THREE NOTES; lower values of Robert Owen's labor notes, all remainders in a high degree of preservation. Branches existed in South London and Birmingham. These pieces are all from Birmingham; imprint Vizetelly, Branston, & Co. Owen was an early socialist and philanthropist who tried to help workers by providing a way of paying them in terms of hours worked to produce goods. He would pay them in notes denominated in hours, which in turn could be spent to purchase items in his Exchange. At first it worked but eventually failed when arguments over time spent in production ensued. Also, the Exchange became overstocked with items that did not sell.
