2018 November Fall In Kansas Auction > Nov. 14 @ 1 PM (CT) Session 2 - US - 2018 November Fall In Kansas Auction

Lot #28870 - Continental Currency - ($ 700.00 - $ 1,400.00)
CC-12 $2 November 29, 1775
A much tougher Continental Deuce that is very scarce in any CU grade, with only three finer at both services combined. PCGS notes: minor mounting remnants on back. Only a small top margin limits the grade.
Grade: PCGS New 61
Lot #28871 - Continental Currency - ($ 300.00 - $ 600.00)
CC-17 $7 Nov. 29, 1775
A nice note with rounded corners.
Grade: XF +
Lot #28872 - Continental Currency - ($ 1,750.00 - $ 3,250.00)
CC-19 $1/6 February 17, 1776
These Fugio Fractional Continental notes are probably one of the most popular types. They feature the Fugio sundial on the front with "Mind Your Business" motto. The back shows 13 linked chains with the name of each colony. The $1/6 denomination is the scarcest of the fractional notes from this issue. Very well signed and with excellent margins on all sides. The Newman note, in this same PCGS AU 55 grade, realized $2,640 a year ago. A lightly circulated piece that is surely a four-figure note
Grade: PCGS Ch. Abt. New 55
Lot #28873 - Continental Currency - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
CC-20 $1/3 Feb. 17, 1776
There are some stains and a single worn hole on this Fugio on face note.
Grade: VF
Lot #28874 - Continental Currency - ($ 300.00 - $ 600.00)
CC-28 $6 February 17, 1776 Blue Counterfeit Detector
Only a single example has been graded by either service. This note faces up like a gorgeous near Gem with excellent margins and robust printing. There is a tiny slit near top center and some trace glue at upper right. Still a lovely piece.
Grade: Ch. CU
Lot #28875 - Continental Currency - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
CC-31 $1 May 9, 1776
A very desirable $1 Continental with a couple of wide margins.
Grade: PMG XF 40
Lot #28876 - Continental Currency - ($ 300.00 - $ 600.00)
CC-85 $50 Sept. 26, 1778
A pleasing $50 with strong signatures and excellent body.
Grade: Ch. AU
Lot #28877 - Continental Currency - ($ 350.00 - $ 700.00)
CC-96 $45 Jan. 14, 1779
An example of the $45 issue but a bit lighter print.
Grade: AU
Lot #28878 - Colonial Currency > Connecticut - ($ 700.00 - $ 1,400.00)
CT-214/CT-215 2d/3d October 11, 1777 Uncut Horizontal Pair
Rare is rare. For the entire Colony of Connecticut there are only two sheets that we have seen, with the provenances Boyd and Newman attached to those. This pair has a center fold between the two notes and uniform staining seen throughout. With that said, the embossing pops off of the paper and the red signatures and serial numbers look as bold the day they were applied. As if there weren't enough, these notes obviously are uncancelled as well. A crushingly rare pair destined for an advanced collection.
Grade: Ch. Abt. UNC
Lot #28879 - Colonial Currency > Connecticut - ($ 600.00 - $ 1,200.00)
CT-218 7d October 11, 1777 Uncancelled
Tied with two others for Top Pop at both services combined. Uncancelled notes from this small change issue are actually far scarcer than a lot of the uncancelled 1775 and 1776 notes encountered. It displays excellent centering and bountiful margins. A vibrant piece that sold for close to $500 back in 2010.
Grade: PMG Gem UNC 65 EPQ
Lot #28880 - Colonial Currency > Delaware - ($ 600.00 - $ 1,200.00)
DE-79 10s January 1, 1776
A robust Gem type note from this mid-Atlantic colony. This note first sold at auction for $575 a decade ago.
Grade: PMG Gem UNC 65 EPQ
Lot #28881 - Colonial Currency > Georgia - ($ 3,000.00 - $ 6,000.00)
GA-122 $20 May 4, 1778
Tied for Top Pop with one other at PMG. They have graded 20 examples. Hugely margined, wonderfully centered, and with bold printing details. Five signatures are seen, one of which is William Few, signer of the Constitution. The Newman note graded PCGS XF 45 and topped the $2,000 mark. This same note first sold for over $6,500 in the 2010 Memphis sale.
Grade: PMG Gem UNC 65 EPQ
Lot #28882 - Colonial Currency > Maryland - ($ 300.00 - $ 600.00)
MD-64 $1/2 April 10, 1774
Behemoth margins are seen on all sides as well as an essentially full indent at left. Boldly signed by Clapham and Eddis. The front says "1774" and the back inscription states "Revolutionary Money" and "Beth from Miss Piggot." An exceptionally handsome note, especially for a fractional denomination.
Grade: PCGS Abt. New 53 PPQ
Lot #28883 - Colonial Currency > New Jersey - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
NJ-155 6s December 31, 1763
This is a really good grade for this series from which Gem notes are legitimately rare. A decade ago this same note first sold for over $400 at auction.
Grade: PMG Ch. UNC 64 EPQ
Lot #28884 - Colonial Currency > New Jersey - ($ 325.00 - $ 575.00)
NJ-184 $1 June 9, 1780
The note itself is really pretty and from a much scarcer later series. PCGS notes: small edge tear.
Grade: PCGS XF 40
Lot #28885 - Colonial Currency > New York - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
NY-156 5 Pounds April 2, 1759
A really high-grade example of this much scarcer 1759 issue. This same note sold for $480 earlier this year. PCGS notes: some edge splits and tears.
Grade: PCGS VF 35
Lot #28886 - Colonial Currency > New York - ($ 300.00 - $ 600.00)
NY-167 10 Pounds February 16, 1771
A really nice example printed on bright paper and showing solid detail. Probably 95% of the notes from this series are in apparent or net holders. PCGS notes: edge splits and stains
Grade: PCGS XF 40
Lot #28887 - Colonial Currency > North Carolina - ($ 600.00 - $ 1,200.00)
NC-79 20s March 9, 1754
The note is bright, wholly intact, with great printing quality and signatures. You will find few pieces that look as nice as this one. PCGS notes: restorations, although we cannot really see them.
Grade: PCGS VF 30
Lot #28888 - Colonial Currency > North Carolina - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
NC-124 20s April 23, 1761
That is where the bad qualities stop and the positive attributes begin. This lightly circulated example has stunning paper, deep embossing, bold signatures, and printing that looks as if it were applied this week. Typical AU notes at this grade level, when available, sell in the upper hundreds of dollars. PCGS notes: small hole at bottom left.
Grade: PCGS Abt. New 55
Lot #28889 - Colonial Currency > North Carolina - ($ 600.00 - $ 1,200.00)
NC-191c $25 Justitia addit Fiduciam May 10, 1780
The Latin motto translates "Justice adds Trust." This is a wonderfully margined example with excellent detail and evidence of light circulation. The Thomas Gray collection note that just sold was in this same AU 50 grade but had a tape repair. That fact did not stop it from topping the $400 mark in September.
Grade: PCGS Abt. New 50
Lot #28890 - Colonial Currency > Pennsylvania - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
PA-75 15s January 1, 1756
A much scarcer early Benjamin Franklin series. It faces up decently and the text is clear. PCGS notes: missing UL corner, splits and repairs, backed.
Grade: PCGS Fine 12
Lot #28891 - Colonial Currency > Pennsylvania - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
PA-146 5s March 20, 1771
A wonderfully margined example of this red and black columned note. The eye appeal of this piece looks a lot better than the assigned VF 35 grade.
Grade: PMG Ch. VF 35
Lot #28892 - Colonial Currency > Rhode Island - ($ 800.00 - $ 1,600.00)
RI-284 $3 July 2, 1780 Fully Signed
A common Rhode Island note that really has a lot going for it. It is seen here in a Superb Gem grade, a fact that makes it worth several hundred dollars on its own merit. That would be if it were a remainder. The back endorsement is signed by Jon(athan) Arnold and is therefore fully issued and much scarcer at this grade level.
Grade: PCGS Superb Gem New 67 PPQ
Lot #28893 - Colonial Currency > Rhode Island - ($ 750.00 - $ 1,500.00)
RI-284 $3 July 2, 1780
Only a single example graded finer at both services combined. A blazing Superb Gem of a Colonial. Thickly applied signatures and serial number are combined with mountainous embossing and utterly fresh paper. This same note first sold publicly a decade ago for over $850.
Grade: PMG Superb Gem UNC 67 EPQ
Lot #28894 - Colonial Currency > Rhode Island - ($ 2,500.00 - $ 5,000.00)
RI-290 6d May 1786
Tied with two others for Top Pop at PCGS. Both of those notes have sold for $2,000-$2,500 each. This note is visual perfection as we are not sure what precludes it from achieving a perfect grade. Absolutely flawless and the perfect representative for any Colonial currency type set.
Grade: PCGS Superb Gem New 69 PPQ
Lot #28895 - Colonial Currency > South Carolina - ($ 600.00 - $ 1,200.00)
SC-136a $2 December 23, 1776
Single Wakefield signature. Remainder. Natural deckled edge seen at right. This same note topped the $500 figure a decade ago in an HA auction. A stellar note that is great for type.
Grade: PMG Gem UNC 65 EPQ
Lot #28896 - Colonial Currency > South Carolina - ($ 300.00 - $ 600.00)
SC-197 1s/3d July 6, 1789

Grade: PMG Ch. Abt. New 58

Fr. 60 $2 1917 #D55555555A
If you want to build a truly amazing large size type set you can start right here with this solid serial #D55555555A. Just try and see how many wonderful serial numbers you can find to build out a great type set, even if you only use the 'common' types. Solid serial numbers, single digits, stars, radars, repeaters - there are lots of possibilities without even starting with rarities for types. This note is a beauty with great color and nicely centered. There is a fold nearly at one end.
Grade: XF/AU

These notes show the basic outlines for the following notes: Fr. 83-92 $5 1907 Legal Tender; Fr. 114-122 $10 1901 Legal Tender; Fr. 140-147 $20 1880 Legal Tender; Fr. 162-164 $50 1880 Legal Tender; Fr. 179-182 $100 1880 Legal Tender; Fr. 185b-c $500 1875 Legal Tender; Fr. 187g-I $1,000 1880 Legal Tender. This note has very nice body and color for the grade, and the repaired split is insignificant for this rarity. PMG notes: repaired, split.

This is the first set of Proofs issued for this new series on December 21, 1914 according to the enclosed letter that was written to McAdoo, dated October 28, 1914. The letter to McAdoo reads as follows, "My dear Mr. Secretary: I have the honor to present you herewith, suitably framed, the first die proof impression of the face and back of the $5 federal reserve notes for the Richmond Bank first. These plates went to press this morning, and on Saturday morning I shall begin delivery of $500,000 in 5s for this Bank; on Monday I shall deliver $1,200,000 for the Richmond Bank and at least $1,000,000 for Atlanta. I shall finish the delivery of the 5s for the Richmond Bank on Wednesday, and the 5s for the Atlanta Bank on Friday, but commencing Wednesday I shall begin deliveries of 5s at the rate of $1,000,000 a day for Dallas and St. Louis. I shall begin the delivery of the $10 notes about the 6th of November and will complete them as rapidly as the 5s. I expect to make a substantial delivery for New York before the 15th of next month. On or about the 15th, I expect to be delivering the federal reserve notes to the Comptroller to the extent of $6,000,000 a day. It is my intention to have mounted a sufficient number of die proof impressions of all denominations, similar to those presented to you today, for your use, as the Comptroller, Mr. Williams, suggested that it would be very appropriate for you to present President Wilson and the Members of the Federal Reserve Board specimen of these notes, which I consider the most artistic ever issued by the United States Government. At the same time, we have incorporated in the designs of these notes all the essential technical features that would further circumvent counterfeiting. Respectively yours, Joseph E. Ralph". This collection is a much finer quality than the set we sold for John Whitney Walter which had some damage from light. The notes in this set are graded very high and are very pretty.

A superior T-29 note that is about 90% fully framed. This slave picking cotton type is notorious for its terrible trim jobs. Examples that are well margined always carry a healthy premium.
Grade: PCGS VF 25
Lot #29003 - Confederate Items - ($ 700.00 - $ 1,400.00)
T-31 $5 September 2, 1861
A somewhat better Confederate type with bold orange "5" and "FIVE" protectors. In our IPMS sale, we sold a PMG VF 25 that had inferior color and tighter margins. That note still managed a $600 price tag.
Grade: PCGS VF 20
Lot #29004 - Confederate Items - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)

Grade: F/VF
Lot #29005 - Confederate Items - ($ 800.00 - $ 1,600.00)
T-38 $2 September 2, 1861
This is the much scarcer variety with the incorrect 1861 date. Rather acceptable margins compared to a lot of other T-38 notes which are trimmed tight. PCGS notes Small repairs, minor mounting remnants on back. In our Kansas City sale we sold an awful VG with a huge missing piece for $180. Notes like the present offering tend to rapidly approach the thousand dollar threshold.

Fr. 659 $20 1902ND
Brookville, Franklin County NB, 5629
Small size notes abound for this Brookville bank, but large notes are a different story. Barely a dozen are listed in the census and they rarely appear publicly. The only other recent example we can find is Leon Hendrickson's $10 Plain Back. That PMG VF 30 with tears sold for about $1,000 in 2016. This note, with no problems whatsoever and bold pen signatures, should result in a much better fate.

Coon Rapids, First NB, 5514
If one developed a list of the most sought after town names for National Bank Notes, Coon Rapids would certainly be on the short list. While not scarce this bright and pleasing AU certainly is near the top of the grading scale for this bank. Over a dozen years ago, the E plate position note from this sheet sold publicly for $1,725. Around that same time the consecutive notes on both side of this C000103A note, sold for between $1,200 and $1,500 each.

Not a scarce charter in absolute terms but certainly a scarce note in reality. This is one of only two Second Charter Date Backs known on the bank and it is easily the finer of the two. A note that has a lot going for it. The town name itself evokes images of Napoleon's defeat in battle. This fits nicely into any Private Name collection of Nationals. This has always been one of the greatest names and I'm sure the demand and price will reflect that. The note has excellent signatures that are perfectly clear. This note was the last one of its quality offered and that was in 2001; two low grade Blue Seals and a Fine $20 Value Back which brought $8,596 in 2007. There was a heavy fold that has been restored to protect any possibility of splitting.

Only a soft center bend precludes a higher grade on this magnificent "Lazy Deuce." A refreshing change from the low grade examples from around the country or the hoard notes. A satisfying Washington County institution that was one of four banks in town. Although the '35 EPQ' grade is spot on, the dark stamped signatures, rich ink colors, and oozing originality all attest to a much better fate. We first sold this same note twenty years ago before there was any price appreciation in Nationals. Even at that, it still topped the $450 figure.

Here is a note of amazing quality, Superb Gem CU, a grade not likely given by the grading services. There are only 12 large notes recorded. Before this one the only two Brown Backs were a mid-grade #1 $10 and $20. This is just the best you could ask for and it's completely new to my records. What a great town name that seems so unlikely with our immigrant thoughts these days. Seems we could lean from history.

Johnstown, United States NB 13781
Here is an example of the classic "forbidden title" - the Act of May 24, 1926, forbade the use of the words "United States" in a bank's title. However, this bank was chartered as the United States National Bank in 1933, one of just two banks in the nation chartered after 1926 and so named. This note is not to be confused with the extremely common notes of charter #5903, also from this town and bearing a similar title; this the true "forbidden title" example. Extremely desirable and highly sought after. It is worth noting that this note is also a partial replacement note, with the left serial number normal and the right serial number hand punched in.
