
Grade: Gem CU
Lot #2023 - Fractional Currency - ($ 275.00 - $ 425.00)
Fr. 1291 25c Third Issue
Punch through embossing and resplendent ink colors are found on this near Gem red back Fessenden note.
Grade: PMG Choice Uncirculated 64 EPQ
Lot #2024 - Fractional Currency - ($ 250.00 - $ 450.00)
Fr. 1292 25c Third Issue
Incredibly deep embossing and spectacular ink colors give this scarcer "a" on face red back Fessenden all the eye appeal one could hope for. Some light handling keeps an extra point or two off of the grade.
Grade: Choice CU
Lot #2025 - Fractional Currency - ($ 600.00 - $ 900.00)
Fr. 1297 25c Third Issue
Broad margins and picture perfect centering allow for this unusually high-grade note, as Gems of this number are few and far between. The bronzing and color are as bold as we have ever seen on one of these fiber paper notes. The back centering is low to the edge and there is a central pinch. Save for these facts this note would be a Gem. Green Sheet ask in the assigned grade is $525.
Grade: Very Choice CU
Lot #2026 - Fractional Currency - ($ 200.00 - $ 400.00)
Fr. 1312 50c First Issue
A bright and colorful example of this First Issue type note.
Grade: Choice CU
Lot #2027 - Fractional Currency - ($ 750.00 - $ 1,250.00)
Fr. 1313 50c First Issue
This is the scarcest of the 16 First Issue Fractional varieties and certainly the scarcest in Ch. CU or better grade. Bright paper, deep color and excellent centering welcome this note into someone's collection. Examples in this grade generally approach the four-figure mark and such a result would certainly not surprise us here.
Grade: Choice CU
Lot #2028 - Fractional Currency - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
Fr. 1316 50c Second Issue
A lovely example of this far scarcer variety with "18-63" surcharges. The centering is picture perfect, the bronzing bright and the color exceptional. Gem examples are virtually impossible to find so usually a nice Ch. or Very Ch. CU note is what collectors are left grasping for. This is worth far in excess of what the common Fr. 1317 and Fr. 1318 are valued at.
Grade: Very Choice CU
Lot #2029 - Fractional Currency - ($ 300.00 - $ 500.00)
Fr. 1317 50c Second Issue
A lovely example of this Second Issue higher denomination Fractional type. The surcharges are far more clearly defined than what is usually seen, particularly the "A" which is frequently just a blob. Ample margins on all sides with the top to bottom centering falling just short of Gem status. Green Sheet ask is $275 and we don't feel that is asking enough.
Grade: Very Choice CU
Lot #2030 - Fractional Currency - ($ 450.00 - $ 750.00)
Fr. 1320 50c Second Issue
This is a very challenging note to obtain with this degree of technical grade and eye appeal, even with its minor problems. It has a small edge tear and minor mounting damage on the back. Fr. 1322 is by far the most common variety for this fiber paper type with high grade examples of this number few and far between. The note faces up as a screaming Gem with deep embossing, excellent bronzing and superb printing. Auction results have shown that this would be approximately a $1,000 note without any of the minor issues.
Grade: PCGS Apparent Very Choice New 64
Lot #2031 - Fractional Currency - ($ 300.00 - $ 500.00)
Fr. 1324 50c Third Issue
Cherry red inks and blinding bronzing are seen in abundance on this deeply embossed red back Spinner. A trace of corner handling precludes a higher grade from being assigned.
Grade: Choice CU
Lot #2032 - Fractional Currency - ($ 350.00 - $ 550.00)
Fr. 1328SP 50c Narrow Margin Pair Third Issue
A lovely hand-signed with red back Spinner narrow margin specimen pair. Green Sheet ask is about $275 for the pair.
Grade: PMG Choice Uncirculated 64
Lot #2033 - Fractional Currency - ($ 300.00 - $ 500.00)
Fr. 1331 50c Third Issue
Bright bronze and great color are seen on this green back Spinner.
Grade: PMG Choice Uncirculated 64 EPQ
Lot #2034 - Fractional Currency - ($ 300.00 - $ 500.00)
Fr. 1337 50c Third Issue
This is a very scarce variety that is rarely seen in CU grade. The green back Spinners are dirt common but with the back surcharges are actually much scarcer and have always been underappreciated. This lovely note with "1" on face has bright bronzing, cavernous embossing and superb eye appeal for the grade.
Grade: XF/AU
Lot #2035 - Fractional Currency - ($ 200.00 - $ 300.00)
Fr. 1339 50c Third Issue
A brightly bronzed and incredibly well embossed example of this Type II Spinner that has an incredibly well hidden center fold.
Grade: Choice AU
Lot #2036 - Fractional Currency - ($ 300.00 - $ 500.00)
Fr. 1341 50c Third Issue
This scarcer "1" on face Type II Spinner might have a somewhat smaller bottom margin but the other three margins are so huge that they more than make up for the grade.
Grade: Very Choice CU
Lot #2037 - Fractional Currency - ($ 275.00 - $ 425.00)
Fr. 1346 50c Third Issue
Through the third party holder this gorgeous Justice note has the appearance of a screaming Gem. Stunning bronzing lends greatly to this note's aesthetic appeal with huge margins, deep embossing and exceptional color stating the case for this piece. This "a" on face variety is certainly a bit scarcer than its Fr. 1343 type mate and is considered far more valuable.
Grade: PCGS About New 58
Lot #2038 - Fractional Currency - ($ 375.00 - $ 525.00)
Fr. 1355SP 50c Wide Margin Face Third Issue
A fully wide example of this hand-signed Colby-Spinner Justice specimen. This note is bright, well printed and with great eye appeal for the grade as the centering is absolutely perfect. Wide Justice specimens have always far exceeded wholesale values due to the fact that they are so popular with collectors.
Grade: PMG Choice Uncirculated 63
Lot #2039 - Fractional Currency - ($ 600.00 - $ 900.00)
Fr. 1356 50c Third Issue
This is a really eye-popping example of this scarcer sub variety that is hand-signed with surcharges. Blinding bronzing, fiery red colors and solid paper surfaces will make this a welcome addition to someone's collection. The Green Sheet asking price of $440 in this grade is for the more common Fr. 1355 and we would expect the price of this note to easily exceed that assessment.
Grade: Choice CU
Lot #2040 - Fractional Currency - ($ 900.00 - $ 1,200.00)
Fr. 1362 50c Third Issue
This note faces up as one of the nicest Superb Gem examples we have seen on this green back Justice variety. The margins are huge for the type with picture perfect centering. Radiant bronze, depth of printing and virtually bottomless embossing attest to the originality of this piece. If the back design didn't just touch the edge this would be a $2,000 note. The Green Sheet asking price of $675 should be left in the rear view mirror once the hammer falls.
Grade: Gem CU
Lot #2041 - Fractional Currency - ($ 600.00 - $ 900.00)
Fr. 1376 50c Fourth Issue
A well centered and fresh example.
Grade: Gem CU
Lot #2042 - Fractional Currency - ($ 200.00 - $ 400.00)
Fr. 1376 50c Fourth Issue
A wonderfully margined Stanton note that possesses both deep embossing and ravishing color. A single center fold is the culprit that keeps this from a near four-figure price.
Grade: Choice AU
Lot #2043 - Fractional Currency - ($ 175.00 - $ 275.00)
Fr. 1376 50c Fourth Issue
A well margined and well centered Stanton note that has a pronounced blue right end. Lovely eye appeal for a somewhat soft fractional.
Grade: AU
Lot #2044 - Fractional Currency - ($ 175.00 - $ 325.00)

$100-$50 Bank of Chester County, West Chester Uncut Pair
Uncut sheet of two notes that is extremely rare. Printers were Draper, Underwood, Bald & Spencer. The Panic of 1837 occurred at a time when all the conditions were ripe for a crash, credit was stretched and real estate soared. President Jackson's famous specie circular directed that public lands could only be paid for in silver or gold. That which was to be used to purchase land came back to the banks for redemption and redemption was impossible. Specie payments were halted and many businesses went into bankruptcy. Prudent management enabled the Bank of Chester County to weather the crisis. In August 1838 the bank resumed specie payments. The decade prior to 1837 was one of prosperity for the Bank of Chester County. When its first charter expired in 1825 it was rechartered for a period of 12 years. In 1837 it received its third charter, this time for 15 years the stock was worth $40 per share. The circulating notes were renewed from time to time as needed. In 1834 the $5, $10, $20, $500 and $1,000 were made from new plates.
