NL 1; 5; 50 Francs 20.5.1940; ND (1940)
THREE NOTES; the 1 and 5 Francs from Herseaux, the 50 Francs from Limbourg group. All uniface. A number of Belgian communities found themselves cut off from regular supplies of currency shortly after the outbreak of World War II. The 1 and 5 Francs with city stamping at upper center. Soldiers with gun at center on Limbourg issue. This piece is seldom seen and was not known to catalogers when IBNS published a book on the series many years ago. Excellent collector group in very attractive grades.
Grade: Abt. AU; VF+; VF/EF    Bank Name: Commune de Herseaux; Limbourg-Meuse Eisden
Lot #2696 - World Paper Money > Belgium - ($ 60.00 - $ 125.00)
NL 5; 20 Frank 22.5.1940
TWO NOTES. Another very scarce World War II issue. Both with shield at upper left. Text on back with stamped signature of mayor (Burgemeester in Flemish). Unofficial handwritten numerals at lower center right border coming through to back, also thin tape spot at left margin on 5 Frank. The 20 Frank shows only light handling and has low serial number #376. Both are pleasing and difficult pieces.
Grade: Fine; VF    Bank Name: Gemeente Ingelmunster
Lot #2697 - World Paper Money > Belgium - ($ 90.00 - $ 175.00)
NL 1; 2; 5 Francs 3.6.1940
THREE NOTES. Pipaix is a small commune in Hainaut Province, Belgium. The quick advance by German forces in 1940 caught the area without enough currency; the result was a flurry of emergency local issues that did not last long. The 1 Franc is 68 x 43 mm; 2 Francs, 69 x 46 mm; 5 Francs, 88 x 68 mm. All with local stamping at left; only the 5 Francs has a hand signature. The IBNS book published in 1975 did not include this issue. All in a high state of preservation. A lovely trio!
Grade: UNC    Bank Name: Commune de Pipaix
Lot #2698 - World Paper Money > Belgium - ($ 75.00 - $ 150.00)
NL 5; 20 Francs 25.5.1940
TWO NOTES. Sinaai-Waas is a community in East Flanders. Both notes are in high grade with low serial numbers and most attractive, with local shield at upper left and lion with flag in underprinting on back. The 5 Francs has a couple very small spots and the 20 Francs shows minor handling at upper left, both on back. Faces are virtually perfect. Among the scarcer issues.
Grade: Avg. AU/UNC    Bank Name: Gemeente Sinaai-Waas
Lot #2699 - World Paper Money > Belgium - ($ 50.00 - $ 100.00)
NL 1; 5 Francs 15.5.1940
TWO NOTES. Both payable after the war as stated. Belgium was overrun during World War II; right from the start, an emergency situation arose that called for local currency to be used in a number of areas. The 1 Franc is a lovely UNC. The 5 Francs has seen considerable use and has a tear at upper and lower center; it also has three hand signatures. All such notes are now scarce.
Grade: UNC; VG/Fine    Bank Name: Ville de Spa
Lot #2700 - World Paper Money > Belgium - ($ 75.00 - $ 150.00)
NL 100 Francs 15.5.1940

Lot #2701 - World Paper Money > Belgium - ($ 75.00 - $ 150.00)
NL 2 Francs; 1 Frank 15.5.1940; 1.6.1940
TWO NOTES. The Verviers 2 Francs, 135 x 93 mm, was reported in the IBNS book but no example could be found for illustration or proper description. Local shield at upper center; three printed signatures. This example with a thin on back from mounting and slight edge roughness at top center; overall lovely grade. The Vilvoorde 1 Frank is the plate note for the IBNS book. Fortified castle on back. For accuracy, very slight soiling on back. Both pieces desirable.
Grade: EF; VF    Bank Name: Ville de Verviers; Stad Vilvoorde
Lot #2702 - World Paper Money > Belgium - ($ 75.00 - $ 150.00)
NL 50; 100 Francs 15.5.1940
TWO NOTES; both remainders without serial numbers in wonderful grade. The 50 Francs is full UNC; the 100 Francs just about the same. Notes like these represent a terrible period of European history.
Grade: UNC; AU/UNC    Bank Name: Ville de Verviers
Lot #2703 - World Paper Money > Belgium - ($ 75.00 - $ 150.00)
NL 5; 20 Frank 17.10.1942; 11.6.1940
TWO NOTES. Each with its own authorization body. The 5 Frank was good for food to members of a group. Its issue date is significant. Comission stamping at left, stamped date at lower center; uniface. Small spindle hole center; low serial number #501. Town issue 20 Frank has official stamping at upper left. Several small spots at lower center, otherwise truly lovely. Text and stamped signature of mayor on back. Low serial number #689. Good collector pair.
Grade: Avg. EF    Bank Name: Commissie van Openbaren Onderstand; Gemeente Meulebeke
Lot #2704 - World Paper Money > Belgium - ($ 100.00 - $ 200.00)
NL 5; 20; 50 Frank 22.5.1940
THREE NOTES; all uniface remainders with serial numbers. Only the 50 Frank shows very minor signs of handling at upper left corner. IBNS book information indicates these notes were made to help 500 families whose men were mobilized into the army. They were valid for only a few weeks. Total printed was only 36,000 Frank; issued in book form which accounts for left sides being perforated. Unknown how many were actually used.
