2018 IPMS Auction - June > Doris Bart Collection of Errors, Autographs & Fancy Serial Number Notes

Lot #19662 - Error Notes > Large Size Legal Tender Issues - ($ 750.00 - $ 1,500.00)
Fr. 41a $2 1862 Error
America's first $2 error; 3" interior gutter fold bisects both the front and back printings, beginning at the upper center, although it is more visible from the backside. Two small glassine tape reinforcements on the back affect nothing.
Grade: Fine
Lot #19663 - Error Notes > Large Size Legal Tender Issues - ($ 750.00 - $ 1,500.00)
Fr. 60 $2 1917 Error
Wonderfully fresh, deeply embossed, perfectly centered with gutter interrupting the black face printing plus the prefix in the lower serial.
Grade: Gem New
Lot #19664 - Error Notes > Large Size Legal Tender Issues - ($ 600.00 - $ 1,200.00)
Fr. 60 $2 1917 Error
Off the market since the CAA sale of FUN, 2000. Striking gutter cuts through the face and overprint on the right. As made margin paper split where the gutter begins.
Grade: VF
Lot #19665 - Error Notes > Large Size Silver Certificates - ($ 10,000.00 - $ 20,000.00)
Fr. 256 $2 1899 Printed Fold Error
Breath-taking printed fold with the entire "2" counter and nearly all of the serial number printed on the back. A rival to every other large size printed fold known on any denomination. Ex-Grinnell.
Grade: VF +
Lot #19666 - Error Notes > Large Size Silver Certificates - ($ 650.00 - $ 1,250.00)
Fr. 255 $2 1899 Error
Inverted back. One of only three reported for this Friedberg number. Few scattered pinholes and very lightest bit of edge roughness along top margin.
Grade: VG
Lot #19667 - Error Notes > Large Size Silver Certificates - ($ 750.00 - $ 1,500.00)
Fr. 258 $2 1899 Error
Gutter fold disrupts the back and bolts right through Washington's oval. Exceptional grade for any large size error. Last sold by CAA in 2003.
Grade: XF +
Lot #19668 - Error Notes > Large Size Silver Certificates - ($ 650.00 - $ 1,250.00)
Fr. 257 $2 1899 Error
Back is dramatically misaligned with the design running off the right end.
Grade: PMG Fine 15
Lot #19669 - Error Notes > Large Size Federal Reserve Bank Notes - ($ 15,000.00 - $ 30,000.00)
Fr. 747 $2 / 1 1918 Double Denomination Error
Double denomination with back Heraldic Green Eagle which belongs on an Ace. There are three known double denominations for the Friedberg Number, all originated from the same sheet. The other two exist in comparable grades of VG and Fine. While small size double denominations often bring $35,000 and up, inexplicably large size sell for less. Although PMG comments "trimmed" we are hard pressed to locate exactly where. A highlight from the Doris A. Bart Collection.
Grade: PMG VG 10 Net
Lot #19670 - Error Notes > Large Size Federal Reserve Bank Notes - ($ 2,500.00 - $ 5,000.00)
Fr. 759 $2 1918 Error
Obstruction of blue Treasury seal. Acquired from Harry Jones where it resided in his personal collection for decades. Ex-Grinnell.
Grade: Ch. VF
Lot #19671 - Error Notes > Confederate Notes - ($ 150.00 - $ 300.00)
T-42 $2 1862 Confederate Error
Although minor gutter folds on Obsolete and Confederates are anything but rare, few can hold a candle to this dramatic example.
Grade: Fine
Lot #19672 - Small Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 1,000.00 - $ 2,000.00)
$2 circa-1928 Specimen
If not unique, we've certainly never seen another. Masterfully engraved and imprinted uniface with neat roulette-type perforation 'SPECIMEN'. Unlisted in Hessler and worthy of additional research and an article shedding light on this enigmatic piece. Strikingly similar to a progress proof. Two tiny spots of discoloration mentioned for accuracy.
Grade: AU
Lot #19673 - Error Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
Fr. 1501 $2 1928 Error
Engraving error; missing the back plate. Research by the late Chuck O'Donnell, in the 1960s, suggested that this should be back plate 100, although this has never been confirmed. Most examples exist in low to mid-grades making authentication difficult. This pristine example, and the lot that follows, are remarkable examples.
Grade: PCGS Ch. New 63
Lot #19674 - Error Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 350.00 - $ 700.00)
Fr. 1501 $2 1928 Error
Engraving error; missing the back plate number. Perfectly centered and deeply embossed, with the lightest teller handling at extreme right.
Grade: Very Ch. Abt. New
Lot #19675 - Error Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 350.00 - $ 700.00)
Fr. 1501 $2 1928 Error
Faulty alignment; the back is dramatically askew, while the front is perfectly centered.
Grade: Ch. AU
Lot #19676 - Error Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 150.00 - $ 300.00)
Fr. 1502 $2 1928-A Error
Vertical gutter extending from top to bottom near the left end of the front.
Grade: VF
Lot #19677 - Error Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 175.00 - $ 350.00)
Fr. 1502 $2 1928-A Error
Dramatic over inking of Treasury seal and serial numbers, almost suggesting a multiple printing.
Grade: VF
Lot #19678 - Error Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 12,500.00 - $ 25,000.00)
Fr. 1505 $2 1928-D Inverted Overprint Error
Unique inverted overprint. This is the sole survivor of an upside down serial number and seal on the entire series of 1928. Only three collectors in history have been able to assemble a set of $2 inverts, including the series 1928, 1953, and 1976. One of the pinnacles from the Doris A. Bart Collection and certain to become a crown jewel of the next collection it enters. When the hammer falls, another generation might pass before the opportunity presents itself again. An irreplaceable opportunity to enhance a landmark collection.
Grade: VF
Lot #19679 - Error Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 450.00 - $ 900.00)
Fr. 1505 $2 1928-D Error
Bidirectional misalignment, preserved in an uncharacteristically high grade.
Grade: PMG Ch. UNC 64 EPQ
Lot #19680 - Error Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 650.00 - $ 1,250.00)
Fr. 1505 $2 1928-D Error
Inverted back. All early USN errors are tough and this invert offers a pleasing addition to any collection. Tiny corner repair.
Grade: VF
Lot #19681 - Error Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 350.00 - $ 700.00)
Fr. 1505 $2 1928-D Error
Enormous gutter fold with missile-like projection from upper left. Most gutters are worth a yawn, this is worth serious consideration.
Grade: Ch. VF
Lot #19682 - Error Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 250.00 - $ 500.00)
Fr. 1505 $2 1928-D Error
Dramatic shift of the first print, such that the back is nearly running off of the right side end leaving gigantic margins on the left and bottom..
Grade: Ch. VF
Lot #19683 - Small Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
Fr. 1505 $2 1928-D #D22222202A
Near-solid number, acquired from David Koble more than 20 years ago.
Grade: Gem New
Lot #19684 - Small Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
Fr. 1505 $2 1928-D #D-A Autograph of Henry Morganthua, Jr.
Fr. 1505 $2 1928-D #D-A Autograph of Henry Morganthau, Jr.
First we have seen of Henry Morgenthau, Jr. signing a red seal Deuce. Although he remains an elusive signer on $1 Silvers, to find his penned signature on a $2 USN remains likely unique. Acquired from Julian Leidman in 2000.
Grade: Gem New
Lot #19685 - Small Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
Fr. 1506 $2 1928-E Autograph of Fred B. Vinson
Utterly unique. No other Vinson autographs appear in the census on $2 USN. An epic note destined to enhance the finest of collections. From Julian Leidman in 2000.
Grade: Gem New
Lot #19686 - Error Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 250.00 - $ 500.00)
Fr. 1505 $2 1928-D Error
Cutting error. Moderate square-shaped flap remains attached to the lower left corner, as the note originated from the "F" position. Had this miscut not been identified while still new, it's likely it would have torn off during circulation.
Grade: Gem New
Lot #19687 - Error Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
Fr. 1507 $2 1928-F Error
Both the front and back are miscut with narrow to non-existent bottom margins and wide upper ones. The back shows part of the sheet numbers on this "A" position note.
Grade: PCGS VF 35 PPQ
Lot #19688 - Error Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
Fr. 1507* $2 1928-F* Error
Star note with 1" gutter in upper right through the face printing, extending into the margin, resulting in distortion of the right edge.
Grade: VF
Lot #19689 - Error Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 250.00 - $ 500.00)
Fr. 1508 $2 1928-G Error
Long, oblique gutter from the left edge through the red Treasury seal.
Grade: VF
Lot #19690 - Error Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 450.00 - $ 900.00)
Fr. 1508 $2 1928-G Error
They say "a picture is worth a thousand words", in this case the picture should be worth ten thousand words. Among the largest interior folds on any USN. A few short edge splits in the upper margin and wallet stain mentioned for accuracy.
Grade: VF
Lot #19691 - Error Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 150.00 - $ 300.00)
Fr. 1508 $2 1928-G Error
Cutting error very similar to the 1928-F illustrated above, except in a loftier grade.
Grade: Gem New
Lot #19692 - Error Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 250.00 - $ 500.00)
Fr. 1508 $2 1928-G Error
Ink smears generally make this cataloguer yawn, but then again few look like this high grade, red seal Deuce with a large ink smear that starts extremely thick and fades in the margin as the wiper cleaned the plate.
Grade: Very Ch. Abt. New
Lot #19693 - Error Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 10.00 - $ 50.00)
Fr. 1507 $2 1928-F Error
Final 1928 "error" is not a genuine BEP error. Fake cutting error created from an uncut sheet sold to the public way back in the day. Sold as a novelty item only and will not grade at the services. Although it's tragically common to see deceptive pieces cut from modern sheets, this is the only one we've encountered on an early note. Not a genuine error.
Grade: Gem New
Lot #19694 - Error Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 7,500.00 - $ 15,000.00)
Fr. 1509 $2 1953 Inverted Overprint Error
Inverted overprint with red serials and seal plus signatures and series applied upside down. The plate note from the 4th Edition of the Bart reference book where it carries a conservative estimate of $7,500 in XF. One of only four known on the 1953 series, with none known on the 1963 series. This auction allows an astute collector to become the fourth person in history to own a Series 1928, Series 1953, and Series 1976 inverted overprint. A highlight of the Doris A. Bart Collection and destined to provide equal pleasure to the next conservator of this landmark error.
Grade: Ch. VF
Lot #19695 - Error Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 1,500.00 - $ 3,000.00)
Fr. 1509 $2 1953 Error
Printed fold with enormous flap from right end folded over from the back capturing the red Treasury seal, a couple of digits from the serial, and the imprinted signature of Humphrey. The upper left corner has been replaced with consummate skill. A more dramatic printed fold might not exist on red seal $2s.
Grade: Ch. VF
Lot #19696 - Small Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 650.00 - $ 1,250.00)
Fr. 1509 $2 1953 Autographs of Timothy Leary & Linus Pauling
Leary led the counterculture revolution of the 1960s and was a proponent of the psychedelic drug LSD. Perhaps fitting to this auction is one of Leary's most famous quotes "women who seek to be equal with men lack ambition." Pauling was an American chemist, biochemist and peace activist. He is considered one of the 20 most important scientists in history. An uncommon pairing of signatures, each rare in their own right.
Grade: VF
Lot #19697 - Small Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 200.00 - $ 400.00)
Fr. 1509 $2 1953 Autograph of G.M. Humphrey
Humphrey has boldly affixed his signature above his engraved name as Secretary of the Treasury.
Grade: Very Ch. New
Lot #19698 - Error Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 125.00 - $ 250.00)
Fr. 1509 $2 1953 Error
Gutter fold of reasonable width extends 75% of the way directly through the black printing near the left end of the front, making it extremely obvious.
Grade: Ch. VF
Lot #19699 - Error Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 150.00 - $ 300.00)
Fr. 1509 $2 1953 Error
Misaligned back with portion adjacent note visible across the top.
Grade: PCGS VF 20
Lot #19700 - Error Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 150.00 - $ 300.00)
Fr. 1509 $2 1953 Error
Misaligned back, even more askew than note illustrated in previous lot, but this comes from the top of the sheet so it shows the "Christmas tree" alignment indicator instead of another note.
Grade: VF
Lot #19701 - Error Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 150.00 - $ 300.00)
Fr. 1509 $2 1953 Error
Messed up! Giant white border at front right, shift of overprint with suffix letter atop black second print, back likewise misaligned with four alignment indicators showing in the upper margin.
Grade: VF
Lot #19702 - Error Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 250.00 - $ 500.00)
Fr. 1510 $2 1953-A Error
Cutting error with entire design from note above seen in the upper margin
Grade: Ch. New
Lot #19703 - Error Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 200.00 - $ 400.00)
Fr. 1510 $2 1953-A Error
Board break along entire left end; while not the sexiest error, prohibitively rare on Legal Tenders. Two light numerals on front and insignificant tear confined to bottom margin.
Grade: VF
Lot #19704 - Error Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 150.00 - $ 300.00)
Fr. 1510 $2 1953-A Error
Diagonal gutter fold cuts through the lower left corner of the face printing on this high grade error.
Grade: Gem New
Lot #19705 - Error Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 7,500.00 - $ 15,000.00)
Fr. 1510 $2 1953-A Double Printing Error
Unique! Eminently rarer than the 1976 double overprints of which about a dozen exist and they sell for $20,000 (an example of that error appears later in the sale). This error with distinct double printing of both the series and the signatures, occurred during a transitional period when the BEP switched from including these as part of the serial number and seal overprint to later being engraved as part of the second printing. Decades ago, Harry E. Jones coined the term "4th printing" to describe transitional errors on $1 Silver Certificates which were printed contemporaneously to this. A note for the ages. A highlight of the Doris A. Bart Collection.
Grade: PCGS VF 30 PPQ
Lot #19706 - Error Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 250.00 - $ 500.00)
Fr. 1510 $2 1953-A Error
Two bold gutters divide the back printing, one running vertically, the other obliquely; just plain weird.
Grade: Fine
Lot #19707 - Error Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 150.00 - $ 300.00)
Fr. 1510 $2 1953-A Error
Bold offset along the bottom of the back with transfer of the second print, likely from a folded sheet. Two lightly penned numbers on front don't detract.
Grade: XF
Lot #19708 - Error Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 150.00 - $ 300.00)
Fr. 1510 $2 1953-A Error
Dark 1/2" wide offset along the right end of the back.
Grade: VF
Lot #19709 - Small Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 250.00 - $ 500.00)
Fr. 1511* $2 1953-B* Autograph
Autograph of Elizabeth Rudel Smith neatly penned in black ink above her engraved signature on a star note. While autographs of Smith are challenging enough on $1 Silvers, this is the first we recall on any Red Seal, much less a star note.
Grade: Ch. New
Lot #19710 - Error Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 350.00 - $ 700.00)
Fr. 1513 $2 1963 Error
Large triangular-shaped obstruction, perfectly positioned to bisect the portrait oval of Jefferson into upper and lower halves.
Grade: Abt. New
Lot #19711 - Error Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 200.00 - $ 400.00)
Fr. 1513* $2 1963* Error
Obstruction of the design frame along the right end on a star replacement note.
Grade: Abt. New
Lot #19712 - Small Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 250.00 - $ 500.00)
Fr. 1513 $2 1963 Autograph
Autographs of both Kathryn O'Hay Granahan and Douglas Dillon adorn the front of this note. Dual autographs remain a challenge to locate on $2 Legal Tenders.
Grade: Gem New
Lot #19713 - Small Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 150.00 - $ 300.00)
Fr. 1513* $2 1963* Autograph
Autograph of Douglas Dillon, likely signed later in life. Only about six Dillon signed stars are known.
Grade: Very Ch. New
Lot #19714 - Small Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 250.00 - $ 500.00)
Fr. 1513 $2 1963 #A00000097A
Demand for "special" fancy numbers appears to be at an all time high. This lovely two-digit Red Seal came from David Koble, Mid American Currency, more than two decades ago.
Grade: Ch. VF
Lot #19715 - Small Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
Fr. 1513* $2 1963* Low Serial Star: *00000064A
Miracle of survival as this note traveled through commerce briefly before being recognized for its importance. Short upper margin tear affects nothing. We sold this note in 2000 for $195; it should fare much better tonight with a more sophisticated audience.
Grade: VF
Lot #19716 - Small Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 100.00 - $ 200.00)
Fr. 1513 $2 1963 #A0513350A
Perfect palindrome with matching prefix and suffix letters. Red seal radars are scarce commodities.
Grade: Very Ch. VF
Lot #19717 - Small Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 100.00 - $ 200.00)
Fr. 1513 $2 1963 #A06655660A
Another opportunity to obtain a radar serial on a scarce series.
Grade: Very Ch. VF
Lot #19718 - Small Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 100.00 - $ 200.00)
Fr. 1513 $2 1963 Bi-Centennial Postmark
Bicentennial postmark on a red seal Deuce. Postally cancelled 13ยข flag stamp with date of July 4, 1976, enhanced by the postal imprint of a log cabin and the dates "1776-1976". While we have seen similar cancellations on $2 1976 FRN green seals (which were released about three months prior to the Bicentennial), this is the lone example we've seen on a Legal Tender.
Grade: Very Ch. VF
Lot #19719 - Error Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 350.00 - $ 700.00)
Fr. 1514 $2 1963-A Error
Obstructed back print, likely cheesecloth or wiper paper. Unusual example of an obstruction on a high grade note.
Grade: PCGS Ch. Abt. New 58 PPQ
Lot #19720 - Error Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 200.00 - $ 400.00)
Fr. 1514 $2 1963-A Error
Nice vertical gutter with white void from top to bottom affecting the second print. We last sold this note in 2009; now time for another collector to enjoy it.
Grade: Very Ch. New
Lot #19721 - Error Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 150.00 - $ 300.00)
Fr. 1514 $2 1963-A Error
Gutter crosses through portrait oval, from top to bottom. Interestingly, this note has a red inspector's crayon rejection mark at the right end, yet still escaped into circulation.
Grade: VF
Lot #19722 - Small Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 100.00 - $ 200.00)
Fr. 1514* $2 1963-A #*00940994A

Fr. 1514 $2 1963-A Error
Ink smear on the back from the bushes next to Monticello fanning out and upward with a tornado-like appearance.
Grade: Ch. New
Lot #19724 - Error Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 100.00 - $ 200.00)
Fr. 1935-A $2 1976 Boston Error
Misaligned overprint with shift right such that suffix letter encroaches on face print at right.
Grade: Ch. New
Lot #19725 - Small Size Type Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 150.00 - $ 300.00)
Fr. 1935-A $2 1976 Boston #A22229222A

Lot #19726 - Small Size Type Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 75.00 - $ 150.00)
"Chinese Counter Note"
Face design of 1976 $2 with Asian characters printed uniface on security paper. Used to familiarize cashiers with the introduced design. Fascinating, if nothing else.
Grade: Ch. Abt. New
Lot #19727 - Error Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
Fr. 1935-B $2 1976 New York Error
H-A / B-A mismatched block letters. A popular error as the mistake is immediately obvious at the beginning of each serial.
Grade: PCGS New 62 PPQ
Lot #19728 - Error Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 600.00 - $ 1,200.00)
Fr. 1935-B $2 1976 New York Error
Mismatched serial numbers: the left ends #542A, the right ends #642A. Mismatched serial numbers are far scarcer on $2s than the mismatched block letters.
Grade: Ch. New
Lot #19729 - Error Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
Fr. 1935-B $2 1976 New York Error
Major ink smear obliterating 25% of the front; a finer example might not exist.
Grade: XF
Lot #19730 - Error Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 200.00 - $ 400.00)
Fr. 1935-B $2 1976 New York Error
Cool cutting error with design frame from adjacent note clearly visible at the bottom on the front and a gigantic lower margin on the back. A winner.
Grade: Ch. VF
Lot #19731 - Error Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
Fr. 1935-C* $2 1976 Philadelphia Error
Unique, monster error to kick off mistakes from the Philadelphia district and on a star, to boot! Radical dropped block with the district seal atop the serial number with downward displacement of district numbers.
Grade: Ch. New
Lot #19732 - Error Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 350.00 - $ 700.00)
Fr. 1935-C $2 1976 Philadelphia Error
Massive, broad ink smear obliterating the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
Grade: XF +
Lot #19733 - Error Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 150.00 - $ 300.00)
Fr. 1935-C $2 1976 Philadelphia Error
Raining ink all over the back as though a thunderstorm interrupted the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Smears from top to bottom on the back.
Grade: Ch. Abt. New
Lot #19734 - Error Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 150.00 - $ 300.00)
Fr. 1935-C $2 1976 Philadelphia Error

Grade: Ch. New
Lot #19735 - Error Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 150.00 - $ 300.00)
Fr. 1935-C $2 1976 Philadelphia Error
Entire left margin covered, from top to bottom, in a uniform solvent/ink smear. PCGS notes: solvent smear on back and BEP rejection mark on face.

Lot #19736 - Error Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 200.00 - $ 400.00)
Fr. 1935-B $2 1976 New York Error
Light offset of the upper serial number and top of the green Treasury seal on the back. Definitely not common.
Grade: Ch. VF
Lot #19737 - Error Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 20,000.00 - $ 40,000.00)
Fr. 1935-D $2 1976 Cleveland Double Overprint Error
Double overprint; long considered the "sexiest" error across all denominations and series. Dramatic second overprint distantly separated from the first. Known only on the Cleveland district; only a dozen in the comprehensive Bart census. These have traded in excess of $20,000 at public auction and we expect a similar realization in this session. An absolute highlight from the Doris A. Bart Collection.
Grade: PMG Gem UNC 65 EPQ

Fr. 1935-E $2 1976 Richmond Error
Enormous printed fold with the right serial number crisply imprinted on the back. A Bicentennial error of epic proportions. Ex-Fred Weinberg at $1,500 nearly two decades ago, definitely worth more today. Our advice to potential bidders - go find another.

Lot #19742 - Error Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 2,000.00 - $ 4,000.00)
Fr. 1935-E $2 1976 Richmond Error
Inverted overprint. The consumer demand for this key denomination always overshadows the availability of the $2 with the serial numbers and seal upside down. The final note to complete the inverted "trifecta", having offered the unique 1928 series inverted overprint and the ultra-rare 1953 inverted overprint in this session. Don't miss this chance to finalize your collection!
Grade: Very Ch. New
Lot #19743 - Error Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 125.00 - $ 250.00)
Fr. 1935- E $2 1976 Richmond Error
Large cloud-like board break across the back accompanied by the normal "bookend". While these were available in the early-1990s, few have reached the market since then. Board breaks seem vastly overlooked and undervalued according to our error consultant. Seems like the right time to buy.

Lot #19748 - Error Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 350.00 - $ 700.00)
Fr. 1935-F $2 1976 Atlanta Error
Defective paper stock; while this won't photograph well, the left half of the note is printed on extremely thin, translucent paper because the sludge nearly ran out while it was being rolled. This part of the roll should have been removed by the BEP, after being supplied by Crane. Admittedly, not visually exciting, but carries a R-8 relative rarity in the standard reference book on US paper money errors.

Lot #19751 - Error Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 8,000.00 - $ 15,000.00)
Fr. 1935-G $2 1976 Chicago Back Overprint Error
Epic error of the highest caliber: overprint on the back of a Deuce. Only six are known, making it the key piece to complete a denomination set. The standard reference book places a value of $7,500 on this error, an amount likely to be eclipsed. We recall none selling during the past decade or longer. A cornerstone piece from the Doris A. Bart Collection.

Lot #19752 - Error Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 1,500.00 - $ 3,000.00)
Fr. 1935-G $2 1976 Chicago Error
Insufficient inking of the entire back, with the upper 65% entirely absent. Authenticated by PCGS, removing fear that this example is altered. An unmistakable mistake, visible across the room.

Lot #19753 - Error Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 1,750.00 - $ 3,500.00)
Fr. 1935-G $2 1976 Chicago Error
Enormous printed fold with the entire Treasury seal and most of the serial number applied to the back. Printed folds on the $2 denomination are as rare as proverbial hen's teeth.

Lot #19754 - Error Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 1,250.00 - $ 2,500.00)
Fr. 1935-G $2 1976 Chicago Error
Another weird one, the likes of which we recall on only a few pieces, but this stands alone for the denomination. An important addition to any collection.

Lot #19759 - Error Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
Fr. 1935-G $2 1976 Chicago Error
Obstructed print with retained fragment. An extremely rare error with the highest (R-9) rating in the Bart reference. This is among the smallest examples we've seen, making it eminently affordable. There is only one other on the $2 denomination and it is similar in size.
Grade: Ch. New
Lot #19760 - Error Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 100.00 - $ 200.00)
Fr. 1935-G $2 1976 Chicago Error
Misaligned overprint with major downward shift of third printing such that the upper serials are embedded in the words "Washington, DC" and the Treasury seal is atop the engraved signature of Simon.

Lot #19761 - Error Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 100.00 - $ 200.00)

Lot #19766 - Error Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 10,000.00 - $ 20,000.00)
Fr. 1935-H $2 1976 St. Louis Blank Back Error
Iconic "blank back" on a Deuce. This cataloguer recalls a time, nearly twenty years ago, when a collector offered $25,000 for a blank back $2, to complete his denomination set and came up empty-handed after nearly a decade of looking. Much rarer than the highly-touted and more expensive double print $2s, as offered earlier in this collection. This note came from the Gregg Anderson Collection that we sold where it realized $8625 in spirited bidding. We anticipate that number to be left in the dust when the hammer falls. A crown jewel from the Doris A. Bart Collection.

Fr. 1935-H $2 1976 St. Louis Error
Technically printed consecutively to the note above, although four serial numbers apart as these were printed on the Magna Quad Press. A second impression which should be dark enough to satisfy the most demanding collector. It would be thrilling to see this pair remain together.

Fr. 1935-H $2 1976 St. Louis Error

Lot #19770 - Error Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 200.00 - $ 400.00)
Fr. 1935-H $2 1976 St. Louis Error
Roller offset error. The upper half of the black District seal appears two additional times as do the complete numeral "8" representing the District. Actually the only available example of a roller offset comes from the St. Louis $2s, so everybody needs one.

Fr. 1935-I $2 1976 Minneapolis Specimen
Authentic Bicentennial SPECIMEN with a ladder serial #I23456789A. These two-sided specimens have been deemed legal to own by Treasury Department officials. Almost other-worldly, with the word "SPECIMEN" stamped, in red ink, at the BEP twice on the front and twice on the back. PMG Notes: crisp paper with great embossing only pinholes prevent EPQ designation, which is a new one on us.

Lot #19775 - Error Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 250.00 - $ 500.00)
Fr. 1935-I $2 1976 Minneapolis Specimen Error
Four notes show! The front is shifted up and right far enough that the adjacent note appears in the margin, the design frame from the note below is along the bottom and the lower left corner has the tip of the fourth note. Absolutely wild. A similar error on a $50 brought more than $1,000 when offered for sale and it was no more dramatic than this example.

Major cutting error on this Bicentennial issue. Utterly beyond anything one might expect. The consignor paid a king's ransom to wisely acquire this note in 1980, as none finer have surfaced since then. Another landmark piece from the Doris A. Bart Collection.
