Fr. 123 $10 1923
This note has recently received the name "Poker Chip" for the round design on the back. This example is extremely high quality with all of the right characteristics necessary for a Gem example of this Friedberg number, but feel free to make your own judgment. The tag for a CGA grade of "67" remains but it has been removed from the holder.
Grade: Gem CU
Lot #739 - Large Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 7,500.00 - $ 12,500.00)
Fr. 123 $10 1923

Lot #744 - Large Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 12,500.00 - $ 25,000.00)
Fr. 151 $50 1869
Here is a Rainbow $50 that will fit into more collectors' budgets because of its grade and restoration that is hard to see, even with a good light. We have sold some beautiful notes in the last couple of years and this is not one of them, but it is intact and shows very well for the grade. Henry Clay would have been proud to be part of this design. Graded Choice Fine 15, marring and interior repairs, by PMG.
Grade: PMG Ch. Fine 15
Lot #745 - Large Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 7,000.00 - $ 12,000.00)
Fr. 164 $50 1880
A beautiful type note that is exceptional for the grade and it has the initial appearance of an UNC. The UNCs, with the small red seal, are basically non-existent even though this is the most often seen signature combination and seal. This high-grade circ note boasts bold reds, white paper and excellent centering.
Grade: XF/AU
Lot #746 - Large Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 25,000.00 - $ 50,000.00)
Fr. 168 $100 1869
This is one of very few opportunities you will ever have to acquire a $100 Rainbow. These are few and far between and they normally only come to the market when great collections are sold. This piece was actually part of a cash hoard found in a tree years ago. There is evidence of internal flaws and staining, but there are only 23 in private collections and few like this. I expect to see serious interest that could carry this to a lofty level. Graded Ch. Fine 15, internal staining and surface repairs, by PMG.
Grade: PMG Ch. Fine 15
Lot #747 - Large Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 15,000.00 - $ 30,000.00)

Amazing quality all comes together to make this lovely deuce one of the finest you will ever have a chance to own. I believe I remember a "68" in the $40,000 range. Lot #788 - Large Size Type Notes > Silver Certificates - ($ 25,000.00 - $ 50,000.00)
Fr. 265 $5 1886
This is far and away the rarest of all silver-dollar-backs and the only one that appears unavailable in UNC condition. Several have been called such, but further inspection proves otherwise. A couple of years back I sold a lovely VF/XF that looked AU for $15,000, and this premium issue should surely bring substantially more, therefore I feel the estimate is quite conservative. The paper quality and centering are decent, the color outstanding and the visual appeal beautiful. A proud addition to any collection.

Fr. 281 $5 1899
The always popular Indian Chief with excellent centering, razor sharp corners, vivid inks and not a single flaw or handling mark visible through the holder. In the past, notes like this traded as Gem CU. We find no reason to disagree with the assigned grade of Choice UNC 63 by CGA--if anything, the note appears to be nicer.

Lot #803 - Large Size Type Notes > Silver Certificates - ($ 8,500.00 - $ 12,500.00)
Fr. 282 $5 1923
The one-year Porthole type has been under collector demand for as long as I can remember. Although there are some collectors who avoid certain third-party grading services, this seems to be “the real deal”, as viewed through the holder. Embossing is plainly evident and the note appears to be completely original with just a touch of teller handling to confirm this. With Gems well into five-figures, this premium Choice CU example should offer an excellent compromise. Graded Choice UNC 63 by CGA.
Grade: CGA Ch. UNC 63

Lot #809 - Large Size Type Notes > Silver Certificates - ($ 27,500.00 - $ 32,500.00)
Fr. 309 $20 1880
This is a beautiful $20 Black Back from the first signature combination without the third signature. The quality of this note is exceptional. It does have three folds, but the color and centering are so outstanding it is absolutely one of the best available for the issue. This note is virtually equal to all I see listed (8-10) about the same grade. This note came from the Jim Thompson Collection and he had the best that money could buy, and in this case I would say he did have. Check the stats, look over the note and you will agree.
Grade: XF/AU

Fr. 309 $20 1880

This note is a gorgeous $20 Black Back and one of just 40 listed with this signature combination. Unlike the Fr. 309 offered here, the Fr. 310 has more pieces listed as AU. Even though some of this type are listed as UNC, I sincerely doubt that any, so add it to your list to consider. Graded Almost UNC 55PQ by CGC.

Fr. 335 $50 1891
The overall appearance of this $50 blue seal is absolutely gorgeous, but the paper is not completely original. It is also not an UNC, but just looks like one. It faces up beautifully and should make anyone proud to own it because the overall quality is just so darn nice. Edward Everett would be proud to know his portrait looks so good on this note.
Grade: XF/AU
Lot #815 - Large Size Type Notes > Silver Certificates - ($ 25,000.00 - $ 50,000.00)
Fr. 341 $100 1880
Black Back $100s are very rare and seldom offered except in top notch collections such as this. There are only 19 listed in collectors' hands. This note last appeared in our June 1999 sale, Lot 363. It appears the edges have seen some slight restoration (strengthening) to make sure it looked nice and would not easily continue to deteriorate. Lately the higher grades have brought over $200,000 making this a bargain by comparison.

The $10 FRBNs have always been scarce, yet they still don’t bring what they’re truly worth, but the smart buyers already know that. Only 32 known which isn’t enough to satisfy collectors. Restoration to upper right corner done well enough to fool many folks.

Lot #866 - Large Size Type Notes > Federal Reserve Bank Notes - ($ 12,500.00 - $ 17,500.00)
Fr. 831 $50 1918 St. Louis
This is the only Federal Reserve district to issue fifties and most were owned by William A. Philpott at one time or another. When all things regarding the quality of a note are taken into account, this gorgeous Original Series, with charter, came out at the top time after time as it was compared to other notes appearing on the market as the last 30 years have flown by. This note has four folds but it also has beautiful paper quality and is very well centered. The color is phenomenal, as are the signatures of D. Morgan and R.C. Woolworth. While technically this note is VF/XF with an expertly repaired small tear, the colors and quality will blow you away they are so vibrant. This note came from Harley Freeman and Amon Carter. There are 299 notes known, but less than 10% can hold a candle to this jewel. I guarantee the new owner will be pleased. The marginally better example in the Highland Park Collection realized just under $44,000 with a $50,000 estimate. This note cannot be far behind.

Fr. 1137 $5 1872 GBN
San Francisco, National Gold Bank & Trust Co., 1994
This is the Original Series without charter number, which is #1994, and it is the finest known example from the nine notes that are known to have survived. This beautiful note was sold by me (in conjunction with Steve Ivy) in 1977 as part of the J.T. Wright Collection. The overall quality of the face is just gorgeous and the back shows somewhat more wear from the quarter-fold. The color, which is an all important factor on Gold Bank Notes, is outstanding. I would be surprised to ever see a better example. The pen signatures are crystal clear as well. There was no example of this rare bank in the Highland Park Collection. This is infinitely rarer than the Sacramento note that realized nearly $44,000.

Sacramento, National Gold Bank of D.O. Mills & Co., 2014
This is an Original Series with charter #2014. The gold color shows clearly through the somewhat dirty paper we normally see on this series. There are 40 notes reported. The one in the Highland Park Collection was one of the best and realized nearly $44,000. Signed by Frank Mills, Cashier and Henry Miller, Vice President.

Fr. 1139 $5 1873 GBN #12
Santa Barbara, First National Gold Bank, 2104
The First National Gold Bank of Santa Barbara is certainly one of the rarest of all. A total of only 2,000 $5 notes were issued, and this is one of eight, from Santa Barbara, in private hands. This note can be traced to Harley Freeman and Amon Carter. It bears the signatures of A.L. Lincoln and Mortimer Cook. It has seen its share of wear, but it represents the best there is known, and this is serial #12! There is light, professional restoration to repair earlier damage.

Lot #1068 - National Bank Notes > California - ($ 20,000.00 - $ 30,000.00)
Fr. 1141 $5 1874 GBN
San Jose, Farmers National Gold Bank, 2158
This note was acquired from William P. Donlan in the early 1970s. While definitely not in the upper echelon of notes on this bank, it is well above the majority of known examples. There are two really nice ones, one being the notes we sold in the Highland Park Collection for nearly $55,000. This note will be more reasonable. It still has excellent gold toning with, once again, the back showing more wear. Excellent pen signatures.
Grade: Fine    Bank Name: San Jose, Farmers National Gold Bank, 2158
Lot #1069 - National Bank Notes > California - ($ 35,000.00 - $ 50,000.00)
Fr. 1142 $10 1870 GBN
San Francisco, First National Gold Bank, 1741
This is the $10 example, similar to the Fr. 1136 $5, which is most often seen on Gold Bank Notes. The total issue of $10s was 18,004 notes, of which 29 serial numbers have been recorded. There are five in government collections or museums, and four are graded AG or worse. Five are graded VF like this note, but there can be considerable differences with the grade. Today notes like this would be in the $35,000 to $60,000 range. This lovely $10 came from Harley Freeman to Amon Carter. This note is signed by D. Morgan and R.C. Woolworth. Mehl said, "Certainly VF for this very rare note worth double the $5 note."

Lot #1070 - National Bank Notes > California - ($ 25,000.00 - $ 50,000.00)
Fr. 1143 $10 1872 GBN #3
San Francisco, National Gold Bank & Trust Co., 1994
There are only twelve $10 notes in existence today from this National Gold Bank. Two others are listed as VF, as this note should be. Notes from this Gold Bank, chartered in 1872 and liquidated in 1879, are some of the most difficult of all to be found with 20 currently in the census of all denominations. Only $5 and $10 issues are known to exist. This note is serial #3, making it the fourth lowest number known, after the three serial #1 notes. The pedigree is to Harley Freeman and Amon Carter. It was acquired directly from Amon Carter by the collector at an ANA. The signatures are still very clear.

Lot #1071 - National Bank Notes > California - ($ 75,000.00 - $ 150,000.00)
Fr. 1144 $10 1872 GBN
Sacramento, National Gold Bank of D.O. Mills & Co., 2014
A great quality note that is absolutely the finest known in private hands. If the word I have is correct, the #1 note known has seen extreme sun fading since it was sold, by John Ford, to a western museum. One of the other four is laminated and the other two are lower grade, so there are really only three collectible notes. I don't know how much rarer it gets than this. This note was last offered in 1988 in the Gil Steinberg Collection that was sold by Stack's. The pen signature of the president, Frank Miller, is fully legible but of the cashier's I can only make out Edgar. There has not been another in public hands since 1991!

Fr. 1145 $10 1873 GBN
Santa Barbara, First National Gold Bank, 2104
I would like to say this is the finest known but I had one of the three known notes restored a few years ago and when sold in the O’Neal Collection in May 2005 it realized $48,875. This note, with even wear and excellent centering, is as nice and problem-free as any Gold Bank Note I have handled, no apologies necessary. It has bold signatures of A.L. Lincoln and Mortimer Cook. The issue was only 800 sheets, for a total of 2,400 notes. This will be one of the evening’s great prizes.

Fr. 1147 $10 1875 GBN
Stockton, First National Gold Bank, 2077
There is no series of notes listed in a census today that is more difficult to translate the grades without seeing the notes. We do know there are only seven in private collections, and the last offering was in the O'Neal Collection in 2005 where a note graded Fine realized $14,950. There is one other note graded Fine and its pedigree is the Freeman-Carter note. This note was from the Grinnell sale 10 years earlier. The note shows wear, but the back is better than most of this quality.

Fr. 1148 $10 1874 GBN
San Jose, Farmers National Gold Bank, 2158
There are 11 notes reported with two in seemingly permanent collections. This example is logically as nice as any of the listed notes. The signature of the cashier is light, but the president's is strong. The note has a strong gold color. I believe this came from Amon Carter, but not with the Harley Freeman Collection. Only 2,849 sheets of $10-10-10-20 notes were issued, and Harley Freeman had no example. A very rare note in any grade.
Grade: Fine    Bank Name: San Jose, Farmers National Gold Bank, 2158

Fr. 1151 $10 1875 GBN
Oakland, First National Gold Bank, 2248
There was no $10 Original in the Harley Freeman Collection, and one of the seven known is in a government collection. There appears to be one better, possibly two, but only by a fractional difference. There were only 1,600 sheets printed so they are all pretty darn special. This note is pretty much problem-free and has excellent signatures.
Grade: VG/Fine    Bank Name: Oakland, First National Gold Bank, 2248
Lot #1076 - National Bank Notes > California - ($ 100,000.00 - $ 200,000.00)
Fr. 1151a $10 1875 GBN
Oakland, Union National Gold Bank, 2266
There was no knowledge of this Gold Bank existing when the Standard Catalog was written, and B. Max Mehl catalogued the collection of Harley Freeman before it was sold intact to Amon Carter. This bank printed just 500 sheets of $10-10-10-20 and there are three notes known to exist. The last one offered may technically be the lowest grade. It was sold by Heritage in May 2005 for $92,000. This example is better as is the market. This note was used but is mostly problem-free, except for a spot near the bottom right. Another opportunity for a note from this bank to appear is very unlikely in any short timeframe. This is the key bank to a complete bank collection.
Grade: VG    Bank Name: Oakland, Union National Gold Bank, 2266
Lot #1077 - National Bank Notes > California - ($ 75,000.00 - $ 100,000.00)
Fr. 1152 $20 1870 GBN
San Francisco, First National Gold Bank, 1741
This is the First National Gold Bank of San Francisco Original Series with charter numbers. The total printing was only 11,248 notes. When B. Max Mehl catalogued this note for Harley Freeman he said, "I am tempted to classify this note as Extremely Fine as I know just how rare Gold Bank Notes in Choice condition are." It is VF, and of course an extreme rarity. Far more rare than the $10 note. It appears that the finest known example on this bank is now in the ANA Museum. The Highland Park, Gil Steinberg specimen was similar to this, but this beauty has slightly better back centering. The face centering is wonderful and the back is very nice as well. The signatures of D. Morgan and R.C. Woolworth are spectacular and the paper quality is amazing for this issue. Better notes have not been seen for decades. A tremendous addition to even the finest collections.
Grade: VF/XF    Bank Name: San Francisco, First National Gold Bank, 1741
Lot #1078 - National Bank Notes > California - ($ 40,000.00 - $ 60,000.00)
Fr. 1153 $20 1875 GBN
San Francisco, First National Gold Bank, 1741
This is the extremely rare 1875 Series Gold Bank Note of which only 3,600 notes were issued. Only seven notes, one of which is laminated, have survived. A better example realized $74,740 in the O'Neal Collection sale by Heritage in 2005. The Gold Bank Note design is printed on First Charter paper. We know this is a white paper note because of the asterisk near the plate position showing the re-engraved plate. This note was acquired by Don Kelly for $450 way back when. The note appears to be intact and basically problem-free; a statement rarely made about Gold Bank Notes. It also appears to be at least close to the finest among those known. A true rarity that is seldom seen.

Lot #1079 - National Bank Notes > California - ($ 30,000.00 - $ 50,000.00)

San Jose, Farmers National Gold Bank, 2158
This note can be identified to the Harley Freeman-Amon Carter Collections by the three initials at the left end, as mentioned by B. Max Mehl in his description. The Highland Park Collection had no example of this Friedberg number. One of the eight known notes is in a government collection. It appears that a couple of others are better than this note, but this one faces up well and has excellent pen signatures. There were 2,849 twenties issued.
Grade: VG    Bank Name: San Jose, Farmers National Gold Bank, 2158
Lot #1080 - National Bank Notes > California - ($ 200,000.00 - $ 400,000.00)
Fr. 1159 $20 1875 GBN
Oakland, Union National Gold Bank, 2266
This is one of just 500 $20 notes printed for this ultra rare California Gold Bank. It previously came from the collections of Harley Freeman and Amon Carter. This is the only note known in private hands, but the government has a note in the Smithsonian Institute, and I suppose it is not destined for sale in our lifetime. The overall quality of this note is quite acceptable. The gold color is vivid and the signatures of Palmer and Kaerney are strong. The back shows slightly more wear, but barely. This is an icon among Gold Bank Notes and only one collector can own it tonight. This bank is the key to completing a collection by bank!
Grade: Fine    Bank Name: Oakland, Union National Gold Bank, 2266

Fr. 1161 $50 1874 GBN
San Jose, Farmers National Gold Bank, 2158
B. Max Mehl had this to say about this amazing note: "Strictly Fine, can certainly be classed as Very Fine for this great rarity. One of the rarest of all notes in this great collection." Boy, is that a mouthful as the Freeman Collection was full of rare notes. This is the only $50 Gold Bank Note known that is not from San Francisco, and it was one of 400 sheets printed, each with a single $50 and $100. No $100s are known. Rarity of this type cannot be overemphasized. The census shows seven examples for the type but one was once laminated, ruined and is now in hundreds of pieces. Another is in the ANA Museum (not much chance on that one). It has been 10 years since we offered the Levitan note, which I had restored, and it is still a low grade. There has not been a $50 Gold Bank Note in nice condition for sale publicly since 1965, and this is the only one known. San Francisco $50 Gold Bank Notes have never been publicly offered. As B. Max Mehl said, "This is one of the rarest notes in this great collection."
Grade: F/VF    Bank Name: San Jose, Farmers National Gold Bank, 2158
Lot #1082 - National Bank Notes > California - ($ 350,000.00 - $ 500,000.00)
Fr. 1162 $100 1870 GBN
San Francisco, First National Gold Bank, 1741
This note comes once again from the collection of Harley Freeman (1925-1953), Amon Carter (1953-1982) and then a private collector who is now selling. This is one of only nine notes for the entire type, but one of those is in the ANA Museum, courtesy of Aubrey Bebee. The ANA note and two others, all the highest grades, are on white paper and is quite possibly why their quality is a bit better. This note appears to be the best of the gold paper Gold Bank Notes, a fact that most collectors appreciate. I have not seen a white paper note in years, and the last time I checked the XF was quoted at $1,500,000 privately. This note is really quite nice with great gold face color and excellent signatures of D. Morgan and R.C. Woolworth. The lowest grade known, from Petaluma, sold for $97,750 in 2005. These notes are extremely rare and quality such as this has not been available at public auction since Harley Freeman acquired this note in the Grinnell sale in 1945. Each of these $100 Gold Bank Notes are extremely rare and are from five different banks, on two different papers. If you are lucky and persistent enough to acquire this note tonight you should be ecstatic as no note of this type and quality has been publicly available since 1973, and that's a long time!

Lot #1087 - Large Size Type Notes > Gold Certificates - ($ 40,000.00 - $ 60,000.00)
Fr. 1177 $20 1882
This is a beautiful large brown seal $20 Gold Certificate that was last offered by us in 1986. For some reason it is listed as a VF, but no doubt when graded it will be an XF 40, as the three folds are hard, but there are no others. The paper quality is beautiful, as are the colors and centering. Only 25 notes are in collectors' hands today, and only four should be better; with a few the same grade, yet probably not as attractive in most instances. This note is a beauty.
Grade: XF

This is a beautiful example of the 1882 $20 Department Series that was previously from our June 2000 sale, Lot 504. The quality is gorgeous, just as nice as it could possibly be for the grade. The color, paper quality and centering are all just primo for the grade.

Lot #1101 - Large Size Type Notes > Gold Certificates - ($ 2,500.00 - $ 3,500.00)
Fr. 1200 $50 1922
A beautiful $50 Gold Certificate that previously came from the Eliasburg Collection, Lot 2179. There is a faint centerfold but the note has great color, centering, embossing and originality.
Grade: Ch. AU
Lot #1102 - Large Size Type Notes > Gold Certificates - ($ 6,000.00 - $ 10,000.00)
Fr. 1214 $100 1882
This note came from a January 1997 CAA sale where it realized $3,295, which seems like a lot to me for the time. It is a very high-quality 1882 Department Series $100 with a centerfold. Today we should still see a significant advance from that result of 10 years ago.
Grade: AU
Lot #1103 - Large Size Type Notes > Gold Certificates - ($ 1,500.00 - $ 2,500.00)
Fr. 1215 $100 1922

Lot #1104 - Large Size Type Notes > Gold Certificates - ($ 20,000.00 - $ 40,000.00)
Fr. 1216b $500 1882
Records currently show 46 pieces of the Teehee-Burke signature combination on the 1882 $500 Gold Certificate. Of the 46 pieces reported only eight are about the same grade and 10 are better. There are no UNC examples known to me. The color and centering are quite nice on the back and the face is even nicer than the back. Quality that is sure to please the new owner.
Grade: VF +
Lot #1105 - Large Size Type Notes > Gold Certificates - ($ 22,500.00 - $ 32,500.00)
Fr. 1220 $1,000 1922
We last offered this lovely $1,000 Gold Certificate in the John Whitney Walter Collection in October 2004 in which it was one of our highlight floor sales of the day. In that prestigious collection this note was described as, "The portrait of Alexander Hamilton was used on all $1,000 Gold Certificates but the engraving was changed between 1882 and the 1907 to 1922 design. The $1,000 Gold Certificate has long had romance beyond the reality of these issues. They are always sought and, of course, having been illegal for many years, there have been examples appear since the ban was lifted. The 1997 Gengerke census showed 28 reported, but now there are 33 notes listed, with the most notes known in this grade range. This note was last offered by CAA in September 2000 (Lot 1836) where it realized $16,500. Today the price range should be similar." The current population shows 38 notes reported, including all those held by government agencies and museums. Graded VF 20, restoration, by PMG.
