2016 PCDA Auction > Session 2, Nov. 18 @ 6 PM - US - 2016 PCDA Floor Auction

Lot #1000 - Colonial Currency > Delaware - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
DE-68 15 Shillings June 1, 1759
Printed by Ben Franklin. All notes printed by Mr. Franklin are avidly collected due to their deep, historical ties to our country's 18th century history. PCGS mentions a repaired center split, pinholes, and minor edge fraying.
Grade: PCGS Apparent Fine 15
Lot #1001 - Colonial Currency > Delaware - ($ 350.00 - $ 550.00)
DE-92 20 Shillings May 1, 1777
A much better 1777 Delaware note and one blessed with ample margins and good signatures.
Grade: PCGS Abt. New 53
Lot #1002 - Colonial Currency > New Hampshire - ($ 300.00 - $ 600.00)
NH-179 $1 April 29, 1780
The 1780 New Hampshire note is always coveted by even the most novice Colonial collectors because it's the only readily available offering for a 13 Colony type set.
Grade: PCGS XF 45
Lot #1003 - Colonial Currency > New Jersey - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
NJ-152 1 Shilling December 31, 1763
This 1763 New Jersey note has just about the widest margins that are possible so we are not sure where a grade of only Ch. CU comes into play. One has to actually have knowledge of the sheet structure to see how little room there is between notes on an uncut sheet.
Grade: PMG Ch. UNC 63
Lot #1004 - Colonial Currency > New Jersey - ($ 350.00 - $ 550.00)
NJ-155 6 Shillings December 31, 1763
Great signatures and crisp paper are seen on this better 1763 Colonial.
Grade: PMG Ch. UNC 63 EPQ
Lot #1005 - Colonial Currency > North Carolina - ($ 300.00 - $ 600.00)
NC-138 10 Shillings December, 1771
A decade ago a note such as this would have been a no-brainer Superb Gem since the paper quality is about as good as it gets and you cannot find margins larger than these. Now the services have decided to apply their own standards.
Grade: PMG Ch. UNC 63 EPQ
Lot #1006 - Colonial Currency > Pennsylvania - ($ 300.00 - $ 600.00)
PA-168 15 Shillings October 1, 1773
A colorful and fresh example of this columned Pennsylvania type.
Grade: PCGS Ch. New 63
Lot #1007 - Colonial Currency > Pennsylvania - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
PA-188 2 Shillings 6 Pence October 25, 1775
A note indicative of Boyd quality and falling just short of the Gem grade. Ex: John J. Ford, Jr. Collection.
Grade: PCGS Very Ch. New 64 PPQ
Lot #1008 - Colonial Currency > Pennsylvania - ($ 300.00 - $ 600.00)
PA-211 6 Pence April 10,1777
Excellent margins are seen on this small change Pennsylvania note.
Grade: PCGS Ch. New 63 PPQ
Lot #1009 - Colonial Currency > Pennsylvania - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
PA-224b 4 Pound April 10, 1777
Red and Black. A note that looks AU but which has some center fold split repairs cited by PMG. This is easily one of the prettiest we have seen with the margins so broad on all sides as to allow for the note's full border ornamentation to be clearly seen. An ex: Ford note that should bring a Ford price.
Grade: PMG Ch. XF 45 Net
Lot #1010 - Colonial Currency > Pennsylvania - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
PA-242 6 Pence April 20, 1781
Adjectives fail your cataloger in describing the ineffable beauty wielded by this small change note. The technical grade of '58' is correct but the eye appeal grade is that of a '68'. You will rarely ever find another that looks like this unless you find a sheet to cut up.
Grade: PCGS Ch. Abt. New 58 PPQ
Lot #1011 - Continental Currency - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
CC-96 $45 January 14, 1779
High-grade Continentals have seen renewed vigor in the marketplace. This is a very well-signed piece that should see lots of bidding.
Grade: PMG Abt. UNC 53
Lot #1012 - Confederate Notes - ($ 2,500.00 - $ 5,000.00)
T-11 $5 July 25, 1861
A Hoyer and Ludwig product of which fewer than 75,000 were printed. It remains a very scarce note and is commonly found in Fine and VF grades, almost always with problems. With repaired splits this note is no exception. Fully framed and always selling for a couple to a few thousand when appearing at auction.
Grade: PCGS Apparent Fine 15
Lot #1013 - Confederate Items - ($ 600.00 - $ 800.00)
T-17 $20 September 2, 1861
Great color and the cancels seem nearly invisible. PCGS notes: cross-cut cancelled, backed.
Grade: PCGS VF 20 Apparent
Lot #1014 - Confederate Notes - ($ 750.00 - $ 1,500.00)
T-21 $20 September 2, 1861
A wholesome example of this better T-21 variety that has retained vivacious inks and snappy paper surfaces.
Grade: PCGS VF 20
Lot #1015 - Confederate Notes - ($ 1,250.00 - $ 2,500.00)
T-23 $10 September 2, 1861
We have seen very few of these cross the auction block, with the only other comparable piece another Apparent Fine note, with lots of problems, selling for around $1,000 a couple of years ago. This note is cross-cut cancelled and does have some pieces replaced and tape repairs. Low serial #41 should be an added bonus. Nonetheless, it is listed as R-12 + in Fricke and does appear to really be that scarce.
Grade: PCGS Apparent Fine 15
Lot #1016 - Confederate Notes - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
T-28 $10 September 2, 1861
A fully framed example of a notoriously tightly margined type. It even has the printer's name in the broad right margin. Cut-cancelled but certainly one of the prettiest we have seen. A type that is scarce in AU grade and rare in CU grades.
Grade: PMG Abt. UNC 53 EPQ
Lot #1017 - Confederate Notes - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
T-29 $10 September 2, 1861
PF-1, Cr. 237. Cross-Cut Cancel. A very well margined T-29 note that is a much better item once you get to the VF grade level. PCGS mentions minor stains and small repair.
Grade: PCGS Apparent VF 25
Lot #1018 - Confederate Notes - ($ 1,000.00 - $ 1,500.00)
T-31 $5 September 2, 1861
Scarcer plate C. This is the same plate as T-15 and T-19 notes. About 90% full frame line is seen on this better T-31 Confederate note. The "5" and "FIVE" overprint remains strong with generally good print quality seen throughout.
Grade: PCGS VF 20
Lot #1019 - Confederate Notes - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
T-32 $5 September 2, 1861
A much better Confederate type and one that becomes a lot scarcer at the VF grade level. Uncancelled but with small edge splits, and minor edge damage and stains noted.
Grade: PCGS Apparent Fine 15
Lot #1020 - Confederate Notes - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
T-43 $2 June 2, 1862 Fully Framed
A robust green "TWO" overprint remains on this better Confederate Deuce. It is fully framed which is a quality few T-43 notes can claim.
Grade: PCGS VF 20
Lot #1021 - Confederate Notes - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
T-45 $1 June 2, 1862
A trio of enormous margins are offset by a tight top margin. A much better type with the bold green "ONE" overprint. This is one of the prettiest we have sold in a while and it's totally original.
Grade: PCGS VF 30 PPQ
Lot #1022 - Confederate Items - ($ 250.00 - $ 500.00)
T-45 $1 June 2, 1862
Great paper and color but uneven cut.
Grade: VF
Lot #1023 - Confederate Notes - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
T-51 $20 December 2, 1862
Snow white paper surfaces and vivid inks validate the Premium Paper Quality designation. This note is about 90% fully framed which is really quite a rare feat for notes of this type. AU notes are very scarce and CU notes an outright rarity. Typical AUs tend to sell for many hundreds.
Grade: PCGS Ch. Abt. New 55 PPQ
Lot #1024 - Confederate Items - ($ 1,500.00 - $ 3,000.00)
T-64 $500 February 17, 1864
High serial #37339. Dark pink, bold and beautiful. This is what everyone wants but seldom finds. PMG notes: great color.
Grade: PMG Ch. UNC 64 EPQ *
Lot #1025 - Confederate Notes - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
T-64 $500 February 17, 1864
A handsome Stonewall Jackson note that has excellent margins and bold signatures. We cannot really find the pinholes and the note pretty much looks CU but for some trace edge handling.
Grade: PMG Abt. UNC 55
Lot #1026 - Obsolete Notes & Miscellaneous Items > Alabama - ($ 800.00 - $ 1,200.00)
Eufaula Young, Woods & Gardner 25˘
Rosene 73-4. Civil War date of April 15, 1862. Easily one of the top couple of examples in the condition census for this private partnership. Signed by all three members at lower right and with bright red "25" seen at top right. A problem-free VF is exceptional grade for a series whose notes tend to be VG/Fine with problems.
Grade: PCGS VF 20
Lot #1027 - Obsolete Notes & Miscellaneous Items > Alabama - ($ 750.00 - $ 1,500.00)
Marion Selma, Marion & Memphis Railroad Co. $2
Rosene 178-2. March 1, 1871. This denomination is quite a bit more challenging to obtain than are the fractional denominations of this railroad company issuer. Engraved signature of former Confederate general, Nathan Bedford Forrest, is seen at lower right. Pleasing vignettes and vibrant inks make this a sought after piece.
Grade: PCGS Ch. New 63
Lot #1028 - Obsolete Notes & Miscellaneous Items > Alabama - ($ 1,250.00 - $ 2,500.00)
Selma Real Estate Banking House 25˘
Rosene 301-1. Simply a rare Alabama municipal issue from the Town Council of Selma. It faces up quite well with good detail and bold signatures. The right end has been repaired and reconstructed as noted by PMG. Low serial #12 makes this piece all the more alluring. In 2001 Dr. Jones sold a 50˘ note for over $600 in low grade and with problems. Fifteen years later this example should easily double that figure.
Grade: PMG Fine 12 Net
Lot #1029 - Obsolete Notes & Miscellaneous Items > District of Columbia - ($ 750.00 - $ 1,500.00)
Washington Chemical Bank $10
Haxby 175-G18. July 14, 1853. A very well printed note with boldly-accomplished signatures, to the degree that there is a small ink erosion repair. Full frame line and deep printing accentuate the positives on this Ormsby product. We tend to see lower denomination notes on this bank with this beauty just about the highest-graded example we can find.
Grade: PCGS Apparent XF 45
Lot #1030 - Obsolete Notes & Miscellaneous Items > Florida - ($ 600.00 - $ 1,200.00)
Newberry Bank of Newberry $5
Remainder. A lovely piece of 1933 Depression scrip that is hands down the nicest we have seen.
Grade: PMG Gem UNC 66 EPQ
Lot #1031 - Obsolete Notes & Miscellaneous Items > Georgia - ($ 300.00 - $ 500.00)
Columbus Dillard, Powell & Co. $5
August 1, 1862. Scarce and seldom offered.
Grade: VG
Lot #1032 - Obsolete Notes & Miscellaneous Items > Indiana - ($ 300.00 - $ 600.00)
La Porte La Porte & Plymouth Plank Road Co. $1
WVS 386-1. June 3, 1857. Certainly an available note but rarely in this pristine state of preservation.
Grade: PCGS Superb Gem New 67 PPQ
Lot #1033 - Obsolete Notes & Miscellaneous Items > Louisiana - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
Parish of St. John the Baptist $1
A very pretty note with bold green "ONE" protector directly beneath vignette of Ceres. General P.G.T. Beauregard seen at left. Always popular by virtue of being a Louisiana parish note but also due to the evocative nomenclature of the forerunner.
Grade: PCGS VF 25
Lot #1034 - Obsolete Notes & Miscellaneous Items > Maryland - ($ 300.00 - $ 600.00)
Baltimore Western Bank $5
January 1, 1839. This note has a center vignette of a bank building that became a national bank.
Grade: VF/XF
Lot #1035 - Obsolete Notes & Miscellaneous Items > Massachusetts - ($ 1,500.00 - $ 2,000.00)
Boston Merchants Bank $5
This beauty is fully tinted and with a bank building vignette.
Grade: VF +
Lot #1036 - Obsolete Notes & Miscellaneous Items > Massachusetts - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
Lawrence Bay State Bank $20
A black and white proof on the Bay State Bank with an impressive vignette. Not perfect but cool.
Grade: CU
Lot #1037 - Obsolete Notes & Miscellaneous Items > Massachusetts - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
Lynn Mechanics' Bank $1 Proof
Lynn Lynn Mechanics' Bank $1 Proof
Haxby 785-260. The obligation notes "Payable to the Cashier of the Phoenix Bank at Hartford, Con. Pay to John Brooks." A rare early proof, dated 1816, and the only one we can recall having seen. PMG notes: repaired, but any repairs are trivial at best.
Grade: PMG Abt. UNC 53 Net
Lot #1038 - Obsolete Notes & Miscellaneous Items > Mississippi - ($ 600.00 - $ 1,200.00)
Jackson State of Mississippi $50
Criswell 2Ac. A well margined example of this better high denomination note. The paper is toned but otherwise this is a lightly circulated example. Dated September 10, 1862 with a payable date of June 1, 1864. The Newman note graded AU and sold for over $1,000.
Grade: XF
Lot #1039 - Obsolete Notes & Miscellaneous Items > New Jersey - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
Camden Farmers & Mechanics Bank $10 Proof
Haxby G10a. A superior quality of proof that is a screaming Gem except for a meaningless piece of tape that is covering up nothing. Red "TEN" protector is seen beneath the central vignette. In May 1864 this bank became the First National Bank of Camden, charter number 431.
Grade: UNC
Lot #1040 - Obsolete Notes & Miscellaneous Items > New Jersey - ($ 750.00 - $ 1,500.00)
Camden Farmers & Mechanics Bank $50 Proof
Haxby 60-UNL. HPC. A really scarce $50 black-and-white proof and the only one that we can recall having seen. It is beautiful from every angle and really scarce. Most of the proofs that we see on Camden are $10 and lower denominations.
Grade: PCGS Gem New 66 PPQ
Lot #1041 - Obsolete Notes & Miscellaneous Items > New Jersey - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
Cape May Court House American Exchange Bank $1 Proof
Haxby 85-G2. HPC. A superb example that looks a bit better than just Ch. New. A really bright proof with such depth of printing as to almost produce a cameo effect. Dated Jan. 1, 1852. Black-and-white proof without red protector. One of the most charming beach towns that the East Coast has to offer.
Grade: PCGS Ch. New 63
Lot #1042 - Obsolete Notes & Miscellaneous Items > New Jersey - ($ 600.00 - $ 1,200.00)
Cape May Court House American Exchange Bank $2 Proof
Haxby 85-G4. Jan. 1, 1852. A gorgeous $2 Proof on this always popular south Jersey location. Easily a gem if there was just a hair more right margin. Last year a gem sold for over $700.
Grade: Very Ch. CU
Lot #1043 - Obsolete Notes & Miscellaneous Items > New Jersey - ($ 700.00 - $ 1,000.00)
Freehold Banking Co. $20 Proof
Haxby 155-UNL. HPC. This is the red-tinted variety that we see more often but a vast majority of those are $10 and lower denominations. Very few $20 proofs of this type appear and rarely, if ever, at this grade level.
Grade: PCGS Gem New 66 PPQ
Lot #1044 - Obsolete Notes & Miscellaneous Items > New Jersey - ($ 600.00 - $ 1,200.00)
Freehold Banking Co. $50 Proof
Haxby 155-G14. HPC. A much scarcer high denomination proof. Most of the ones that we see on this bank are of the same design but with dark tinted paper. Also more challenging as a black-and-white proof without protector at center. Bright and with broad margins, this Monmouth County proof has the visual impact of a note graded several points higher.
Grade: PCGS New 61
Lot #1045 - Obsolete Notes & Miscellaneous Items > New York - ($ 1,250.00 - $ 2,500.00)
Brooklyn Nassau Hotel 10˘
Harris 53. A great hotel note and one that should be hotly contested based on its desirable Brooklyn location. PCGS notes some minor stains for this hotel that was located at the corner of Nassau and Hudson Streets. The only other ones we have seen was a two piece lot which sold for $1,500 back in 2003. Both of those notes graded VF and this piece is vastly superior.
Grade: PCGS Apparent Abt. New 58
Lot #1046 - Obsolete Notes & Miscellaneous Items > New York - ($ 750.00 - $ 1,500.00)
Brooklyn South Brooklyn Building Association $2 Proof
Haxby UNL. HPC. A very scarce proof that is actually a bearer instrument meant to circulate as money. Disguised as a stock certificate so as to not necessitate gaining a bank charter. PCGS notes: small stains and mounting remnants. This same note sold for $747.50 back in 2010.
Grade: PCGS Apparent Abt. New 53
Lot #1047 - Obsolete Notes & Miscellaneous Items > New York - ($ 300.00 - $ 600.00)
Cobleskill Alex B. Larkin 10˘
Harris UNL. A very scarce piece of Civil War era scrip from New York. Signed by A.B. Larkin with a vanity signature and unlisted in Harris.
Grade: PCGS Abt. New 50 PPQ
Lot #1048 - Obsolete Notes & Miscellaneous Items > New York - ($ 600.00 - $ 1,200.00)
New York Phenix Bank $20 Proof
Haxby 1880-G114. HPC. A couple of hinge remnants seen on the back but are overshadowed by the truly cavernous embossing. An astounding and highly desirable 1830s-era proof that displays the phoenix rising from the flames and some of the most intricate scrollwork imaginable. Most of the proofs that we encounter on this bank are early Reed proofs and just about all of them are low denomination proofs.
Grade: PCGS Apparent Abt. New 55
Lot #1049 - Obsolete Notes & Miscellaneous Items > New York - ($ 750.00 - $ 1,250.00)
New York Tradesmen's Bank $2 Proof
NY-1940-G4. But for some margin tightness, this is an exemplary New York proof from a rare issue. Auction records show that a $1 and $3 have sold in the past year, both realized around $750 in AU grade.
Grade: UNC
Lot #1050 - Obsolete Notes & Miscellaneous Items > New York - ($ 1,000.00 - $ 1,500.00)
Setauket The Setauket Bank $5 Altered Issue
Haxby 2565-A10. Any genuine Long Island Obsolete is really scarce and even fewer end up in public auction. Setauket is found on the North Shore of Long Island and is part of the Three Villages. The only other example we have seen was a genuine $1 in the Newman collection. That PCGS Apparent Very Fine 20, with stains, splits, tears and tape repair, sold for $2,000 several months ago. While this note is an altered issue note it isn't really any less scarce and not all that less desirable.
Grade: PCGS Apparent Fine 15
Lot #1051 - Obsolete Notes & Miscellaneous Items > New York - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
Utica W.P. Carpenter 25c
Harris 132. October 6, 1862. Mr. Carpenter, whose facsimile signature is seen at lower right, was the city treasurer as well as a bookkeeper for J.S. & M. Peckham. Portrait of Lincoln seen at left. Nicer than the Harris plate note which sold for $632.50 many years ago.
Grade: PCGS Ch. Abt. New 58
Lot #1052 - Obsolete Notes & Miscellaneous Items > Ohio - ($ 1,500.00 - $ 2,500.00)
Delaware State Bank of Ohio, Delaware County Branch $20
Haxby 5-G660. Wolka 1027-38. A bank which opened in 1845 and then became the Delaware County National Bank, charter #853 on January 10, 1865. This piece is easily one of the finest known of this type. When it first sold in Wendell's collection back in 2014 it realized a hair under $2,000. One of three known and not about to become any more common or less desirable.
Grade: PCGS VF 20
Lot #1053 - Obsolete Notes & Miscellaneous Items > Oklahoma - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
Eufaula Indian Territory C.H. Tully $5
Burgett 6. This is the later 1898 issue and printed in all brown inks. Not as sharp as the earlier 1894 series. Rare in this issued state as it bears both signature and serial number. The only one we have encountered. Any Indian Territory obsolete is a worthy piece for any collection.

PCGS notes minor stains and missing corner tips. The only other one we have seen was the Newman example; that PCGS 15PPQ sold for $1,527.50 last year.

Haxby 485-G158. A lovely black-and-white proof that bears a series of allegorical maidens in each vignette. As bright as the day it was printed with the visual impact of a Choice New piece. Apparently not in the ABNCo archives since there is no stamp on the back. This is the only $10 proof we have seen for this bank and is not to be confused with the plethora of Commonwealth Bank proofs floating around.

Rust 74. January 20, 1849. These are far more highly coveted with the signature of B. Young than are the unsigned remainders. Backed 80% by gold dust and bearing the impressed seal of the Twelve Apostles. Ch. Haxby 195-G4a. A short-lived bank that opened in 1860 but which went up in flames after the burning of Richmond in 1865. Central vignette of a man with horses, with lower right vignette of a boy with birds nest and lower left portrait of Washington. A series for which notes of $5 and lower denominations available but not so for the $10 note. A bright and lightly handled AU that is sure to please.
Grade: PCGS Abt. New 53
Lot #1068 - Obsolete Notes & Miscellaneous Items > Virginia - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
Richmond Virginia Treasury Note $50

Black River Falls D.J. Spaulding $1
Undated. Signed by D.J. Spaulding at lower right. A merchant store note good for one dollar. There is a cut cancel that has been closed on the back with a piece of tape. Enormously margined and the only one of its kind that we have come across.

Lot #1070 - Obsolete Notes & Miscellaneous Items > Wisconsin - ($ 750.00 - $ 1,500.00)
Green Bay Fox River Bank $5 Specimen

Lot #1071 - Obsolete Notes & Miscellaneous Items > Wisconsin - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
Green Bay Green Bay Mining Co. of Negaunee $2
Krause 246-SC8. A rare and challenging scrip note to be used in Michigan's Upper Peninsula mines. The small edge tears and minor edge damage have little if any effect on the desirability of this piece.
Grade: PCGS Apparent VF 20
Lot #1072 - Obsolete Notes & Miscellaneous Items > Wisconsin - ($ 1,250.00 - $ 2,500.00)
La Crosse Katanyan Bank $5 Proof
Haxby 330-G6. A handsome black-and-white proof that is printed on India paper and which bears lots of appealing vignettes. The margins and centering appear to make this note qualify for a better grade and we are not sure why the PPQ designation wasn't applied. This proof was missing from Chet's collection and the Newman note, which graded PCGS 58 PPQ, realized $940 a year ago.
Grade: PCGS Very Ch. New 64
Lot #1073 - Obsolete Notes & Miscellaneous Items > Wisconsin - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
Whitewater Kokomo Bank $3 Spurious
Haxby 250-S15. A very desirable type that is quite difficult to find as a problem free note and with good grade. This spurious note was a product of the Cincinnati Bank Note Co. and they were not of the most wholesome reputation.

Fr. 191a $20 August 15, 1864
As the effects of the war between the states raged on more capital was needed. This really is an excellent example of a $20 Compound Interest Note. The paper quality is excellent and the paper has suffered little from the heavy gold surcharge that was added to make it look different and more important. This note is not perfectly problem free but it is a very nice example of this type. Great paper and excellent surcharge, just a wonderful note. There are only 57 reported serial numbers and of those graded 75-80% have negative comments. This example has minor issues. PCGS notes: small edge splits, minor restoration.

This note is amazing for its originality and a center bend that defies easy detection. The centering is lovely but the originality will make this note desirable to many. There are only 28 in the census as AU 55 or AU 58. The census shows 28 serial numbers with only four others with EPQ or PPQ.
Grade: PCGS Ch. Abt. New 55 PPQ

Lot #1187 - Military Payment Certificates - ($ 3,000.00 - $ 6,000.00)
Series 461 25˘ 9/16/46 - 3/10/47 Replacement
Top Pop at both grading services by leaps and bounds. A light off-center vertical fold is all that keeps this piece from grading immortality. It is fresh and bright with embossing easily discernible through the holder. The only other piece that is even close in grade was sold roughly a decade ago. First raw at $3,220 and then again in a PCGS Apparent XF 40 holder. The Green Sheet for this note is $2,900 in AU and we strongly suspect that is a conservative outlook.
Grade: PCGS Ch. Abt. New 58 PPQ
Lot #1188 - Military Payment Certificates - ($ 4,000.00 - $ 8,000.00)
Series 461 50˘ 9/16/46 - 3/10/47 Replacement
This sensational piece is Top Pop at both services combined and is, in fact, the only uncirculated example that has been graded. It is as pristine as the day it was printed. The only one we have sold recently was a PMG VF 20 Net, with staining, that realized a solid four-figure price in the past couple of years. The Green Sheet does not list any price above VF and auction records are rare above that grade level as well. A great note that could easily make a run at a five-figure price.
Grade: PCGS Gem New 66 PPQ
Lot #1189 - Military Payment Certificates - ($ 500.00 - $ 750.00)

Lot #1190 - Military Payment Certificates - ($ 5,000.00 - $ 10,000.00)
Series 471 10˘ 3/10/47 - 3/22/48 Replacement
Another replacement that is Top Pop at both services combined with a little over a dozen known in all grades. Series 471 notes are always popular with collectors on account of their array of vivid ink colors. There is only a single other uncirculated example that we have seen at auction. That note sold a year ago in a PMG 64 (No EPQ) holder for a hair under $5,000. Emblematic of both the aesthetic beauty and originality that collectors crave, a multi-thousand dollar note which will make a triumphant entrance into one lucky collection.
Grade: PCGS Very Ch. New 64 PPQ
Lot #1191 - Military Payment Certificates - ($ 1,750.00 - $ 3,250.00)
Series 471 $5 3/10/47 - 3/22/48
An excellent MPC and one of the keys to the entire series. But for some trace handling at the corners this piece appears to be uncirculated, although the upper left corner has been reconstructed. A vivid array of red and blue inks has always made these notes much prettier by comparison to the early Series 461 and 472 notes. CU notes are an outright rarity and even AU notes really tough, as evidenced by the Green Sheet listing of $2,400 in AU 50.
Grade: PMG Abt. UNC 50 Net
Lot #1192 - Military Payment Certificates - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)

Lot #1196 - Military Payment Certificates - ($ 5,000.00 - $ 10,000.00)
Series 521 50˘ 5/25/54 - 5/27/58 Replacement
Top Pop at both services and the only uncirculated note graded. You can use your hands to count the number of 50˘ replacements that are known for this series. This is also the only known Second Printing replacement for this series and denomination. The Flynn example graded PCGS AU 58 (no PPQ) and closed in on the $3,000 mark almost a decade ago. With the combination of rarity, originality and grade wielded by this great MPC, our estimate should prove laughable once the hammer falls.

An absolutely luscious example of this $1 MPC from the final Vietnam issue. PMG has only graded two '68s' ahead of this one. One of those sold for over $2,000 a year ago. At only a single point below, and it looks awfully good for a '67', we expect a strong realization.

Fr. 1500 $1 A00001110A
Typical Gem 1928 $1 Legals sell in the neighborhood of $500. This is a special note that should warm the cockles of the hearts of all fancy serial number collectors. With serial #A00001110A it falls into multiple pockets of demand. It is a low four-digit serial number. On top of that it is a true binary serial number note with only zeroes and ones. The $20 Richmond star is really a tough animal and never one that is available with any sort of grade. PMG has graded a single XF but aside from that one note this VF 25 would be tied for Top Pop at both services. Schwartz/Lindquist lists this at $600 in VF but that is way too low.

Fr. 2116-E $50 1969-B Richmond E-A
The 1969-B $50 notes are from one of the iconic series of modern FRNs from 1963-present. This superior near Gem piece is utterly flawless except for the right margin being a little smaller than the others. A series from which Gem notes are a condition rarity.

Dark green seal. Rolling, natural paper wave and a plethora of embossing validate the originality of this well-centered piece. In the depths of the 2009 bear market the note four serial numbers before this one sold for $1,150.

Not rare by any stretch of the imagination but certainly scarcer than the dark seal notes. Early light green seal Feds are seeing increasingly stronger prices and this one looks Ch. CU through the holder.

Fr. 2151-J $100 1928-A Kansas City J-A
With a printing under 700,000 this Kansas City note is a real challenge to locate, particularly in Gem grade. PCGS has only graded a single note better than this one and by only one point. Bright and with natural paper wave clearly visible. The couple of 66 PQ notes we have seen in recent years seem to land around the $2,000 mark.

Very few of these 1934 light green seal $100s achieve a Gem grade. This note is certainly pretty enough and it has a lot going for it. Chances are pretty good that the winning bidder will think so too.

Fr. 1300 25˘ Third Issue
The census on this much scarcer fiber paper Fractional stands somewhere in the teens. Virtually all of these have some type of damage as they were brittle and cracked very easily. There are some small internal and edge splits and tape repairs. Nonetheless a very appealing note that is much scarcer than the Fr. 1299 with no position indicator. In our summer sale, we just sold a PCGS Apparent XF 45 for over $2,000.

Sacramento Gold Bank of D.O. Mills & Co. Duplicate of Exchange
March 24, 1874. $100 Duplicate of Exchange. Although obviously not an actual banknote, this item is so inextricably linked to our National Banking history that it seems appropriate for it to appear here. Redeemable in gold coin and printed by the American Bank Note Co. So far as we know a rare type and either way it is a really neat item.

San Jose, Farmers Gold NB, 2158
Many of these National Gold Bank Notes are found in VG or less grade, with scant few making it to VF. Almost all have problems, as does this note with small edge splits, tears, minor damage. The note itself is really quite bright and well detailed, with the problems primarily confined to the edges. A far less common National Gold Bank Note than the First National of San Francisco. The array of coinage in the back central vignette has always made this all the more desirable. We have recently seen far lesser quality pieces hitting the $3,000 mark.

Milford, First NB, E2340
A very scarce note that is the only $20 Brown Back on this Kent County institution. One of only three $20 Brown Backs in this county and remarkably one of only a dozen for the entire state. The sale of virtually any of the $20 Brown Backs on this state results in a multi-thousand dollar event. A trio of hulking margins, vibrant ink colors and only a modicum of light folds lend to the aesthetic appeal of this Second Charter note. A real treasure that will await a triumphant entry into someone's collection.

Certainly not a scarce note as there are about 20 small size $100s listed in the census. This particular note happens to be one of the couple nicest examples and it looks even better than XF but the lower corner has been repaired. Topeka, First NB, W2646
It's been a decade since I last offered this $100 from the state capital of Kansas. Back then it realized a shade under $19,000. The $100 Brown Backs have become more popular and more elusive with the passage of time. The paper on this note is excellent and the signatures are light and wispy but clear. There are ten $100 Brown Backs from the state and no others from the capital. This was likely the last one offered.

Baltimore, Old Town NB, E5984
A Baltimore City bank that is certainly available enough as a type but with only a half dozen $10 Value Backs known. Evenly circulated and with good color. We sold this same note in our June 2001 sale for $435 and the market is certainly on more solid footing than it was at that time.

Kitzmillerville,, First NB, 8302
A very scarce note with only nine known in large size. A bank that did not last too long as there are only Third Charter large and Type 1 small notes. Located up in western Maryland in Garrett County. We sold a $5 note, grading Fine, for $2,420 back in 1999. We would not be surprised to see a similar result this evening when one considers the $10 note is much scarcer and the 1999 market was far weaker.

This is one of the nicest notes I have seen from this charter. It has excellent stamped signatures although they were stamped low. McGill, NB, 9452
McGill has always been a rare location from this state with only 16 national banks. There are 17 small notes reported from this White Pine County bank. Most of the notes were part of one of the two uncut sheets. The $20s were cut around 1970; the $10 sheet may still be intact. The only auction records I could find were for three circ, non-sheet notes but the census by Track & Price shows 11.

As far as I can tell this note is the best of the Blue Seals. The signatures are bold and printed in black. The paper and body are excellent minus a couple of minor splits.

Fr. 437 $20 1875
Bismarck, First NB, 2434
First charter notes from North Dakota are particularly rare and desirable, with this being the only $20 First Charter recorded. This is one of only two known $20 First Charters from the state; the other is somewhat nicer and from Fargo. The signatures are completely different from those on the $10 (Asa Fisher, President and W.A. Dillon, Cashier). In 1883, Bismarck became the capital of the Dakota Territory (when it moved from Yankton) and, in 1889, capital of the state of North Dakota.

Grand Forks, First NB, W2570
A gorgeous $100 Brown Back from the great state of North Dakota. This note recently appeared from out of the blue and there are now two known for the state. They are PQ or close which is a rumor of the third. Regardless the quality of this note is amazing with excellent pen signatures of J. Walker Smith, President and Seymour Start Titus, Cashier. The bottom left edge has had a tiny restoration but not even the great North Dakota collector, Glen Jorde, had the opportunity to acquire such a great state rarity, and obviously the state's highest denomination.
Grade: XF +    Bank Name: Grand Forks, First NB, W2570

Excellent pen signatures of the vice president and cashier.

Bearing a popular "Forbidden Title" due to United States listed in the bank title. A scarce note to begin with, there are about 20 known. A cool note from this Bradford County bank. First, because it's a Grange bank and second, it's a Red Seal. There are a couple of hard to see restorations. There were only 11 large notes reported and 3 of the 4 #1 Red Seals have been reported. This is the 'A' note and was signed by E. Everett Van Dyne, President. The cashier's signature has faded away. PCGS notes: restorations in upper left and right corners.

A great note that is one of only three Second Charter Date Backs on this elusive bank. It is also the only $20 Date Back on the bank as the other two are $5 notes. For the entire state of Utah there are only 20 Date Backs from all banks. PMG notes: a tear repair and trimming.
