Lot #16772 - World Paper Money > Cyprus - ($ 2,500.00 - $ 3,000.00)
34a 500 Mils 1.3.1957
All dates for this type are challenging to find in UNC, with the 1957 being the most difficult. As stated by the Alexis Galatariotis' research report, from the total of 750,000 notes printed with a range of prefix A8-A10 there is enough evidence to support that this issue was not completely released. To be more precise, a large amount of the last prefix was kept in the Treasury and was destroyed during the 1960s. PCGS terms this "Abt. New 53 PPQ"; with this type, the PPQ is particularly significant.
Grade: Abt. New 53 PPQ    Bank Name: Government of Cyprus
Lot #16773 - World Paper Money > Cyprus - ($ 3,000.00 - $ 4,000.00)
36a 5 Pounds 15.3.1958
Highest denomination of this Queen Elizabeth II series; the only one issued with that date and the only one to carry the signature of T.S.C. McIlwain as Commissioner of Currency. It is reasonable to assume that previous issues of that denomination were almost exhausted from circulation and Treasury reserves and that there was a need for such a denomination in the market, given the fact that the 1957 note was a low print run. As per the Alexis Galatariotis research report, it can be confirmed that not all of the print run was actually released into general circulation; in fact, a large proportion was destroyed. This note, along with the 5 Pounds 1960, are Cyprus' rarest 5 Pounds Queen Elizabeth II bank notes, especially in such high grade. PCGS terms this "EF 40".
Grade: EF 40    Bank Name: Government of Cyprus
