Good for groceries and Queensware. This early Kansas scrip has never been seen before and there is no question this town, in the 1880s, was really the Wild West and at the heart of the Old West. It's interesting to note that the coupon was printed by Allison Coupon Co., 66 S. Illinois St., Indianapolis, IN. In 1889 a Dodge City business directory listed W.F. Dean and Frank Purdum, Groceries.

$1 W.L. Sims, Strong & Co., Ketesville
September 9, 1862. "Payable in Confederate Notes or State Bonds, when $10 or more are presented". Unlisted and exceptionally rare. On February 25, 1862 there was a skirmish at Keetsville. Josiah T. Keet, an Englishman, was a storekeeper with Wm. McClure. Keets bought the mill in 1861 from Barton Clements and it burned down before the war ended. This Wm. McClure also had a second mill. In 1865 the town name was changed to Washburn, located near the Roaring Spring River. This note walked into the St. Louis Show and was consigned there. This seems to be a different spelling but still apparently the same location.

A decent $1 Territorial from the capital of Colorado Territory and principal city. This is an evenly circulated example from this historic bank, chartered in 1865. It carries the signatures of George Washington Clayton, a famous philanthropist of the state and A. H. Moffat, of the gold coin and banking family. Hugo, NB, W10786
By far the rarest of the two Hugo banks. This institution was in business for just twelve years, during which time it issued 1,942 sheets of $5 and $10 Plainbacks only. Of those 7,768 notes, a mere two pieces remain today. The other note, a serial #2, appeared in the Currency Auctions of America inaugural sale of 1990. At that time the note was considered to be unique. This note was a new find when I offered it in my 1998 Memphis sale. That sale was noteworthy for the several incredible Colorado notes that were sold. This Hugo note slipped by most bidders, including Mr. Mayer, as it immediately followed the sale of the serial #1 Gill, Colorado. It reappeared a few years later in May 2001, where it was finally secured for this collection. It is the better of the two recorded examples, and sports lovely, two color signatures. The bright paper and vibrant colors make this note a knockout piece.

I first saw this note at Stack's in 1970 and I was told it was part of their private collection. There it remained for decades until John Whitney convinced them to let him have it. We sold it in 2004 and now it's time for another lucky collector to get an opportunity for ownership. There are just under 30 #1 $2s in the country, and I know there is a Monticello in the Higgins Museum but doubt it will be going anywhere. Iowa Deuces have always been elusive and I am not sure I have seen a higher grade, although one probably exists. This bank was chartered on Nov. 7, 1870, with a capital of $100,000. The note was undoubtedly saved by Theo. W. Barhydt, President, and was also signed by Cashier Edward McKitterick. This is the only First Charter known to exist on this bank.

This is one of the earliest of all known Iowa National Banks, if not from the entire county. This bank was chartered in 1865 and this note was signed by George L. Davenport, son of the town's founder, George Davenport. This is an extremely rare bank that has only one other example known and it's nothing close to the lovely serial #1, the top note from the first sheet, obviously saved by the bank or family. A rarity of the highest caliber, the Fr. 649a was possible for banks chartered for a five week period, between March 24, 1915 and June 30, 1915. The dates are historically significant: the earlier date is when Tehee-Burke assumed office and the later date is when the Aldrich-Vreeland Act expired and all banks switched to using 1902 Plainbacks. Collecting National Bank notes, by Friedberg numbers, remains in its infancy with a swelling audience of far-sighted appreciative collectors. As the number of collectors increases, expect the prices to equal those of "type" notes.

This note confuses me because it's a 'D' position note, indicating the bottom of the sheet, but at the upper right, within the margin, there are dates '1902-1908' which would normally be at the top of the sheet, unless the numbered $10-10-10-20 sheets were positions A-B-C-A and D-E-F-B. I have never run across this before. The note has body and excellent pen signatures but has a slightly rough bottom. An excessively rare bank with only five large notes reported.
