Fr. 457 $100 1875
Madison, First NB, 111
This 1875 $100 First Charter is clearly an amazing rarity for virtually every reason collectors of NBN's love them. Madison is the county seat of Jefferson County and sits on the Ohio River. It is the largest city between Louisville and Cincinnati. Originally plotted in 1810, it was an entry point to the Indiana Territory and by 1850 it was the third largest city behind New Albany and Indianapolis. Madison was home to two early National Banks. This one and the North Branch of Madison #1457. Today nearly fifty large notes and 39 small notes have been reported, but only two first charters. Amazing evenly circulated $100 1875 First Charter that was one of only 699 1875 $100's printed. This bank did issue original series $100's, but none are known. This jewel if a perfect VF 20-25 as it was when it was sold by us in February 1995 for $7,150. This note carries the March 2, 1863 plate date which is early as I recall. The penned signatures of Danl. E. Doherty and Thomas A Pogue are clear and there are a few pinholes. There are towns named Madison in 32 states.
Grade: VF    Bank Name: Madison, First NB, 111
