He was elected mayor in 1862 and in the Fort Scott Bulletin, on November 8, 1862, it stated there were several banking officers in town but none better. It also stated that he issued fractional notes out of necessity for lack of change. (Information obtained from the Kansas Paper Money book by Steve Whitfield.) A nice looking remainder note. Fr. 2101-E $50 1928-A Richmond E-A Dark Green Seal
One of the very nicest we have come across. Do not be fooled, the Richmond district, particularly in Gem grade, is quite a scarce animal to tame. You will be hard pressed to find another equal to or nicer than this piece.

A great note at this grade level and one of only a couple that we have seen. It first sold for over $900 back in 2010. It is a great note in every respect of the word and the only question left is just how big of a four-figure price will it take to obtain it.

A stunning example from this better early $50 FRN series. This same note sold for $470 back in May and it hasn't gotten any more common since then.
Grade: PCGS Gem New 66 PPQ
Lot #10592 - Small Size Type Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
Fr. 2107-L* $50 1950 San Francisco L-* Mule
A really scarce San Francisco star note that has huge margins, great centering, natural paper wave, and mountainous embossing. A faint center fold keeps this from a four-figure price.
Grade: PCGS Ch. Abt. New 58 PPQ
Lot #10593 - Small Size Type Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)

With a seemingly infinitesimal printing of 256,000, it was almost insulting to Atlanta to even bother printing notes for its district. This is the only example listed in Track & Price and it's easy to see why. A great note for the small size specialist.

Another extremely scarce $50 star note, with this being one of the few Gems we have ever encountered. Tough in any CU grade to begin with, this St. Louis star is an outright rarity at this level. Lot #10670 - Large Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 7,500.00 - $ 15,000.00)
Fr. 125 $20 1862
A rare jewel in a sea of mediocrity with only 50 serial numbers recorded and to have this one above XF 40. This is a variety to sink your teeth into. Last one sold was in 2005 in the Rickey Collection where it was described as: "This Friedberg number is very rare, with only 31 serial numbers recorded, including at least four in permanent collections. This variety bears the March 10, 1862 date with American and National Bank Note Company printed across the lower border." There are only three or four of this issue graded as high as XF 40. This note has a couple of tiny repaired splits along the top. There have been none better ever offered, and certainly not since the Rickey Collection in 2005, when this note was purchased. PCGS notes: small repairs.
Grade: PCGS XF 40

What a wonderful set of two notes with serial #7. Here we have an amazing pair of Martha notes, each with a different seal and different backs. A great beginning for a #7 collector. (There is also a $100 1963-A FRN serial #7 elsewhere in the sale.) This is a rare opportunity to enjoy together or build a dream set! The Fr. 216 has three folds but otherwise it's a fresh and original Ch. UNC 64 EPQ also has a courtesy autograph of John Burke, who was a signer on notes from 1913 to 1922. The Fr. 215 is graded Ch. XF 45 EPQ. Two piece lot.

Lot #10687 - Large Size Type Notes > Silver Certificates - ($ 3,500.00 - $ 6,500.00)
Fr. 269 $5 1896
This is a wonderful example of a $5 Educational that was graded XF by me in November 1999 and sold as Lot 290 at $2,200. Today the grading services, using the technical consideration, would likely call this a '35'. While eye appeal, which I consider a major component of any grade, is off the charts. Amazing color, centering and overall appeal.

This is a rare Red Seal with only 11 examples recorded. It appears that only three are graded higher. None have been available for five years. *We were asked to grade this so we did. A comment of "Minor Restorations" must allude to a tiny nick visible at the top center. The note has great color but was likely flattened along the way. PCGS notes : minor restorations.

Fr. 1133-G $1,000 1918 Chicago
Records indicate there are 25 serial numbers recorded for this $1,000 FRN from Chicago. Probably only four or five are of higher quality than this example that was previously offered by us in February 2000, Lot 589. The note has excellent centering and very nice overall color. A note graded '25' brought $24,675 earlier this year, but '40' seems a more reasonable grade for this note, even if there is some minor comment. *We had a client ask to have this graded so we did. A comment of "Restorations" must reference edges that were straightened. A wonderful example. PCGS note : restorations.

Belmond, First NB, M8748
This is a truly rare Iowa location, east of Cherokee and not far from Eagle Grove. A quaint farming community in north central Iowa. The bank first issued Red Seals upon opening in 1907 this is only the third example known. It's the third note from the first sheet, position 'C'. The officers were J.B. Kaufman, Vice President and W.G. Rosencrans, Cashier. The bank printed only 250 sheets, with 200 sheets of $10-10-10-20 Red Seals and 1,820 Blue Seal sheets, both 1902 Plain Backs and Date Backs. I believe there are only seven or so $5 Red Seals known from the entire state.

Storm Lake, First NB, 2595
I have always been drawn to Iowa First Charters as a collector which may go back to around 1966-1968 when I first saw a Storm Lake First Charter. It took decades to acquire but I have one. This note is evenly circulated with excellent color and evidence of the folds on the back from use. The penned signatures are of James Harker, President and George Eastman, Assistant Cashier. It does have a tiny edge split and a pinhole or more. The bank was chartered on December 1, 1881 and was placed into receivership in December 1904 due to incompetent management.

This is a very tough type from Kansas but it's likely the lowest grade among the eight large notes reported. The National Bank Note Census shows only nine Original Series $5s. Signers were H.L. Lot #10923 - National Bank Notes > Nevada - ($ 4,000.00 - $ 8,000.00)
Fr. 682 $50 1902ND
Reno, NB, P8424
This $50 Nevada is new to the Track & Price census and it's the seventeenth $50 known on this charter; most any other $50s known are on Winnemucca. There are just over 100 large notes reported on this Washoe County bank and Reno was the big early Nevada city. I assume the high denominations were needed for the miners or assayers in the area but it seems that gambling was also an early need for cash. This was the first note that Zollie Kelman paid a premium for at $65, $15 over face value, around 1952 at the Jewelry Exchange, likely in the Twin Cities. Somewhat rounded corners but excellent black signatures. There is some edge wear as well.
Grade: Fine    Bank Name: Reno, NB, P8424

Lot #10925 - National Bank Notes > New Hampshire - ($ 25,000.00 - $ 50,000.00)
Fr. 388 $2 Original
Hillsborough, First NB, 1688
A rarity of the highest magnitude among Friedberg number collectors and New Hampshire National Bank Note collectors. This is one of only two known Jeffries-Spinner signature combination Lazy Deuces known from this charter. These bank officers served as Treasury officials together from October 5, 1867 to March 15, 1869. I can find four banks, including: Lake, Illinois, Springfield, MO, Mankata, MN and Hillsborough, NH to have surviving notes known that should be Jeffries-Spinner, with likely seven known examples. The nearest example is a VF 25 which realized $25,000 plus last year. While it is listed in the census as XF, with the horizontal and vertical folds I am confident a nice VF is a better representation of the grade. Neither end has margins but the quality is clear. The note has lovely pen signatures of Stephen Kenrick, President and J.C. Campbell, Cashier.
Grade: VF    Bank Name: Hillsborough, First NB, 1688

New York, Western NB of the United States, E4567
A really good note that has a lot going for it. It is a Second Charter forbidden title note with "United States" in the title (and not a small size Oregon note at that). It has an ascending ladder charter #4567. Finally, it is a broadly margined and well centered piece with no problems mentioned. This is the third title on the bank which was in force in 1903. A short-lived and very scarce bank. We just saw a PMG VF 30 example sell for over $2,000 in September.

This is an extraordinary #1 $5 Brown Back from Pennsylvania. It was the top note from the first sheet printed by the bank, and the bottom note is known as well.
