This is the only verifiable serial #1 Fr. 62 that is known, and another, whose exact variety is questioned, has not been seen for over 30 years. This note has the American Bank Note Company/National Bank Note Company at the bottom, the 1862 date and Second Obligation on the back. It was first offered by Stack's in 1956, and a generation later by Kagin's. It has been 30 years since its last public appearance. A valuable and evenly circulated #1 note from this series. This could make the start of quite a set of early #1 notes. This is a very scarce variety with only 42 notes reported, and only six listed as nice as AU. Graded VF 25 by CGA.

This is one of only four known examples in private collections, while three others are institutionalized. This note is totally original and has only been on the market publicly, once in 1975, by Superior. No doubt the buyer was Bob Denerson, an early 1970s era Los Angeles collector who regularly competed with Jim Thompson to build the best collection by Friedberg. The collection was sold to a Midwestern dealer (not me) in early 1980.

This note was acquired by the consignor in excess of $20,000 at acquisition.

The Atlanta district printed 34,000 notes and issued only 26,800. Of that total only nine have survived. This is the second of four consecutive notes which apparently appeared in the late 1970s. This type remains one of the greatest because of its condition and rarity. A broad margined Gem from the run of five pieces. This note has not been offered publicly since 1986. It originally appeared through Dean Oakes in 1976, and this jewel faces up as well as any imaginable, although I cannot see embossing. It is much better centered than #22726, which realized $74,750 from the Dave Rickey Collection. Graded Gem UNC 67 by CGA.

This note bears the courtesy signature of General J. M. Wainright, U.S. Army. Wainright succeeded MacArthur and defended Bataan. He was a prisoner of war for three years and was the highest rank captured. For his efforts he received the Congressional Medal of Honor. After an exhaustive search, we find no other examples of Wainright on any paper money.
