Lot #89462 - Large Size Type Notes > Gold Certificates - ($ 14,000.00 - $ 18,000.00)
Fr. 1216 $500 1882 Department Series
The Fr. 1216 is the rarest in shear terms of number of all small red seal $500 Gold Certificates, which I say includes: Fr. 1216 28 reported; 1216a 34 reported; 1216b 54 reported; 1217 63 reported. This is also the earliest issue with the Lyons-Roberts signature combination and the Department Series. The note is well circulated but without repair or restoration. There are numerous pinholes, all intact, and teller handling from a lifetime of being recounted by bankers and bank examiners. The finest known is call a '50' and second is a '40'. Twelve grade lower, four are similar and twelve are better. The high mark by price is the AU 50 at $93,000, sold last August. A cool note for a collector. This note brought $11,400 last year. PMG notes: pinholes.

Notes like this are such a joy to catalog. This bank note is dated May 22, 1920 and there are 25 large notes recorded. There is another UNC from the same sheet but it clearly lacks margins for its grade. This note is beautifully signed with bold stamped signatures of A.S. Stackham and Carey B. Adams, along with pristine paper quality and beauty. I was told the owner held onto this as the best. PMG notes: staple holes.
